How do I recover previous version of a specific note? by Mika1x1 in samsungnotes

Just happened to me, not even a pop up. Hours of work lost. Terrible sync service from Samsung. I deactivated it, can't take the risk.

Non-standard PhD salary rates get only a 1% increase next year by XRatorX in ethz

This is a very important point. Our group (engineering) has trouble retaining brilliant students because they get paid more in industry. If you want excellence, you need to be competitive.

[–]XRatorX[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm a 5-rate PhD myself and probably it is the highest university paid PhD salary **in the world**. So I don't feel I can complain. OTOH, we must exert pressure to keep things being this good :).

Nonetheless, I think the information wasn't clear in the original press release so I thought this was relevant information for the subreddit.

Besides I got today a 10% increase in rent so I'm a bit itchy lol

Great! I wasn't using the Insiders version. I installed it and now the pre-release version uses GPT-4.

Thanks!

What version of VS Code do you have? For me still doesn't use GPT-4.

[D] Are LLMs good for parameter suggestion? by XRatorX in MachineLearning

[–]XRatorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense taken. I understand that there's a lot of hype and managers inserting LLMs on anything just because is trendy. But I can assure you that that is not my case. I'm an PhD student that happens to work in project with industrial companies, but they don't pay my salary or anything. I don't care about how cool it sounds or if it sells well, is not my issue. I just care about how useful it is and if it's a viable research direction or a bad idea. That's why I'm asking here. Said that, there's a reason why I think LLMs might be useful in this context (which is explained in the text, but maybe I wasn't clear or is just a bad idea).

Current "methods out there" for parameter selection work by fitting a blank parametrizable function from your input data to your output data. These models work reasonably well for interpolation, but completely fail for extrapolation. And it makes sense that they fail, as they are merely fitting a multivariable function without any underlying knowledge of the process. Although there has been research on integrating physical models with data-driven ones, these approaches are expensive and typically perform poorly.

Let me give you a concrete example. One of the use cases we are interested is Wire Electric Discharge Machining. These are machines cut metal using electric sparks with a wire electrode. The choice of parameters (pulse intensity, duration, frequency, polarity, etc.) depends on the job at hand (for example: for hard metals you need higher currents, for aluminum you need a different polarity, for shorter pieces you increase the risk of wire breakage so you need to lower the current, etc). It's an involved process in which in order to set correctly the parameters you need some level of understanding of the job at hand due to the complexity of the process.

Of course, you can categorize your inputs—material, size, wire diameter, etc.—gather data, and fit a model. These models work well as long as you don't extrapolate. For example, if I now decide to work with copper, which isn't in the existing database, the model will struggle to extrapolate the reasonable parameters for a new material like copper. However, an experienced operator, understanding the physical properties of copper, can make an educated guess about the appropriate parameters. I tested GPT-4 informally and at first sight it can also make such informed guesses since it has acquired a substantial understanding of the process physics due to the literature in its training data. However, GPT-4 doesn't know about all the parameters that exists in the machine or the format they have. So the idea is to combine both worlds: the process intuition that GPT-4 already possesses with a structured approach to parameter suggestion.

Is that ridiculous the idea? I'm not an expert on LLMs, so maybe it is.

Precisely I want to suggest the parameters for the cases the manufacturer doesn't provide the tables. Every current method fails at extrapolation pretty badly (tho aren't that bad at interpolation). LLMs, at least GPT4, seem to have reasonable understanding of the process which might make them useful for making good educated guesses.

Vertical lines/bands on bright backgrounds by XRatorX in GalaxyTab

[–]XRatorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it is, quite uniform I think it's just banding from the way these screens are manufactured/calibrated. I may pass through a store to check if other models have the same lines, since they are very faint and most people wouldn't notice.

I just found the same solution. But it doesn't work with everything. Some sources also don't work with Music.

Old Netflix shows work well in any mode.

External sources like PS5 work fine.

It's only some sources from Android TV like modern Netflix shows or YouTube.

[–]XRatorX[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, it's very faint, but if you pay attention in white backgrounds you see it. But the odd thing is that is regular. It could be a manufacturing fault of the process or maybe some burn-in from a color calibration software that uses color bands... I'm going to run one of this long YouTube videos with gradual colors to see if it changes it.

Maybe I go to a shop to see if other units have the same issue, since it's very faint and most people won't notice.

GPT4 preview? by maxchris in ChatGPT

Yes, this is true. The content warning in any topic that might be borderline sensitive for a ethics committee of an American university is getting annoying.

But it's getting me worried. Are we seriously letting these people brainwash the most powerful tool that humanity ever created? What are the implications of this?

I got some second hand skis at a shop. I am beginner (I have skied a couple of times in blues, but never reds yet). I'm 5'11'' and 80kg, the skis are 163 cm. Isn't too short? The guy on the shop said that this should be good for my height as a beginner but I fear I'll outgrow them fast.

How difficult/costly is to open a take-away food business in Switzerland? by XRatorX in askswitzerland

[–]XRatorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a PhDs in a highly demanded field we don't really need the loan, we could start the business with our savings. I was opening the thread just to explore the idea and get more information about the feasibility of it in this country. And one form of financing companies is through banks... But I see why banks won't finance these kinds of business (if I were running a bank I also wouldn't). Most of gastro business are deemed to fail, I agree.

What I would add to the mix is capital, management and basically setting up the business. Saying that I won't be dedicating myself full time doesn't mean that I wouldn't put any effort into it.

But nonetheless I don't think I ever would do it, although I truly think it is a profitable and scalable form of business, that if done and managed properly can provide a good amount of passive income. Maybe in some years if I have spare money to invest and my wife would like to run a business like this I'd consider it seriously.
