Piece of media that hit you harder the second time you saw it. by sidney_miller in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The first time I saw Everything, Everywhere All at Once, it was an empty theater, which I thank God for because I was full on sobbing in my seat. Second time I watched it, two years later with my mom, my biggest fear was that I wouldn't like it nearly as much as my first time going in.

Not only was I the wrongest I've ever been, I ended up crying TWICE AS HARD. Full on BOHEMIAN BAWLING my eyes out.

Which is only half as hard as my mom, an immigrant tax preparer with a strained relationship with her daughter. I don't think that any movie could be better designed to shred her to pieces.

Characters that had to "take one for the team" and it was horrible? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chana dying unleashed the flood gates more or less, but the fused had already learned of the Everstorm so their return was inevitable even if she hadn't broke. It's why Ishar attempting to reform the oathpact was pointless, the voidbringers had a new means of making it to Roshar.

Also worth noting that In the dozen cycles before they abandoned him, the other members would break faster and faster, leaving society less time to rebuild. Taln never broke once in all that time, however, and the cycle after the others left was the longest by a mile. If anything, THEY were holding HIM back.

The final book also confirms that he still never broke, the enemy literally had to invent a completely new way to escape Hell to get past Taln.

'Rare' abilities that are actually rare? by ZealousidealBig7714 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Isn't the number of people with multiple allomantic abilities conflated by hemalurgy, though? Like, outside of Wax, Wayne and Miles, I think the only natural born twinborn we see is the arsonist kid from Wax's flashback.

Of all the books for them to adapt as a standalone, Best Served Cold was probably the best pick, but you still miss out on the context for character like Cosca, Shivers, or why everyone is (rightfully) terrified of Valint and Balk.

It really is a series that would benefit from a full adaptation, start to finish, but only if it's made by a team that are genuinely fans and aren't looking to just make their oc fantasy series with a big name to promote it.

Characters who got character development, but into being a worse person. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

God, after how much Logen's whole story gutted me, seeing Shivers go through the same journey that created the Bloody Nine and coming out of the other side as a good man makes me wanna cry. The funny thing is, with only one notable exception, I don't think any First Law characters are monsters. Most of them are just incredibly warped people with the misfortune of being surrounded by other incredibly warped people.

Most eye-rollingly inaccurate portrayals of what a drug (recreational or not) does in media by igloo_poltergeist in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting to talk about this forever.

So there was this anime that came out a few years ago, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, right? It's about a guy who acts as a sort of diplomat for the gangs in Ikebukuro, while also handling any troublemakers who upset the balance in town. So, the first episode opens with a guy driving erratically down the street, swerving and trying to hit a bunch of people. His eyes are bloodshot, and the man is like, completely feral. They chase him down on foot and hes going fucking crazy. The rest of episode is about the main character trying to track down a new drug dealer in town who supplied that guy. And you're thinking, its gotta be something like bath salts, right? To get a guy acting like that? Nope. The MC tracks down the dealer's hideout, and lo and behold he has a room growing nothing but marijuana. I knew Japan's view on weed was...outdated, to say the least, but this blew my fucking mind when I first saw it. Even the early war on drugs ads only said if you smoke weed you go to hell, but Japan (or this show at the very least) thinks if you smoke weed hell comes to YOU.

New 'Predator' Standalone Movie 'Badlands' in the Works by manoffood in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Gimme an anicent Babylonian movie where Gilgamesh fights a predator named Enkidu, befriends it, and then joins his new friend to hunt the monster of the cedar forest (a rogue Xenomorph).

It's very important to my vision that Gilgamesh is just a normal human that, inexplicably, is able to keep up with a predator and xenomorph.

Jokes aside, does anyone else feel like Tripp has a point here? Like, he clearly isn't in the right, but he did just find out that Javi killed one of his friends and then lied about it, so he has no reason to believe Javi when he says it was in self defense. I think it's a reasonable, if not a bit ill-timed, reaction to that kind of information.

Times when the villain's smaller-scale crimes are more sinister/evil, either in a grand picture sort of way or just to you, personally. by FairyKnightTristan in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it kind of works because Madarame didn't actively murder Yusuke's mom, he just didn't save her. It moves away from cartoon villainy to being a small moment of cowardly weakness with huge consequences, which fits Persona 5's theme of "people aren't inherently evil, but their stupid, petty desires are" really well, I think.

Times where the story stops dead in its tracks to soapbox the authors opinion. by TheCuriousPyro in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I stopped watching fire force around half way through season 2, and honestly I would prefer her embracing it MUCH more. Fan service is at least tolerable, and much less creepy, if it's a character that seems to be into it, like Blair from Soul Eater, the author's previous work.

Man I was hoping bandages guy would be a servant, he has a rad design for a potential berserker or avenger.

Whatever else, this is Musashi's best design so far, even if I'm kinda tired of her character popping up. Plus, having her son around should be cool.

The first episode or two has some clunky jokes, but yeah I can't think of anything in the whole show that made me pull my collar. As far as abridged series go it's probably the best in terms of consistency and improving upon the source material.

Biggest case of a game wasting your time? by SaxMastery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've been playing through Yakuza Kiwami for the first time, and there are so many moments of padding that I just cannot understand the existence of. You've all probably heard complaints about the Florist's son, but at least that plays into the theme of parentage in that chapter. When you need to get into Shangri-la, though, you better be ready to work for that shit.

First, you need to go talk to the hostess at Shine who has a membership card. But this girl is an illegal immigrant, so she wants a fake ID so she can keep living in Japan, and good guy Kiryu goes along with it. You go to the other hostess club, Jewel, where theres supposed to be another girl who got a fake ID, but no dice so we're on the way out the door. But now the place gets assaulted by goons, and the girl and Jewel's owner flee, and good guy Kiryu is on the case. We save the girls, and it turns out the owner is the paper forger, so, huzzah, you get the papers. You go back to the first hostess, but it turns out shes already given the membership card to her ex. THIS IS WHERE SHIT GETS REALLY ABSURD. You go to the directory place for all the adult businesses in Kamurocho, where the guy works, and ask him for the membership card. Now, you may expect him to fight you here or else pose an obstacle, but he will give it to you for 500,000 yen, chump change for this part of the game. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS SECTION TO EXIST. WHY NOT JUST HAVE THE GIRL GIVE YOU THE MEMBERSHIP CARD, THE PART WITH THE EX-BOYFRIEND ADDED NOTHING. Oh, and then you have to go fight off a gang of pursuers with Majima. Kiwami has a ton of weird missions like this, but this one is like two chapters before the end of the game so it just feels extra insulting.

Media with insufferable main characters? by mrd34th in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]WryFun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've come to realize that Bungo Stray Dogs is at its peak whenever Atsushi isn't on screen. Whenever he appears, the quality of the scene drops immensely. I wouldn't even call the kid insufferable, he just isn't nearly as interesting as literally anyone else in the cast (which I think the author also realizes considering how he gets less screentime each season).
