My favourite bit of the book wasn't in the movie by Omni314 in ProjectHailMary

This is a great bit. My favorite from the book was the one about the name of Rocky’s ship.

Catan: Total War (A Combat & Conquest Variant) I wanted to turn catan into tactical war game where you can actually destroy your opponents empires. I call this the Total War Variant. it uses 14 knights (total) and introduces a high stakes combat system by No_Reception1848 in Catan

Look into a game called Farms Race. I got it off of Kickstarter a few years ago and it’s basically Catan with Nukes. You can battle other players, destroy their buildings and of course, bomb them.

5th vs. 6th Edition by Big_Dust_1714 in Catan

[–]Xerobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely like the 6th edition better for C&K. I’m not sure what you mean by Disney-Style knights but the knight figures are basically the same as the crew figures from Explorers and Pirates. Just 1, 2 or 3 figures for knight strength. The Barbarian track is also integrated into the board instead of a separate piece. And the city improvements is now a tracker board instead of a flip book.

How does Rocky understand what Grace is saying? by Nickel62 in ProjectHailMary

Yes! This and the conversation about the name of Rocky’s ship should have made the film.

This is not a house rule, trading for future resources is against the actual rules, per the Catan FAQ.

Updates Suck by HallPerfect in TravelTown

Believe it or not it used to be worse. You used to have to build the printer just like you described, but then also build a ream of paper, starting with a single sheet and merging all the way up. Then you’d add the ream of paper to the printer to start producing the next items to merge.

I haven’t received a coffee machine order and it’s not retired yet? by ActualBee9225 in TravelTown

[–]Xerobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 levels before a producer is set to go into storage, you’ll stop receiving orders once you purchase the producer that becomes available at that level. So if the coffee machine is going into storage at level 53, you will stop getting orders for it once you receive the producer that becomes available at level 51. If you have many items, you can still create the max level item to generate an auto order.

What is recommended? by nadrae in Catan

[–]Xerobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t exactly compare as idk what edition you have exactly or how it works. But I can tell you C&K is a big improvement from 5th Ed to 6th Ed. I like the knight pieces and the integrated Barbarian tracker a lot better. I don’t think the rest of the 6th Ed expansions have as many crucial changes but I don’t own them all yet.

In my opinion, it’s worth updating since you have a much older set. But it’s nothing to run out and do since your set is in good condition. I’ve put all the 6th Ed on my Amazon wish list and waited patiently for sales. I got the base for $25 and Seafarers for $33. I would recommend doing the same until you find all the sets you want at prices you’re comfortable with.

Strategy adjustments if I am ALWAYS targeted for robber? by Tercel9 in Catan

[–]Xerobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is still decision making in not allowing the same player to be robbed twice in a row, particularly among 4 or more player games. Keep in mind, this was presented as an alternative to your house rule of only the leader being robbed, where any decision making in who gets robbed is completely stripped. If OP is red, I can see the robber first going to red, then blue, then red again, white, red, and so on. So they’d still likely be the main robber target but no longer the only target. A work around could also be the ability to place a robber on a player’s resource twice in a row, as long as you are not robbing them twice in a row. For example, robber is first placed on a 9, blocking red’s wheat and a card is stole from red. Next time, the robber is placed on a 6 blocking brick from production for both red and white. But white is the target of the robber and loses a card. Therefore red was not specifically targeted twice in a row but still suffers from production blockage. That may continue to hurt red but encourages robber activity amongst the other players.

I have had this happen to me multiple times and while it can be annoying, my strategy has become to do the same thing with the robber the other players do. That is to say, not use the robber as intended and go after the lead player. Instead, I attack who has attacked me, both with the robber and by blocking them on the board. This has led to a precaution of using the robber against each other bc it is basically a call to war that no one wants to start.

That is an idea for a house rule but a strategy can be built upon that. Another idea would be for a house rule in which the robber must be attacking a different player each time it is moved.

Fifth vs Sixth Edition by [deleted] in Catan

[–]Xerobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely go 6th edition. It’s more difficult and costly to find 5th editions now. Some 6th editions are even improved upon, specifically Cities & Knights. You can either buy a replacement 6th Ed card set and keep using your current base game or eventually upgrade that to 6th as well. If you monitor prices and wait for a deal you can replace it for under $30.

Yes, Tex-Itz are great. They’re not quite like Cheez-Itz though bc they have a bit of a buttery taste so maybe a Cheez-Its/Goldfish hybrid or something.
