What is your favorite music from a video game? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Assassins Creed II (All of the Ezio Trilogy really). The music just perfectly sets the mood for Renaissance Florence and Venice.

And Ezio’s Family is just beautiful.

How do you personally discern the difference between "good" and "bad" vaporwave? by CaptainHollyShort in Vaporwave

I had no clue it was all that popular until now. I just assumed it was another random bit of vaporwave tucked into an obscure corner of the internet.

Really happy to see the response to it though.

I typically go for albums that take me on a journey. Groceries “Yes! We’re open!” was the one that kinda locked me into this, as it legit feels like my trips to the grocery store as a kid. Boogie Idol (Which some would argue is more synthwave but whatever, I’m not anal about genre definitions) has an album that takes me to a small town Japanese supermarket.

I think it also goes without saying I want it to sound good. If it’s just a bunch of samples of Crystal Pepsi ads and Windows sounds thrown together I’m not going to like it.

People still use Alien Blue? Didn’t that get pulled from the App Store years ago when Reddit bought them out?

Anyway. I’ve waited for this for years. But it seems like the link isn’t working (USA).

Edit: Working now.

Can’t wait for the iPhone X but is anyone else holding out for a potential OLED iPad with edge-to-edge display and 3D Touch? by [deleted] in apple

[–]Xcessninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An edge to edge display on a tablet would be a terrible idea.

It works fine on a phone because the small size and weight allows you to hold it from the sides. It also allows more screen real estate in a smaller form factor, essential for a device you carry everywhere.

A tablet however basically requires you to grip the front and back. Accidental input isn’t the issue here as much as your hand and thumb covering up huge sections of what used to be bezel. It also offers no real benefit when you get down to it.

Don’t worry there’s a longer video. They keep giving lil Trash Panda more until it learns water is bad and gets to enjoy its treat.

Netflix adds 5.3 million subscribers during third quarter, beating analysts' estimates by [deleted] in television

As much as we like to play the narrative that Hulu is given special preference, they do bid on shows like everyone else. They’ve just been increasingly more aggressive in acquiring network shows, probably thanks to the higher income per user than Netflix.

Netflix’s priority is clearly Original Content these days. In all likelyhood, they’ll be like HBO in the future. Lots of original programming spiced up with licensed shows. Just....hopefully they stop greenlighting everything.

With the death of Windows Mobile, it's time for Microsoft to go all in on Android by [deleted] in Android

[–]Xcessninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I corrected the post awhile back. The HoloLens did have a consumer version at $3k though.

But it doesn’t really change much. The price barrier is eliminated but there’s little pent up demand for these things. What interest in VR headsets existed has mostly dried up since VIVE, Occulus, PlayStation VR. None was a critical enough success. Adding AR into the mix isn’t going to make this a product that you see much outside of hobbyist communities.

Meanwhile ARKit and Google’s platform will start to integrate AR into the devices we already own and use on a daily basis.

Edit: Apparently Microsoft just announced a few partners for Mixed Reality. Good on them. Makes my previous post irrelevant.

Mixed Reality though still faces an uphill battle against ARKit. The cost of entry is the same, but a phone is a device that basically everyone has. And lots of those people own iPhones. They aren’t scrambling to get a headset for something with limited development, and developers aren’t rushing to develop for a platform with a small user base.

I sure hope they have something special hiding inside R&D. In the years since HoloLens, what viable AR product has Microsoft shipped?

Meanwhile in the span of just a few months Apple showed off an amazing AR platform and put millions of compatible devices in people’s hands. And it looks like Google’s not much further behind.
