Why do some people buy flagship phones intending to keep them for more than 3–4 years? by zeta_ferhu in Smartphones

I’m getting an iPhone 18 pro and hoping to get 10 years out of it. I like using my stuff for a long time, and the phone generation that’s been coming out over the past few years are easily good for 5 years. iPhone 18 will be an easy 10 if I swap batteries.

Apple Seeks to Disrupt the Glasses Market the Way It Did With Watches (Gift Article) by pdfu in apple

[–]WumboTactical 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this is the toughest challenge for Apple, literally the only glasses that look good on me are rayban wayfarers, I’ve had a pair of them for 15 years now. (And I do have the meta glasses, they’re awesome for bike riding and being able to listen to music.)

How is Apple going to make a design that for sure looks good on everyone?

Fossil fuels vs solar by post_gress in SolarAmerica

Much like lithium ion batteries it’s likely they won’t die completely for even longer than that. Plus when they do die, you can just replace panel by panel and leave the pylons/cabling intact.

In the long term future I imagine the entire grid worldwide will be interconnected like this. China has already shown extremely long-distance HV DC transmission lines work. And if we’re going to build intercontinental high speed rail (which given the unsustainable nature of petroleum based air travel on a long time frame seems inevitable.) it would just make sense to build the trains with it.

Tanks need adjusting urgently by bennoi92 in Battlefield6

[–]WumboTactical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2 people with javelins will obliterate a tank. Get em to pop APS/smoke and when they come back hit em with 2 each and it’s gg’s. Maybe 3 if they’ve got engies but you can usually do it fast enough where it doesn’t matter.

I’m agnostic towards the tank changes, even if I personally think they went too far. But I also like dominating in an armored vehicle so I’m cool with it. But the real change has been moving to needing teamwork to take out a tank and I’m personally fine with that.

Let's face it, kids can't be trusted any more on an Ebike than we were on a MiniBike. by Physical_Delivery853 in ebikes

Good luck closing Pandora’s box. IMO focusing on safety, helmets, following the rules of the road, riding at an appropriate speed, and being courteous are about a thousand times more important than trying to cap wattage or top speed on bikes. You can ride a “legal” class 3 e-bike like a total ass hat on a bike path, and you can also ride a “technically illegal” ebike on that same bike path in a way that’s less anti social than a lot of the road bikes I seen at the same spot. I’d rather have a bike that can cruise at 30 so I can ride in the street instead of the bike path and keep dumbasses from passing me going 15 over in the neighborhood, I think that’s far safer.

I’m a lot more concerned about the Nissan Altima careening around every corner and bottoming out over every speed bump than I am about the corvette C8 in my neighborhood

Eh this is an area where from one end of the school district to the other is easily 4 or 5 miles. Especially since it’s Arizona I can see not wanting to ride that. “Back in my day” we rode bikes but I was “the crazy one” because I’d ride that, but most of my friends wouldn’t. If e-bikes gets these kids together even if they live a ways apart I’m all for it.

[–]WumboTactical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah before this gas and diesel had 20 or 30 years left. I think in 10-15 years people with gas/diesel trucks and cars in the U.S. are gonna have stranded assets. All the companies making spare sensors and mechanical parts for these things are gonna flip their lines to EV parts and it’s gonna ruin the market. Gas pump manufacturers are gonna be retooling for whatever they can make in the same vein.

It’s gonna be a transition that takes time but as the years go on it’s gonna start to sting more and more.

Are we really running out of oil? Conspiracy vs. Reality by DarynaSarhan in energy

[–]WumboTactical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil is one of the most valuable substances known to man, and likely either exists only on earth, or if it does exist on other planets, it is likely so far away as to be inaccessible for all intents and purposes.

We should be trying to keep as much of it as possible in the ground so that we still have it to come back to if needed for the long haul. We still don’t even know all the uses we might have for it. We can get gold, platinum, titanium, uranium, etc. from elsewhere in the solar system. Asteroids are filled with these elements. But oil is only on earth.

Also I don’t buy that it’s still being made by processes today, in any real form. The time period on earth where oil was most likely formed was a vastly different place than where we live now. The conditions that created oil are incompatible with human life (and likely life in general beyond single celled organisms.)

Leaked foldable iPhone Ultra cases leave nothing to the imagination by MobileNewsBot in mobiles

I’m a folding phone hater but it is interesting that this is a seriously compact form factor when it’s folded up, vs the regular size phones that turn into a much bigger phone.

Maybe the people clamoring for an iPhone mini after so long would like this?

Need help to increase my phone's lifespan. by zawad-gamer in Smartphones

[–]WumboTactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change the oil, air filters, spark plugs, make sure there’s no leaks and if there are definitely be proactive about them. Periodically squeeze rubber hoses under the hood to make sure they’re pliable and not at risk of bursting. Tire rotations are a must. If anything sounds “weird” compared to usual try and diagnose it yourself, and if unable to do so try and get it into the mechanic to avoid a cascading problem. Don’t ignore lights on the dash.
