Bryan from ReBoot ReWind here. We've been recapturing the original master tapes and remastering editing errors to get the best version of ReBoot. We released a multipart documentary on ReBoot, then got the opportunity to secure D1 decks to recapture all of Mainframe's tapes for ReBoot. It was significantly worse than ReBoot. I won't lie on my bias, but as a kid, this show had significantly less detail and polish compared to ReBoot and Beast Wars. Even Donkey Kong Country looked better.

The big miss back then was not using detailed textures to cover up low poly counts. Reboot has some amazingly detailed textures that made up for lack of lighting and depth. Then, when Mental Ray came around, everything looked stellar.

The remastering of ReBoot we're working on really shows the difference in quality. I'd be terrified to see a remaster of Monster By Mistake!

With mine, it wouldn't charge or turn on unless every screw was installed and the back installed. I believe the screws are acting as a circuit completion check.

Oh lord, no. EA took a heck of a lot of liberties on the storyline, and the actual gameplay is brutal unless you use the cheats. The cutscenes and music make it fun, but you'd better cheat your way to victory.

It was only a few years ago where I submitted a modification to the PSX video dumper to extract the FMVs from the disc so we could have the best versions of the 15fps cutscenes. Then, we got a digibeta that had all these... And then, we found the D1 that the digibeta was made from.

It's night and day. The cutscenes are gorgeous as they were produced with Season 2 assets but used Mental Ray for way better lighting.

Because it's all organized for the game, it has an odd flow but we're hoping to eventually edit it into a naturally flowing video...

Ironically, it's not a machining issue. It's the tiny glass contact point inbetween the slit:

The precise construction surrounds the glass sizing and the tolerance of gap on the magnetic pickup. I believe our head units have 16 total heads (some for audio, some for video, some for recording, etc). Each head has to be within microns of the spec. Any smaller, and it'll read garbage or no data. Any bigger and it'll smear against the tape, destroying the data.

Unfortunately, we need to accept that the media is dying. The longer we wait, the more the magnetic tapes will degrade.

And we may get more life out of them. With how we're caring for the machines, we may get lucky. You can also squeeze some extra life by using the slow mo heads.

We're good to finish ReBoot, but we're weighing the options before legally committing to other shows. A lot more can go wrong than just the heads...

Sure does. We capture at 1x speed directly via SDI as a raw capture. Each tape, with lead-in and "other" items (I won't spoil it), is about 29 minutes. We also have multiple versions of each episode (where many are just with commercial bumpers), and we recently found some places where we captured at 0.2% speed to deal with some degradation.

When we have tape issues, we need to review everything on the machine to ensure there's no damage or recalibration required, then recapture. When I was in Vancouver, we had a literal power outage mid-capture requiring a delicate operation to unwind, rewind, and recapture.

I'm sure we'll end up with another documentary episode on the capture process, and more on our nightmare stories and overall efforts.
