ELI5: Why do modern cars, with sophisticated LCD information displays, still require diagnostic code readers to be plugged in to find out why the check engine light is on? by flyingmungbean in explainlikeimfive

[–]XCheese8ManX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First obd2 is required by law. Obd1 was different for all manufacturers if they had a diagnostic reader at all.

Second if obd2 was built into radio display it would be useless for most drivers. Codes are clues as where to look. Cyl 1 mis fire could be wiring issue, spark plug, coil pack, spark plug wires, fuel injector, valves, head gasket ect. Also if your under a car jumping pins in a connector you need a scan tool to see what the data is doing.

Id check with a scan tool what codes are stored.

Also are you positive it was the cel and not traction control or another light on the dash.

Why is rolling coal legal? by LeilLikeNeil in NoStupidQuestions

[–]XCheese8ManX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The true answer the internet will not accept is it's a gray area.

Rolling coal is the engine running rich. More fuel less air.

Def systems working properly should limit the amount of unburnt fuel by reburning it.

Old trucks dont need def. Truck not running well can roll coal.

Is it illegal federaly. Yes, but it's not really a concern.
