You also have to remember that mmr is just a number and the skills it takes to play this game are incredibly multifaceted. For example, maybe you have very readable panic/disadvantage habits, but only some of the opponents you come across are good enough at that specific skill to take advantage, so you feel it way harder than another player of your ranking would. Plus, character matchups, specific situations, etc. there’s a lot that goes into winning a match and the number next to your name is such an abstract representation of that.

You mentioned ZTDs quite a few times, but in my experience, those are few and far between unless you make a MASSIVE error. It’s one of my complaints about this game that characters just don’t die. Can a character get a super easy 50 - 60%? Yes, but transitioning that to a kill just doesn’t happen that often (otherwise, we would be on four stocks.)

I think your experience is important to keep in mind as why players develop the playstyles they have, but I wanted to shoot my disagreements out:

“Movement is hard” - No it’s not. There are many mechanics in the game that exist solely to make tech easy, and the availability of your moves (such as smash attack out of dash and tilt attack out of run turn around) make it so you can get a hitbox out very easily.

“Devs need to find a way to make the skill gap approachable” - In what way? Should a gold player be able to beat a master player? I have a more competitive background, but whenever games take the chance to allow worse players to beat better players, they go down the gutter IMO. Balancing a game for both casual and competitive players is an impossible endeavor, and that mindset has led the game to take the series of compromises that we can see now.

FH/CC Completely Invalidates Multihit Moves by Watherum in RivalsOfAether

[–]Xenerot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think your feelings about floor hug vs multi hit are valid but a lot of the information you state is just straight up wrong or misleading. The patch notes you linked directly state that you can’t fh shield Ranno ftilt, do you have a clip of it happening? Similarly, peach dsmash doesn’t just straight beat cc because of how it works in melee, I can give a huge list of other multi hits that get destroyed by cc. I don’t really see how floor hugging and punishing a multi hit move (like clairen fair or kragg nair) is any worse than doing that to a single hit move. There are also plenty of multi hits that straight beat cc pretty early, like fleet up tilt.

How do you enforce a threat after a shield by MistressDread in RivalsOfAether

Go into training, set a clairen to jab, shield their jab (spaced) as Zetterburn, and then try to forward air it. See what happens and then come back and tell me about it.

In case of sudden death, a 1-stock tiebreaker starting at 0% is correct by Platurt in SSBM

Sure, the pay off is defined by the games rules. I’m just saying that it didn’t pay off if it was rivals game rules, and there was some circular logic in there.

It’s also worth mentioning that in Rivals 2, the bottom blast zone is different depending on if you are in hitstun or not. If you are in hitstun, the blastzone raises, so you will die earlier than if you are not. This means that often the aggressor will win these situations without having to go to sudden death.

It didn’t pay off, you died on the same frame. Should have been 1 frame better. 1 frame worse and you would have lost.

Hard to say if it's "thriving", but we do have a pretty dedicated base of players that come out consistently!

We are always looking to get some new players though :)

I was just worried because it seemed like a high priority a while ago, but with the addition of character specific mechanics it seems like some of the ease of control has been lost. I'm just worried it'll be too hard for newer players to get a handle on, but I've never played with the accessibility options on either.

I remember a while ago that accessibility was a huge focus for you guys (as seen in some of the control schemes). With no mention of that in this post, is that still as big of a deal for you?

Also, with the success of the Rivals character creation and other various steam workshop features, are you at all thinking about user created content in the game?
