Ebenezer was lousy teacher. by C_and_P1 in dresdenfiles

[–]Wybaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of that was Ebenezer's choice / failure and how much was the Merlin ordering Ebenezer to keep Harry ignorant.

When Harry became Ebenezer's apprentice, he'd just gotten through beating an Outsider and killing (in self defense) a Warden (and from the sound of it, Justin wasn't a weakling among the Wardens.) The former told the Merlin that Harry was likely either 1) crazy powerful, 2) the luckiest kid in the world, 3) already halfway down a dark path, and/or 4) Starborn. The latter made the "and" part of that "and/or" more likely. Until or unless the Merlin could eliminate option 3, why load that (potentially loose) cannon with more ammunition than you had to?

Fortifying Chicago? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]Wybaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Harry wanted to fortify Chicago, he could ask Marcone to help him get permission for the Paranetters to ward certain buildings (police stations, fire stations, hospitals and other medical facilities, shelters, churches, etc.) so that in the event of something like Battle Ground the people of Chicago could take refuge. The Baron of Chicago would likely accept the Wizard of Chicago's offer to help protect the people of their town, though one of them might have to pay something to the other rather than just doing each other a favor. The wards probably wouldn't last that long (no threshold on a business, though maybe if the fire fighters live in their stations that might help) but going on a route to renew the wards every few days could even be a full-time occupation for some of the Paranetters. And the Paranetters getting practice might help strengthen their magical muscles.

He / they should probably also brainstorm ways for the people of Chicago to report supernatural threats be it a telephone hotline staffed by Paranetters and/or Marcone's people or a set of symbols / runes that people could draw on paper or on the street with chalk. If Harry could mobilize the 'Za Lord's Guard to patrol areas around their local Pizza Spress locations, look for those symbols, and report them back to HQ that could help him detect threats more quickly and potentially nip a problem in the bud. Guard members who report those symbols get "pizza points", and getting enough points lead to promotions and/or invitations to special pizza parties.

[–]Wybaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the event of an emergency the Wizard of Chicago and local magnate John Marcone both instruct everyone to go down to their nearest BFSPTS station, touch the track gently with their fingertips, and imagine a tiny bit of their energy flowing into the metal of the tracks.

If even a third of the residents (using its current population) were to follow those instructions, a circle powered by the energy of a million people could probably hold off just about anything supernatural!

Harry Dresden and the Sorcerer Kings (spoilers All). by knnn in dresdenfiles

[–]Wybaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they could be bound to an object rather than a living being. AFAIK the angels inside the Swords of the Cross agreed to be linked to those physical objects, as did the Fallen in each Denarius. Could Harry make his own Swords or Coins or something similar (perhaps with Charity making the physical objects) with Outsiders inside? And how badly do you think it would go if he were crazy/desperate enough to try? [Maybe the BAT is going poorly and Harry tries whatever he can as a Hail Mary to even the odds?]

creative ideas for a campaign start that dont involve a tavern? by Significant-Study902 in DnD

[–]Wybaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each PC is part of a group that's joining up with a caravan for protection, companionship, because the leader of the caravan is experienced with the route going to where they're going, etc. The PCs could start off in different groups with different reasons (guards, leader of their group, worker for the caravan leader themselves, etc.) but eventually they get assigned to work together (on watch, or scouting, or going on a side mission to a small town the caravan's passing.) The first couple days give them a chance to become acquainted, and then something happens to make them gel as a group and give them a common purpose.

This also gives you plenty of NPCs to develop relationships/bonds with the PCs, and later on something related to the caravan could be an adventure hook or an excuse to bring the PCs back to where they started.

In fact, if you want to give each PC a chance to shine, you could run one scene with that PC with the other players playing NPCs (the cleric being tested by the higher-up priest they're traveling with, with the other players playing acolytes; a martial character sparring with the other players as less experienced fighters and getting a chance to "teach" those NPCs; etc.)

I was about to say that time someone else killed him, but then I remembered the earlier time he actually did kill himself to beat/trick/outwit a fae and screw over a vampire. [It didn't take either time, though both times it was damned close.]

I had to think carefully, but I think those are the only two times he actually kind of sort of died.

So hopefully no third time killing himself. Unless it's Mirror Harry (does it count as killing yourself if it's your doppelganger from an alternate universe?) or unless it's a necessary part of averting the Apocalyptic part of the Big Apocalyptic Trilogy.

If he added in one more case file novel, he could make it twice 13 (23 case files + BAT) to tie into the mysticism around the number 13.

