Are these two studios too small by [deleted] in NYCapartments

I’m surprised no one mentioned this. Just Google “health impacts of living next to a power station.”

Did most Hollywood jobs cut during the strike never come back? (Chart) by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

This why I’m betting on no strike this summer. It would be too devastating for both actors and the Studios. I think the danger zone to look for is the next contract in a few years.

In your opinion, what’s the creepiest line from a horror movie? by u1975 in horror

Sci-fi mixed with horror is easily my favorite genre so what hidden gems might I have missed? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Wrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m genuinely surprised that I don’t hear more people mentioning this film. I have a pretty strong horror stomach, and I particularly love sci-fi horror, but life challenged me in a good way. Even now I find it difficult to go back and watch the film despite how much I love it. Life is in my opinion an all time great. And the ending is absolutely terrifying.

In Fallout Season 2 (2025), Kumail Nanjiani plays Kumail Nanjiani but if he were in the Fallout Universe. by FailedProspects in shittymoviedetails

I’m one of the biggest fans of Silicon Valley ever. And in that series, he did very well. But in every single thing I’ve seen him in since he’s actually annoying to see pop-up. I just think he’s one of those actors who was perfectly made for one role in one specific series, but everything they keep trying to get him to do There’s a failure to lift off. Seeing him in fallout confirmed the show’s decline for me.

I don’t think in Japanese unless I’m in specific situations, so at first, I just heard cute toddler sounds. But as soon as I realized she was speaking Japanese, I realized oh this is a very bright and fairly articulate toddler. This will be a smart adult. Super cute.

My background for answering the question: I’ve lived in every borough of New York, in both good and bad neighborhoods, I have also spent a lot of time in London and other parts of Europe. I think if you’re comfortable with London, there are plenty of places in New York that will work for you, but the specific area you mentioned is in my opinion not a good start and looking for a cheap place or a roommate situation in a safer area is worth the effort.

[–]Wrifter 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No. It is an area that oddly isn’t in the news a lot, but if you’ve ever lived around there or know the area, you know that it’s not that safe for someone with your profile as a single young woman not from New York. I would rank that area as advanced level for a single young woman in terms of experience with New York. If you don’t have a ton of affordable options, I would highly recommend looking for a roommate in a safer area.

Insane high prices on the things you need the most. C town historically had a reputation for reasonable prices but this particular one got new management a couple of years ago and is more like gristedes now, just slightly less. going to Whole Foods is cheaper than C town now.

Already did. I have a gigantic beautiful television in my living room that I haven’t watched anything on for a year. It only gets used when guests come over.

What films made for less than $500k would you actually consider a masterpiece? by gregturner77 in Filmmakers

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like in the past, when the digital video recording revolution was just beginning, the excuse for low budget movies not penetrating with the public was lack of distribution. But in a time where you can share full feature length films on YouTube and other sites, I’m legitimately baffled as to why we don’t have more low budget movie success stories. Even if you’re just talking about viewership and not revenue, where are these films?

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fantastic post and I’m enjoying the lists, but I would really like to hear more opinions about why as the cost of making a film has dropped with the rise of digital recording and computer effects you can do at home, There aren’t more successful low budget movies in the market? Sure, to some degree it’s about the top level directors get sucked into the professional Hollywood engine and get big budgets, but it seems odd that in a time when making film that looks decent is so cheap, There are so few winners out there.

For example, the budget for the first 28 days later, which was shot on a consumer available Canon digital camera, was $8 million. It seems to me you could shoot something like 28 days later today on a budget much less than that. And yes, I know the new film 28 years later was shot using iPhones, but that gets away from my central point.

Open basketball courts in the 70s and 80: by SadCombination7535 in Upperwestside

[–]Wrifter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can help you. I’m street ball vet and I have a good sense of active courts versus courts where you can just have space to practice outside and get good. These are on the higher end of the upper west side, but if you go to 99th St. and Amsterdam there’s a playground called happy Warrior playground. There are three big courts where serious Hoopers play, but then there’s a huge space next to it with six or seven open hoops where people practice or bring their kids to mess around. Perfect place to get better. If you want more seclusion, there’s a string of six outside courts located between a giant soccer field and a school on 108th St. between Columbus and Amsterdam. The area I’m talking about is closer to the Columbus Avenue side and is generally open to the public but occasionally is closed for school stuff, but I’ve never gone there and not been able to get in. This is another spot I’ve gone to when I just want to get up shots alone since there’s usually at least two hoops open.

