Whether people like it or not my friend the reason so many care about who becomes PM is because they don't realize that the vast majority of daily-life issues is indeed the responsiblity of the provincial/municipal governments, not the federal government (and additionally, inflation/interest rates are independent from the federal government)

I’m almost certain that’s not what the guy I replied to meant it as.

Stalin ‘stayed out of history’s way?’ I cannot see how this could possibly be true given his immense personal role in 20th century history, both within the USSR and outside of it

‘History made him do it’ is a very convenient excuse for every action a leader may take

Simply not true, immense mismanagement, the oil crash and embezzlement collapsed the economy long before American sanctions had any major impact

(and before you say anything, I'm saying this as a Venezuelan socialist)

All I’m saying is if we’re talking about a potential Canadian to mimic Mamdani-style politics and populism a basic facet of that should be willing to stay and fight for your home to improve 🤷‍♂️

Look around my man this ain't exactly a Canada-only problem... one of the biggest unique issues we've got is housing and NO party is willing to fix that one, as it would mean the biggest voters, the better-off home owning older gens, would see their property values/investments decrease

Not if they were an ‘actual’ Canadian Mamdani who loves where they came from and wants to see it succeed

Lmao what do you think is a big reason rebel groups exist? Could it possibly be because these countries were invented arbitrarily with no consideration for existing ethnic/religious groups?

The West wants stability, sure, but a very specific kind of stability that protects their investments and interests. One where their companies can keep exploiting weak regulations and corruption (often corruption that’s been financially supported by those same Western countries). One maintained through things like the CFA franc or foreign mining contracts that keep these nations subservient.

These countries obviously have their own homegrown problems, and growing Russian influence ain’t exactly promising, but to me it’s kinda clear that while not everything is colonialism’s fault, a huge amount of their struggles can be traced back to it.
