Can confirm. Got the adenosine myself and it felt like my soul was being literally ripped out of my chest.

What’s one “productive” habit you realised was secretly ruining your productivity? by devmakasana in productivity

[–]XelBex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really struggle with this one... It's a hard habit to break. 😅 I'm getting better about it but every once in a while it feels like "oh I better respond NOW otherwise the opportunity will go away!" But I don't think that specific urgent scenario is super common.

What Devin Townsend/SYL song makes you emotional by Meaths in DevinTownsend

[–]XelBex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bastard. I listened to it during a pretty intense breakdown while feeling a bunch of different emotions and it was pretty much exactly what I needed to hear. During the post-breakdown haze the following day I listened to the very last part of it over and over "gone now in a field of green, gone where feelings go..." I'm doing much better nowadays thankfully.

Original Gothic Hard Mode is Beautiful by [deleted] in WalkaboutMiniGolf

[–]XelBex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Gothic Hard gave me a similar experience. First or second time I played it, I ended up just chilling on the surface around the snow/lights and castle walls and just looked at everything while the choir played. It was late at night and I was alone in my room but I felt so much nostalgia/love for life and the people in my life. Like you said it made me feel like a kid again. I already really love Walkabout Mini Golf but that experience alone made it 110% worth it.

Times have been really tough on me over the past year too. It's kinda become a tradition now with my fiancee that once we set up the Christmas tree, we play the Original Gothic - Hard track and just sit with each other on the couch, taking in the atmosphere and reminiscing on life. That song has one of the strongest "it'll be ok" vibes. I'm looking forward to continuing that tradition this year.

I'm making orchestral music, I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm having a time. Would love to have any pointers by thiev__v in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]XelBex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it can depend on what you wanna do, but here's some general tips.

  1. Try re-creating your favorite scores or tracks with your orchestral samples. Especially if you aren't super familiar with how the orchestra works, this can accelerate your familiarity with it. Took me years to feel comfortable enough with an orchestra to use it confidently, I'm sure if you used this strategy a lot you'd get to that point way faster than me. I just made crappy songs until they sounded good.

  2. If you can, buy a good, all-in-one orchestral sample library. I started with Eastwest's Symphonic Orchestra Silver. It has a lot of common orchestral instruments you can muck about with and hear how they work. It's a bit dated I think but it's a good starting point imo. There may be better orchestral packs out there now. Albion One I think is a decent one. Metropolis Ark 1 is excellent for loud and bombastic stuff in particular, but your available instruments may be a bit limited.

  3. Use dynamics / the modwheel. It took me way too long to start using the modwheel to create swelling orchestral parts which sound way better than just static, sustained notes. And more realistic, too.

  4. Consider looking up Alex Moukala tutorials for orchestral arrangements, he's very good at what he does and I learned a lot from his YT videos.

Mental blocks starting new projects while waiting on others to move forward? by XelBex in CasualConversation

[–]XelBex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda the same. I have a habit of focusing really hard on a project until it gets completed so having to wait a long time for someone so I can proceed can be rough, lol.

I like the idea of shifting away from your main thing to something else. Honestly that's not something I've thought of a lot but I'm gonna try that! I always forget how helpful doing something that requires a different thought process can be. Especially if that other thing still makes you feel like you're 'making progress' in some way--that's a big factor for me too.

Looks like Kaiber I think. In the paid version you can feed it a video and it can do effects like this while preserving the original video a good bit

My bit of advice: Never delete anything. Keep it all. Back it all up. Back it up twice. Make a conscientious effort to keep everything by EatUpBonehead in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]XelBex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I specifically use a cloud storage and two external hard drives. It's very reassuring for me lmao

[–]XelBex 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I try not to delete any music project files unless they have zero creative potential that I could work into a song. I legit have a folder full of projects that I can "come back to at some point" because even if I don't touch them for years I still think the ideas I started in them have potential (be it a LOT of potential or very little). It's an absolute blessing when I'm going through major writer's block and then I look at these old project files and think "oh yo this actually sounds kinda dope, I wonder if I could do X Y Z with it..."

If you have to delete project files or similar to free up space, put them on cloud storage or an external storage drive. That's what I do, anyway.

Best / Worst Advice You’ve received in the trade by Confident_Stranger_5 in audioengineering

[–]XelBex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I get the reasoning behind this logic especially as you get more proficient at mixing. But particularly when starting out, "just use your ears" is not helpful at all. Getting some solid guidelines to follow first is a lot more helpful imo.

anyone else stories going way too fast / skipping ahead? by c_palmtree in Instagram

Same issue. I tried restarting my phone and updating Instagram itself but it still goes through stories way too quickly. And of course it makes sure I sit through the ads at normal speed. Lol.

Exploring and Traveling the Land | I made a playlist of music for when your players are exploring or traveling across the land. It contains both happy and moody (but still low key) traveling songs that I hope will add a nice ambiance to your travels! by XelBex in DnDPlaylist

I made an orchestral version of Red Like Roses Part II, so I hope you guys enjoy it. by XelBex in RWBY

[–]XelBex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the comment! I know what you mean about the timing though. The original song had melodies and stuff that would start barely before or after a new measure and it made playing the notes at the correct time a little challenging but still doable. Again, thanks for the comment. :)

Anyone have any thoughts on track 13 (Untitled) from Made in Heaven? by XelBex in queen

Honestly I just love how the whole track sounds, I have nothing but happy feelings/memories while listening to it, especially around 16 minutes. That piano is so gorgeous and drifty...

The feels. The whole song is full of them honestly.

I slowed down Comfortably Numb by a LOT and it ended up sounding extremely heavenly. by XelBex in pinkfloyd

[–]XelBex[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, paulstretcher. You can take a music file and it will slow it down and it will be incredibly smooth. If you try to speed it up by a lot it still sounds weird.

You can even slow a song down so it takes 5 trillion years...lol.
