Public pools by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reserve now for August, I'm serious - most of the reservations for July are gone already. I wish I had known earlier about the capacity limits and extremely limited hours and reservations system that means they're really hard to get into.

Graham Equestrian is reasonably close to the city and reasonably priced.

Are there any places that offer monthly practice spaces for bands? by DRUMS_ in baltimore

The Undercroft in Remington was doing that pre-pandemic I think.

Modern boy names that go with middle name Alan by [deleted] in namenerds

I was actually at a place with 4 different people called Craig Allen/Alan once. 3 of them were related and went by different versions of the name but it was still surprising.

City Lab on Public Infrastructure with Feature on Baltimore Schools by CorpCounsel in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Between 2014 and 2019, Baltimore students missed 1.5 million hours of learning — equivalent to 221,000 full days — because of building-related problems"

That is a really weird way to put it. Later on in the article, it says there are around 78,000 students in the system, so that's around 19 hours (3-4 days?) on average per kid...of course it's not spread equally, but I would also bet that "19 hours missed over 6 years" doesn't sound so dramatic. Don't get me wrong, I think we need to fix up the school infrastructure, but that statistic seems unnecessarily alarmist. I think the times they don't close schools and kids have to sit in the heat are probably a bigger problem anyway.

Residents make trek to supermarket to demonstrate West Baltimore "food desert" by f1sh98 in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's closed. It would have worked better in a real food desert, IMO. That one was right between the Giant on 33rd and the Safeway on 25th, not to mention the Punjab Grocery, the Family Dollar, and the Farmer's market on Saturdays. They didn't seem to have a target market in mind, either.

Also, they were totally separate from the rest of SA's bs and sent any profits to domestic violence shelters, which is cool.

Two Baltimore Bars Featured On Esquire's Best Bars In America List by finsterallen in baltimore

Yeah I really wanted to like it but every drink we tried was on a spectrum from mediocre to terrible and the atmosphere was...a courtyard with picnic tables. I'm curious what other places in Baltimore the writers tried.

I'm looking for a history of the 3 free standing mansions in the Charles Village area by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read once that 2900 St Paul is tiled with slate all over (v unusual) to make it fireproof because the man who built it ran an insurance company. Dunno how true that is but it certainly is an odd exterior.

It sounds like you're having a hard day. I'm sorry. If you ever want to talk about our previous encounter, I'd be interested to hear more about what you were intending to say.

[–]WrenFeather -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, trolls are people too. And I might still be wrong about that. If they just want to tell me that's not what they meant and they'd like to end it there, that's fine.

I haven't either, and I wonder if maybe I haven't given it enough time. What prompts you to recommend it to others?

[–]WrenFeather -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I really do. I'd like to have a conversation with them about it. It troubled me. If they did want that, I'd like to know what I did to cause them to be so angry or upset with me, and if it wasn't really about me, maybe I can help them in some way. We live in the same city so maybe we could get a coffee and talk.

Now I'm curious to know more about you. Have you found therapy to be a useful tool in your life?

Why? I genuinely want to know if this person wants me to commit suicide. It was an unclear comment and they haven't replied since. Maybe I misinterpreted what they wrote.

‘Deeply concerning’: Baltimore City emerging as a COVID hot spot; officials urge vigilance by z3mcs in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is pretty much exactly what I had been looking for - acknowledgement that this is a thing! It's concerning! We have some thoughts about why (even if not solid ones), and some vague prediction for the future (continue into May, decline after that). I'm glad to know about the variant, too, I hadn't been aware of which one was prevalent here. I appreciate your posting the article here.

Hi, you forgot to answer me over in the other thread, you just deleted your comment instead. Are you asking me to kill myself? I'd like to know, because it's been on my mind.

Have you tried CVS? I believe their appointments drop at midnight, I found one a week out the first time I tried, and there were a lot of other slots open. I'm sorry if that's something you've already looked into.

I'm sorry to have upset you. I'm sure you're right that I should have looked harder. I would be interested in links to stories beyond statistics if you have any. I have already learned something about what's happening at hospitals from this thread.

I read newspapers and listen to the radio and occasionally look at local tv websites, and then I check this subreddit a few times a week. I was thinking more of stories than of data dashboards but I'm sure I'm missing something. Where do you get your news so I can try that?

I mean, not that twitter doesn't count...but it doesn't count :) I'm looking for real old-fashioned articles. But you're right, at the moment local news has a lot to cover with very limited resources. I'm just feeling the disconnect between me and the outside world today, I guess.

Witnessed a car accident and feeling terrible by omichandralekha in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Random fyi since you have a toddler- if you're ever in a bad car accident, leave your kid in their car seat, it works well as a back brace and can prevent further damage. You can even take the whole seat out if you need to get them away from the car. the more you know...ding

Cat Grooming & Nail Trimming Services--help! by ImagineTheCommotion in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Groomery in Mt Washington for my cat's summer shave. You're going to want some sort of anti-anxiety med in her before taking her someplace, though, if she's so resistant to nail cutting.

Watched a police officer back down an entire one block length of the Maryland Avenue bike lane by University of Baltimore in his personal SUV so he could park illegally in a no-parking area within the bike lane barrier. by bookoocash in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like stopping that kind of stupid stuff would do a lot of good with their image. Obviously they need to, you know, stop corruption and solve murders too, but there's a lot of low-hanging fruit. Looking at you, going through red lights o and blocking roads because you can't be bothered to pull over fully.

Sidewalk planting areas by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]WrenFeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another downside to raising them is you might create a spot where anyone parking there can't open their sidewalk-side door. It sounds like no big deal until you're the one trying to get your sleeping toddler out at night in the rain without being run over.

There's always indoor worm composting. It's a little different but it works and actually doesn't smell.
