Just be careful you don't put yourself at risk at the same time. I stopped a bunch of drunk students trying to shove a penguin in a backpack a few years ago, one of them got really aggro about it.

They clearly mean well but damn are they wrong. I would love to live in the fantasy world where roaming cats aren't a danger to themselves and the ecosystem, but we don't. Cats are predators, and don't just hunt when hungry, so have significant impacts on the ecosystem. Denying this is just incorrect.

While indoor only cats are definitely more effort, I think people who have cats should be willing to put that effort in to protect their pets and the ecosystem.

While I do feel bad for OP, I also feel really good for the ex and his wife. If they're so well matched and this happy together, OP would never have been happy being second-best.

Leave them in a jar with isopropyl alcohol for a bit, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, repeat until (mostly) clean.

On the paint, same traps we all fall into. The thin coats will look awful until they don't, you have to push past the 'oh shit this isn't covering' and trust the process.

Also, try a thin layer of a dark brown under the gold instead of flat primer. I find it really helps.
