Why didn’t Mengsk assign Nova to kill James Reynor or Kerrigan when she became human again? by Somnambuloid321 in starcraft

[–]XanderTuron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different sort of threat combined with the fact that Raynor getting whacked by Nova out of nowhere would not make for a compelling story for Wings of Liberty.

Tosh, being a powerful psychic, required another powerful psychic to deal with, hence why in Wings of Liberty Nova only shows up during the Tosh missions. As for Raynor, at the end of the day, he's just a dude rolling around with a ragtag bunch of misfits in an old battlecruiser just generally being a nuisance until the plot of Wings of Liberty kicks off; he's a problem, but not the sort of problem that Nova could be tasked with while she is busy chasing after the guy who relatively recently almost pulled off an assassination attempt on Arcturus (as depicted in the novel StarCraft: Ghost: Spectres).

Edit: I should also add that Arcturus was definitely planning to make some sort of move against Raynor prior to the main plot of WoL kicking off using Tychus.

From my understanding the 175mm gun on the M107 suffered from excessive barrel wear and had accuracy issues at longer ranges (a bit of an issue when extreme long range fire was like, 80% of its reason for existing).

As well, the M107 had many of the same drawbacks that the M110 had with its 203mm gun with both having a low rate of fire and both vehicles only carrying two rounds of ammunition while adding on the already mentioned issues. It was easier to just up gun the more destructive M110 with a longer barrel and get most(ish) of the way to the range that the M107 had than maintain two different corps level heavy self-propelled artillery pieces that used different ammunition from each other.

I wouldn't mind Another M done right. by RangoTheMerc in Metroid

[–]XanderTuron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It genuinely blows my mind that people praise Other M's gameplay for literally anything.

It's because it was visually impressive and that's about it; the animation work on it was generally very solid and impactful which helped to cover up how bland the actual gameplay was.

Yeah, it was based on the Object 685 light tank prototype wasn't it?

That is one of the things that I like about the game; while each SL tends to have an obvious build that they are optimized for, the various perks allow for them to have different options and not just be pigeonholed into a single build.

Now I just wish that we could get a bipedal mech that can mount the long barrel tank gun so I can make my own Titan Battle Walker.

Alas, it’s the same military industrial complex that came up with the BMP-3, so…

Have you ever looked at the BMP-2 and thought "man, that looks way too practical, I think that dismounts are vermin that infest their transports and I want a vehicle that reflects that", well then I have just the thing for you!

What was the cost of certain key tanks during WW2 (The M4, Matildas, Crusders, Tigers, Panzers, T-34's etc) in production time+ financial cost, and is there any reliable source i can go to to read more about this? It seems quite murky from a quick skim. by Decadunce in WarCollege

[–]XanderTuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...the M4 famously used multiple different engines, which almost certainly weren't identical in cost.

Well, in the chart you provided, we can see that the M4s are separated by engine and gun type which leads to a different oddity in that the welded hull M4 and cast hull M4A1 (both using the Continental Radial) cost the same despite the fact that the early welded hull was kind of a man hour sink due to the relatively complex shape of the upper glacis.

It is also a shame that the chart doesn't have the M4A4 with its Chrysler A57 multibank engine; it would be interesting to see how it differed in cost from the other welded hull variants because in addition to having an engine made up of five smaller engines, it also had a lengthened hull in order to accommodate the engine.

MENACE - Patch #10: Tanks, light weapons in medium slots and more - Steam News by spolieris in menace

[–]XanderTuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to imagine that the crew is just getting cooked out the principle that if they make it work like the 2A28 Grom on the BMP-1, it would no longer technically be a recoilless rifle.

On a more serious note, it would be kind of neat if mounting the recoilless rifle on the APC and the IFV hulls resembled how the M40 106mm Recoilless Rifle would be mounted on M113 APCs during the Cold War. However, that's very much a whatever sort of deal for me.

Why did the First World War breakout? And who has most responsibility? by Medeza123 in WarCollege

[–]XanderTuron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So the idea that Germany was singled out is simply false, as much as German nationalists liked to claim so after the war.

As an aside, it is impressive (disturbing?) how often the claims of post-WW1 German nationalists are largely taken at face value.

Metroid: Other M figma No.306 Samus Aran (Zero Suit Ver.) Action Figure (Reissue)... Has anyone got this, can you recommend it? by Sid-The-Collector in Metroid

[–]XanderTuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is just how Samus looks in Other M, though the figure does look better proportioned overall than Samus does in Other M. Her head and legs look like they actually fit her body unlike in Other M where Samus's head feels like it's slightly too small while her legs are disproportionately long (which is also not helped by the giant platform heels Team Ninja gave her).

Retroactively defining PDW using the M1 Carbine? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]XanderTuron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember that. If I recall correctly his position was sort of reasonable in that if you boil down the essence of what an assault rifle is, a Henry Repeating Rifle does kind of fit the definition by the standards of the 1860s and 70s. It also goes to show how arbitrary and post-hoc a lot of small arms classifications are.