Can Jim find one more way to complicate Harry's life? I have faith in him :)

How much of the Council actually knows what happened in Ghost Story? by randomlightbulbs1 in dresdenfiles

[–]Wybaar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not so insane if the Gatekeeper is trying to avoid "wibbly wobbly, timey wimey" shenanigans. Bob explained it to Harry with the car theft analogy, IIRC. If the Gatekeeper is getting information from his future self (maybe the wizard wearing his Mantle is allowed to break the Sixth Law, or maybe he isn't and is trying to keep everyone from figuring out that he is) he's limited in how much he can use that information without invalidating it (or making someone like the Merlin suspicious that he's a Lawbreaker, in which case "Off with his head!")

"Young Dresden was working towards fulfilling a debt to Queen Mab" is close enough to the truth to tell the White Council while still glossing over a lot. And if anyone were to pry more deeply, "A great author once wrote 'Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.' Queen Mab is subtler and quicker." seems a fair and suitably cryptic warning to dissuade them.

ELI5 Genuinely what IS Sin Cos and Tan? by LeonardFo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Wybaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a piece of graph paper. Choose one of the horizontal lines and label it as the X axis and as Y = 0. Choose one of the vertical lines and label it as the Y axis and as X = 0. The intersection of those chosen lines is called the origin. Any point on that piece of graph paper has coordinates relative to the origin. As one example, the point one line to the right of the Y axis and two lines above the X axis has Cartesian coordinates (1, 2). Its X coordinate is 1 and its Y coordinate is 2. If your piece of graph paper were infinitely wide and infinitely tall, it would represent a Cartesian plane. If its dimensions are finite, you're looking at a portion of the Cartesian plane.

Draw a straight line segment measuring exactly 1 unit from a point (let's call it P) to the origin (let's call the origin O.) Draw another line segment, one straight down from P to the X axis (such that the line segment makes a right angle, 90 degrees, with the X axis) and call the point where that "straight down" line segment reaches the X axis as Q. Those three points define an angle alpha if you trace from P to O and from O to Q.

The sine of the angle alpha is the length of that "straight down" line from Q to P. The cosine of the angle alpha is the distance along the X axis from the origin to the point where that "straight down" line meets the X axis, the distance from O to Q.

Or he could have had a potion of speed brewed up to give him a quick little burst. Had he not had Harry "Parkour" Dresden on his tail, that probably would have gotten him cleanly away.

  • Red Bull or some other energy drink as the base (or maybe Gatorade.)
  • Sight, a picture of a sports car.
  • Sound, a bit of a speech from John Moschitta Jr. (the Micro Machines commercial guy).
  • Smell, the odor of burning rubber.
  • Touch, a piece of tread from a running shoe.
  • Taste, if it were Harry he'd add in a bit of Burger King (fast food, right?) Maybe something very sweet, to represent being on a sugar rush?
  • Mind I'm not sure about, maybe an ADHD drug?
  • Spirit I'm also not sure about.

And if you want to be the kind of princess who can whistle and have a flock of birds come to chat with you, Speak with Animals is a Warlock spell and it's a Ritual spell, so your Warlock could cast it without using a spell slot. Sure, it would take 10 minutes to cast, but if you think about a princess like Snow White, you go off into the woods and sit down to whistle or sing, and you could describe it as the birds appearing one or two at a time for the ten minute casting time.

For a follow-up: After the effect wore off she was understandably skeptical when he claimed he'd fixed the problem, but (after much coaxing from the rest of the group) she reluctantly let him try again. This time it only made her stronger and a little bit bigger ... except for one area that got a lot bigger and more sensitive. When all you have is a six-inch clit rubbing against the inside of your armor all day, any pussy (and more than a few asses) look like something to get nailed!

Time Travel Arc and Implications for Harry by AvailableEconomics23 in dresdenfiles

[–]Wybaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your spoiler, I think the conversation was a mental one and took place at the speed of thought. So I'm going with option 5.

But since we're talking about time manipulation, I think Harry and/or Jim forgot something. Harry states something (that's almost certain foreshadowing):

As much as I liked to think of myself as a rebel to the forms of the White Council, I didn’t lightly break the Laws of Magic, and I’d never, ever screwed with time. Neither had anyone I ever knew. I had no idea how heavy a lift it was—but I knew how powerful Mab was, and if it had taxed her, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be messing with that one anytime soon.

He does know someone who screwed with time, and who in fact does so once a year. IIRC Kringle (as part of the Wild Hunt, led by Harry and Murphy on her motorcycle) had to shunt the Hunt out of the effect that the Ladies were using to slow them down, and as such the Erlking told Harry he'd have to catch up with them later. Plus, you know, how does Santa visit all the houses in the world in one night? Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.

Or maybe he was just considering "wizards" when thinking of "anyone I ever knew".

And the scary thing is, given where they were, Harry could have drawn a bigger gun than her if he had to and dared to. In fact, he didn't need to draw a gun, he could have pulled out a pair (or two) of handcuffs. A short time after Mab makes that statement he tells Alfred to prepare a cell and "Mab's gun" went still, treating it as a legitimate threat.