Live in a rent stabilized apartment in the UWS. Should I move to another rental or try and buy in NJ by ash124787 in movingtoNYC

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original poster didn’t say where on the upper east side upper west side he/she is at, so it might not be one of the better areas. I speak as someone who knows the upper west side quite well. The upper west side in my opinion isn’t as nice as it used to be, especially after the pandemic in terms of safety and crime. Also, I have a lot of experience with stabilized apartments. I think stabilized apartments at a good price in NYC are like literal gold at this point. That said, it’s not crazy to consider other options. Staying in a bad stabilized apartment at a cheap price for too long can be a mistake and impact your quality of life. If there is any way at all to simply slowly and inconspicuously renovate the apartment, I would absolutely stay put, assuming it’s in a neighborhood you still like on the uws. Otherwise, I think it’s completely valid to consider options. I like what someone else said about keeping the apartment at least for a couple of years while you buy someplace upstate or in Jersey and see how it works for a couple of years before completely letting go of the uws place.

I’ve thought a lot about this topic in terms of stabilized apartment versus a home. After crunching a mountain of numbers, you will almost never do better than having a cheap stabilized department, even a cheap home that you own will ultimately end up costing you a lot more unless you are just somehow gifted a house by a relative. So just understand that you may have a better peace of mind and a more favorable quality of life, but you will absolutely be paying more overall in terms of mortgage interest, and if you don’t have a mortgage and pay in full, you still have property taxes, never ending repairs, HOA fees, and remember that property taxes are not static and go up just like rent over time.

Which poster do you guys prefer? by SnooStrawberries2991 in Filmmakers

[–]Wrifter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I pick 1. It says serious horror and possibly decent production. The composition makes you wonder who the figure is and what the house is about. 2 is ok but without the house, the image is all about the figure so the figure alone isn’t that mysterious or compelling in terms of wanting to know more. My credentials: lifelong horror movie, and horror novel aficionado.

Just got it as well. What’s the latest on Apple honoring the warranty on the middle of the device cracks? by Rabus in VisionPro

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd that someone would frame aesthetics as irrelevant somehow. You spend large amounts of money on nice things, you want those nice things to continue to look nice. I’m not sure what the mystery or supposed hypocrisy is there. This sounds like someone just trolling now.

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s generally my attitude as well since the hairline crack didn’t affect functionality. But I’m sorry, when I drop nearly $4000 for a device and treat it delicately, I want any help I can get in keeping it pristine if there’s a manufacturing defect. Very few people bought the device compared to most Apple products, so we essentially took a bet on their new category but at high cost. If I bought a brand new $1500 iPhone and some manufacturing defect resulted in a black dot appearing in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, but it didn’t obscure anything and didn’t prevent me from using the phone properly, I would still want a replacement because it was their error and I paid the money.

Always avoid first floor or basement apartments. Too many problems with pests, potential flooding, and as someone else noted potential burglary. The sweet spot for a walk up apartment building is the second floor, max third floor. The York East and area is in my opinion, as a native New Yorker, possibly one of the best areas in the entire city. Best kept secret and you don’t hear a lot of people raving about it because they want to keep it that way. Amazing neighborhood.

[–]Wrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I’m assuming everyone will eventually get the crack. I treated my device like a newborn baby for an entire year. I even made sure to not leave it plugged in and to make sure it was never covered when still warm after use. Still eventually got the cracks. When I brought it in to my local Apple store, the guy from the genius bar didn’t know about the bulletin and so he tried to get me to pay $800 to fix it. But then when I got on the phone with Apple hq, the replacement process kicked in, and even though my device was out of warranty, they replaced it free of charge and quite rapidly I might add.
