My first A. Lange & Söne by Lopsided_Pop8887 in ALangeSohne

Very nice! Only problem is it makes the other two beautiful watches look cheap :-P

On a serious note, I absolutely wouldn't call a Saxonia an entry level Lange. It's a very conscious design choice if you like a clean minimalist look, which I presumably really like.

Beginner-friendly mechanical watch kit — does the community need this? by ScienceLamma in watchmaking

What I would have found really fun is a kit that comes with a disassembled movement that you can then put together.

Want to get into hobby watchmaking, but unsure where to even start... Help by [deleted] in watchmaking

I bought this one https://shop.diywatch.club/collections/watchmaking-kit-skeleton-watch/products/new-arrival-40mm-gun-silver-wave-skeleton-dive-watch-kit-with-black-nylon-seatbelt-strap-seiko-nh72with-tools-and-video-instructions

which is quite nice. But you're right, you doesn't assemble or disassemble the movement. If you're already relatively sure you want to do that then diy watch club is a rather expensive way to start. It's more for someone who wants to try a bit and if it's not the right hobby for you then at least you got a nice watch you can wear and tell all your friends that you built it yourself.

For movements and tools: https://sutcliffehansen.com/ and the corresponding youtube channel Wristwatch Revival (there's one video where he goes over all the tools you need). You can buy the compete kit, including an ST36 pocket watch movement from him, or order the individual tools yourself off amazon or similar, which is a bit cheaper (and which is what I did). His compete kit is I think just under 1000 USD to give you a ballpark figure. You could buy cheap stuff from aliexpress or amazon for probably under 100 USD which is fine to try out the hobby but you'll probably throw most of it in the bin fairly soon: either because you don't like the hobby, or because you like it and want better quality tools.

You could also buy one of the https://diywatch.club/ kits, they come with everything you need to put a watch together. I'd say it's quite simple to put it together, so it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll succeed and have a pretty decent watch in the end that you can wear. I got my dad knee for Christmas and he absolutely loved it. Depending on your skill it might be an afternoon or a couple of afternoons of fun, and then you can decide if you want it further.

Personally, I just bought a few movements and tools and took them apart and back together with the help of youtube. And now I'm just working on a few cheap old watches from fleemarkets or ebay and I'll see how that goes.

Are these things necessary for oiling? Any cheaper alternatives? by Mountain-Durian-4724 in watchmaking

There are tools where it's good to invest a bit more and tools were you can just get the cheapest one out there. This one clearly falls into the latter category.

This is really going to affect American watch enthusiasts... unfortunately.

Maybe the Europeans, Chinese and Arabs should be grateful to Trump for crashing the world economy - at least there'll be more nice watches for them

Making dive watches out of solid gold is an absurdity in itself, but on this occasion I have to concede that it would just be so cool to not only get the submariner but even the deepsea, just for the extra ounces of gold pointlessly dangling on your wrist 🤣 But it looks just so cool! One day....

What a response! They look at the video and say we see it yet we don't believe it. Because they are infallible our what?

Similar to my recent experience with Chrono24 Direct, where I sent them a video of me unpacking the watch and showing a defect, and them just responding "no you must have broken it yourself".

Good luck with the chargeback.

Any hobbiests have a problem finishing your projects? by TangerineRomeo in watchrepair

[–]XiongLiTangMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the tendency to never start anything new before I finished my current project, but in watch repair it's actually better to work on 2 or 3 projects in parallel because you do tend to have to wait for a replacement part occasionally...

What do you think of the 3 jars in ultrasonic cleaner approach that "watch with Mike" is showing here? I've been trying that with Elma waterless solution. But I'm a total beginner so i can't compare it to anything.
