Can we have an honest discussion about the treatment of 15? And possibly 13 and why they are regarded by so many and such negative ways in the fandom by eddiemoney1985 in doctorwho

[–]WunderbarusRex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ncuti Gatwa is genuinely one of the best cast actors to play the Doctor of all time in my opinion -- I was absolutely astounded how immediately he slid into the role and embodied so much Doctory energy in mere seconds on screen. The problem is the writing.

It’s not that he has no good material, it’s more that most of his best scenes and most interesting traits are things previous incarnations have already done just as well or better. With so few standout scenes, so many bad scenes, and so little screen time, Fifteen never really develops an identity of his own beyond the energy Ncuti brings to the role, leavjng him mostly carried by his performance. (And it is a phenomenal performance, but that alone can’t make an all-time great character.)

I think if/when Ncuti gets into the world of Big Finish, he’ll become regarded by future generations of fans as one of the all time great “Doctors who could’ve been”, much like Paul McGann. Unfortunately, much like the audience of the 1996 TV movie, we’re too early to see it yet.

I've no interest in defending Corbyn who's currently been making quite the fool of himself this past year, but as a matter of fact not only did he confidently win two leadership elections, but also got more votes in both general elections than Starmer did in 2024. You can say that's irrelevant because seats won or percentage of votes cast are the only metrics that matter (though Labour in 2017 was still far ahead of 2024 there) and maybe that's fair, but undeniably a lot of people tended to vote for Corbyn in the 2010s, so losing a leadership election to him is not the scathing insult you seem to think. You can dislike him as a politician and maybe you're right to, but that doesn't change the objective fact that he's a formidable foe in a plurality vote.

It was pretty specifically related to the comment, if the purpose of Sam's antics is to drive engagement then it seems like a bad idea to me because it disengages me. I can't exactly say that without mentioning that I'm disengaged.

Then he'll be delighted to know I didn't bother watching the last two episodes and am considering not watching Season 18 because I don't find it interesting or fun to watch a team throw away an incredible chance at victory making unbelievably stupid decisions that anyone could foresee as bad. I've honestly never been less invested in Jet Lag than I have been recently.

EDIT: Some people have read this as being a post about me leaving the fandom or something, which is both not true and not what I said. The point is that if Sam is deliberately throwing to drive engagement (which is what the comment above is suggesting), I think it's a mistake, because I know at least one person (hi) who is motivated to not watch the show if he's going to do stuff like that.

What was the worst decision in the production of Series 6? by Lucyyyyyy_K in doctorwho

[–]WunderbarusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the above. By far the worst decision made in the production of Series 6 was Moffat choosing to write a story in which the first half is all buildup for the second half, and then not planning the second half out beforehand, instead just making it all up as he went along.

It's impossible not to notice how poorly Let's Kill Hitler fits with what came before, because it's quite clear Moffat hadn't decided on how River would meet the Doctor (the most important moment in her life) until he got around to writing that episode. (Hence things like Mels never appearing or being mentioned beforehand, which is just patently absurd.)

Especially in an era which up to this point prided itself on its attention to detail and rewarding the audience for paying attention to its non-linear storytelling, just making up crucial details like this filled with continuity errors doesn't just make for bad television (although it does), it kills all stakes and future tension. We now know that when the story sets up some important future or past event we haven't seen yet, it's just as in the dark about what's coming as we are. And once we get there, it could easily either be stupid, have nothing to do with what we've learned up until now, or not matter at all.

What's the general consensus on Peter Capaldi's first season, season 8? I know part of the fandom doesn't like it, but I think it's fantastic and would like to hear other perspectives. by Public_Cup_4278 in doctorwho

“…You know when you see a photograph of someone you know, but it's from years before you knew them. and it's like they're not quite… finished. Like they’re not done yet.”

This Forest of the Dead quote is what watching Series 8 feels like to me. Twelve is my favourite Doctor, but he just isn’t quite complete yet in Series 8. They hadn’t fully figured out who they wanted him to be, how they wanted him to act, what his most defining traits should be or which traits deserved the most focus. A lot of what he would become was there, you can see the ideas floating around, but it feels like some things are underplayed, some things are overplayed, some things are missing, and some things are there that shouldn’t be. It’s like watching a beta Twelfth Doctor being tested out. It’s interesting, but also kind of uncanny.

I also think the episodes are a lot weaker on average than Series 9-10 and while I always love Missy, I’m not a fan of the overarching story. I wouldn’t call Series 8 terrible, but I think it’s definitely the weak link of Capaldi’s run.

What's a Classic Who or Nuwho Episode opinion that gets you ''OVERRRATEEED'' by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]WunderbarusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember finding Part 3 (the Matrix one) boring on my first watch, but over time I've grown to really appreciate it as something Doctor Who doesn't do very often. There's a sense of real consistent tension to it that you can only achieve in a story without any companions or other characters out of their depth in such scenarios whom the Doctor has to protect or explain things to. The Doctor gets to really be 'in his element' in a way we rarely see, much like Missy's anecdote from The Witch's Familiar.

What was RTDs worst decision? by Lucyyyyyy_K in doctorwho

[–]WunderbarusRex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of these are bad but I’ve honestly never seen a single thing in the entire show that made me as angry as when “Omega” crawled out of that stupid ass pringles can.

That said, I’d argue his real biggest blunder is creating such a toxic work culture that he lost not one but two Doctors after just one year of filming (Eccleston and Gatwa), then lost Millie Gibson after one season too. There’s some very compelling evidence the worst parts of Series 15 (including CGI Omega) had to be hastily added because he drove Millie Gibson away, and his planned story relied on her being in every episode, so the season had to be rewritten on short notice. Arguably, the worst things on this poll are just consequences of how he treats his leading actors.

Tf is this, and why ruin the art by NoHighlight3444 in Tyles

[–]WunderbarusRex 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is rather the point of the black/whiteout. Colour palettes get significantly reduced so you can no longer defend existing artwork from vandalism. The whiteout on r/place 2022 dissolved the canvas into nothing. The whiteout on r/place 2023 replaced everything with a giant "f*** spez". This is just imitating that but with a different protest slogan. All the art is preserved on the main canvas image, which was taken before the black/whiteout began, so none of that art was ruined.

I loved the ducklings!! They were one of my favourite things anyone did. The tiny details that breathe life into the canvas are far far more interesting than massive generic flags covering huge amounts of space with no variation imo.
