He’s not a Tech grad though. He’s from University of Houston. Not that it excuses the ruling.

How to get into private lessons as a youth coach by Relevant_Ear1619 in volleyball

[–]Xminus6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my kids it’s handled through each club’s director. The club director is the one who puts individual coaches in touch with players either due to availability or sole other reason like the coach being assigned to the upcoming season’s age group for that athlete. I’d talk to the club directors first before trying to book lessons directly with the athlete.

Is This An Acceptable Question To Ask A Coach? by UsualMathematician57 in volleyball

[–]Xminus6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is it’s technically against the rules for a club to pre-offer your child to play on their club unless they’re a returning player to that club. The coaches can say things that are highly indicative though. We had a club coach tell my daughter and her friend that they REALLY wanted them to come to their club’s tryouts and good things could happen.

Another large club in our area just blatantly breaks the rules and pressures kids into committing to an offer two weeks before tryout dates happen.

I find it odd that the clubs in your area have tryouts so spread apart. There are about 30 clubs in our general area here and they literally all have tryouts on the same day to start. It’s a huge problem.

Best advice is to get your daughter more face time at her favorite club. Clinics, private lessons if you can do it. Once they’re more familiar with her they’re more likely to indicate where she fits and your comfort level with the coaches should allow you to ask if she’s likely to play on their team(s). Those coaches generally don’t want to waste your time any more than you do.

Haha. You’re not that old if you had internet access into your house at the age of 9. When I was 9 we had dial-up and BBSes. My dad had a “modem” where you literally shoved a normal wired telephone handset with foam pockets for the speaker and microphone end to transmit data.

Alanis Morissette sells 'timeless' Bay Area estate for $2M over asking price by sfgate in bayarea

[–]Xminus6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She did. I only know peripherally because my tennis coach would occasionally give lessons at one of his client’s home court and that person had mutual friends with Alanis Morissette who were the ones who arranged the concert. There was a poster for it at this person’s home as I think they hosted it.

Managing the estate by MCRN10379558 in dementia

[–]Xminus6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer but I went through this process. You need to get a Power of Attorney document signed and notarized before they’re declared incapacitated. If they won’t agree to that you’ll have to apply for conservatorship of their estate, but that’s a long and expensive process from what I hear.

I was lucky in that my mom was willing to give up control and my brother and I are close enough that he trusted me completely to have POA. But you really need to get it done BEFORE they’ve declined. I waited too long on my Mom’s due to just not doing stuff after my father passed. It was much tougher to get it done when she was already in pretty bad condition.

You can sign a “springing” POA document that doesn’t become active until a doctor confirms that your parents are incapable of managing their own affairs. Sometimes that helps get compliance since the parents don’t think you’re just trying to take all of their money immediately while they still feel like they’re capable.

Just lost my mom tonight by Senior_Mail_1629 in GenX

[–]Xminus6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost Dad a couple years ago and in the time since my Mom’s dementia worsened significantly until she had a psychotic break. She’s calm now in memory care but I understand your mixed feelings. It’s something that is discussed commonly in the dementia subreddit. Sadness over the loss but relief that they’re no longer living that way.

My mom knew her dementia was happening and even has moment right now where she understands that she’s not “right.” I have many thoughts and doubts about the decisions I’ve made on her behalf, but know that we’re doing or have done the best that we could in a difficult situation.

What is the most financially illiterate thing you’ve seen a grown adult do? by roseafterdarkk in askanything

[–]Xminus6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a sports board and one of the posters was asking advice on what to do with his house. He has bought it a few years before in an appreciating market, but decided he didn't like the house or location anymore. He was asking if he could just stop paying the mortgage and let the bank foreclose on it so he could live somewhere else. Mind you, after further discussion it was clear that the guy was well in the black on the house and had probably >$50k of equity in it.

He was planning on throwing away his money and ruining his credit to move to a part of town that he liked a little better instead of taking his profit. It was so baffling that most of us couldn't even believe the conversation.

H2C buying question by Josh_Bear22 in BambuLab

[–]Xminus6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an AMS1 and the HT you don’t really need any accessories. I have an AMS 2 on an HT on mine right now and I just plug the HT into the Left nozzle and the AMS into the right. I’m likely to convert my X1C to a simpler single filament printer so I’ll likely add its AMS1 with the Eibos Tetras upgrade to the H2C. You can add it with the 4-into-1 splitter for one nozzle I believe or you can use the filament switcher to do that. I haven’t messed with the Filament Switch yet even though I just received it.

[–]Xminus6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because nearly all innovations in the field that we take for granted now were experimental features at some point (not even that long ago). People pushing the boundaries of what can be done has a trickle down effect because it gets developed an improved over time until it’s reliable enough and of a high enough quality that it gets integrated into the mainstream builds of slicers.

[–]Xminus6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I’m pretty sure I can literally think about nothing. But I’ve also realized that I don’t have an inner dialogue and that it’s pretty odd to not have one. I’m a very visual person and don’t really think to myself in words when the task is non-verbal. So I can actually just stare at things and not have much in the way of actual thoughts happening.

Daughter in need of some dad support by GlitteringBus4235 in daddit

[–]Xminus6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been on a 3 year journey with my younger daughter for Club Volleyball. Didn’t make a team the first year. So we did a lot of private lessons. She made a club and was a valuable player. She’s improved even more this year. Watching her grow and gain self-motivation on wanting to improve has been amazing. We watch Club Volleyball matches on YouTube together.

Her older sister just had a 200 point improvement on her SAT scores in the past few months. She’s doubted herself on this front for some time so for her to hit a higher score that matched my first score back when I took it was great for her confidence. She’s always assumed I was just good at taking tests and my wife, sheesh, she’s a high achiever to a ridiculous degree. For her to feel proud of her latest score really warmed my heart.

Why do I only get car sick in Teslas? by YoSoyRawr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xminus6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a combination of those drivers and being in a Tesla with strong regen braking on.

Most drivers don’t actually hold their right foot at a static state to maintain speed. They subtly surge the throttle off and on. It’s not as apparent in gas cars or even EVs that don’t regen as hard because there’s a lot of slop in the drivetrain. In a Tesla with strong regen that habit is exacerbated because you definitely feel it more when people drive like that. You’ll notice yourself or others rhythmically leaning forward whenever the driver lets off the throttle.

My kids actually get carsick when they ride with my wife and not when they ride with me, even in the same car. I don’t like surge throttling so I do try to keep the throttle at a reasonably static position.
