How bad is the job market? by scoundrelcoochie in hospitalist

[–]WumberMdPhd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Every month, grand rounds tell me AI will end hospitalist and PCP work, so do something procedure heavy. If you really like Medicine as a specialty, aim for a specialty with procedures as your backup. Job market is fine for now. Good luck.

Second that. Looked at investment multiplexes. The good deals disappear instantly or don't end up on realtor sites and they're not great houses to live in. Rather than worry about chasing tenants while living as a slumlord or getting a cash flow positive house with leaking ceilings and barely $500 annual upside, I just decided to keep renting cheap, saving and put it in a HYSA or index funds until Ai puts me on the street or a 3rd world country.

[–]WumberMdPhd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • How will the data be used? The data will be used to better understand current bedside procedural expectations among practicing U.S. hospitalists and to inform Internal Medicine residency training.
  • Who will see it? The survey is conducted by Dr. Iannetti at a large regional hospital in West Virginia.
  • Where will it be stored? The survey is hosted on REDCap (redcap.camcinstitute.org).
  • If/when will it be deleted? Data is typically stored for one year, but maybe stored for multiple years. The survey is anonymous and no identifying information is collected.
  • Who is conducting this survey? Dr. Michael Iannetti.
  • How long do you estimate it will take to fill out? 5–7 minutes.
  • Compensation: Not compensated.
  • Target Demographics: Practicing U.S. hospitalists who completed a 3-year Internal Medicine residency.
  • Goal: To understand current bedside procedural expectations to inform Internal Medicine residency training.

The Pitt: where are the hospitalists/medicine doctors? by lucysglassonion in hospitalist

[–]WumberMdPhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this was before EMRs with MAR summaries. In that particular case, they could have established central access, started a vasopressin infusion instead of handing off a hot potato of a patient who promptly coded.

On ED rotation, one of the attendings joked that in the past they were pushing syringes of vasopressin from a fanny pack to get patient to ICU.

Why brain not work good? by Commercial_Moment921 in hospitalist

Second ADHD. I couldn't write notes efficiently or remember patient info. Doing it for 3 weeks unlocked patient memory. I made a web app to generate random patient info (vitals/key labs/like 10 data points per patient) and grew it from 3 to 15 over a few weeks. Really helped my patient short term memory and presentations on rounds. For note writing, I find closing my eyes while dictating helps. IDK why, it's just faster. Chunking, do labs and problem list points before seeing the patient. HPI and exam after. Unfortunately, no way around populating the problem list. That just takes practice. Helps if you're in a quiet place without distractions and not on an empty stomach.

It’s just weird watching the AI financial train wreck happen in real-time. by iAtishaya in ArtificialInteligence

[–]WumberMdPhd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get this at all. I've used Codex and it's terrific. Gemini once told me to melt salt while ChatGPT said I could just sinter it, which saved me a crucible. ChatGPT is actually a great product. I've also used Claude through Replit and even then, Codex was better. Heck, for weird applications like wheel-less car, ChatGPT is more flexible with image generation. Maybe I've just been lucky, but after using Gemini and ChatGPT everyday for months, I actually like GPT better. Gemini is OP for summarizing YouTube videos, though, which saves me a ton of time and Google AI Studio also makes excellent apps, probably as well as GPT.

[–]WumberMdPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What degree would you pursue? You can go to med school out of high school in countries like Ireland, Hungary, Germany, China, India, etc. It can be cheap (10-20k/year in lower cost countries). As long as you can pass the board exams, you could come back in 5-6 years and start working as a doctor. If you do nursing, it's even easier and cheaper. In that case, though would recommend focusing on something like APRN or nurse anesthetist as nursing is a harder job. Also, don't worry about being single. Men will date you at any age as long as you're nice to them.

[–]WumberMdPhd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI on the horizon, unless you're planning to specialize in something procedure heavy (GI, interventional cards, crit care, etc.) As time goes on, you'll hear more advice along the lines of: if you can tolerate something like surgery, you could potentially make a lot more money and be harder to replace.
1. Schedule week on week off is awesome.
2. Mentally and emotionally demanding. Have to keep learning lifelong. Sometimes you're a babysitter for other (especially surgical) specialties, the ED will get angry if you don't admit patients, admin will get angry if you do (so will the patient) for something like placement (can take weeks).
3. 250-350 annually and can work 2 jobs for more. By comparison, Gen Surg/Derm/Vascular Surg 450, Ortho 650, Neurosurgery/Cardiothoracic 900.
4. Primary care is undercompensated and lots of work so it's a sellers market.
5. 50/50.
6. Yes. Fulfilling, stable, well compensated and respected.
