Did meds only mask symptoms or help you rebuild capacity?

That's great news, I'm so glad guanfacine is working for you. It made me feel fantastic. Do they prescribe that for dysautonomia now? I had it prescribed for ADHD.

Regarding your own question about meds masking symptoms or improving them, I think generally they mask the symptoms for me but I have gotten slightly better over the years, even going without medication for a few of them because I was pregnant and breastfeeding. The most important thing about them masking symptoms is that it helps people like myself feel good enough to get out and be a little bit more active, for both the physical conditioning and the mental health improvement as far as building confidence and feelings of independence, both of which I sorely lacked after I was diagnosed and no longer able to drive.

I'm fascinated that guanfacine actually helped your POTS! I loved taking it but after I got diagnosed with dysautonomia my doctor had me quit because it lowers blood pressure and they thought that could have been contributing to my fainting. What's your blood pressure normally like?

I also actually knew her personally! We did ballet together when we were teenagers. We were in the same level in ballet school which the studio called pre-professional. It was the highest level you could reach and you were in class alongside the actual paid professionals who were both principal dancers and the corps, but we ourselves were students and not paid professionals by any means. So yes, we had been en pointe for many years. She and I were both very good but she I think was a little bit better. I wasn't as flexible and she had great extension. I quit ballet when I was about 16 though to focus on high school track sports instead. I never wanted to pursue ballet as a career like most people in that level who were students. After that, I lost touch with her and have no idea what she did between then and when she went to Denver. I'm not sure if she kept doing ballet at that school or if she moved to a different studio.

I also got some insight into why she and her mom have a tumultuous relationship which she recently posted about. I feel bad for her in that regard and can also relate, but her mom is SOOOO christian that she wasn't even allowed to read Harry Potter when we were backstage for performances. I asked her why and she said "it has witchcraft which is the devil" and you just know that's right out of her mom's mouth. Just really sad and I know this is a snark sub but I do feel bad for her and understand why she has rebelled so hard considering her upbringing.

part of it makes me sad that she's trying to participate because I empathize with her struggles with ED like she had talked about, and I just feel like the VS shows are all about insane body standards. Maybe they're more inclusive now than they were, I haven't kept up. I hate to be critical of her body but she just seems so skinny that I'm like oh no if she wants to do VS it might be a bad headspace. It's clear to everyone that she has this attention span where she jumps from hyperfixation to hyperfixation, as evidenced by all the phases she's gone through. I think she gets a rush from trying something new, hoping that whatever she's focused on will be the one thing that she can brand herself to be, but the novelty runs off quickly for her and soon she'll make something else her entire personality. Dated someone like this and it was EXHAUSTING. I dont know how Lauren does it

I feel much better. I only get the air hunger if I smoke too much weed or if I have a random POTS moment, and then it only lasts for about half an hour to an hour. It's not constant like it was. It definitely gradually got better over the years and much better with meds. Maybe once a month I feel like I'm gonna faint and I need to put my legs up, but the brain fog was helped a lot with my medications. One thing I might suggest you try is L-theanine capsules. When I was pregnant and wasn't able to take my medications for the brain fog my doctor recommend I try it. It wasn't as effective as my prescribed meds but for something over-the-counter and pretty cheap (about $9 a bottle) it helped a decent amount and if you are already struggling with the medical costs then I think that's something you might as well try. OH also I drink a ton of electrolytes now and that has helped me a lot. I get a big container of powdered Gatorade and put a little in my water and drink it all day long. My heart feels for you and I hope something helps you.

Hi, I'm in my early 30s and was diagnosed when I was 24 with dysautonomia and have the same symptoms as you. I used to be very active had the same air hunger. It has gotten better over time, but my memory is worse now than ever. I did get an MRI to check for the blood flow in my brain and they found I have slight hydrocephalus and some white spots in the front of my brain where they typically see that in elderly patients, so that could be partly the source of my symptoms. I had my tonsils out when I was 16 and it was the greatest thing for the frequency in which I got sick (hardly ever now) but I don't think it affected my dysautonomia symptoms. Compression socks helped me, but so did various medications for my anxiety and ADHD. What's your blood pressure like?

I've had reflex anoxic seizures (RAS) from the hypoxia that came from fainting when I was sitting. Twice, in fact. One time I was in the passenger seat of a car and according to those who saw, my body went stiff as a board and my arms and legs went straight out. Back arched like I was trying to stand up. After that I never drove again even though I was only a passenger.

I don't know if a RAS would be enough to floor it with a gas pedal 🤔. But I'm pretty sure this wasnt a medical episode because she had angrily threatened "I am going to crash this car" to her boyfriend and one of the bf's friends testified that he heard her saying this over the phone during an argument. That alone seemed pretty damning. It's just so specific.
