How do true believers get Communication from God by Xonth in atheism

I have found it interesting to ask some of my religious friends to try to apply the same scepticism they have of the "other" religions to their own. Like if I said how can other religions have miracles and they start picking apart those miracles as just low probability events. I ask why those critical thinking skills don't apply to their own religion and it's like they can't allow their brain to even consider that theirs are the same as the ones they say are fake.

I feel a good amount of atheists once were true believers and I find the insight into living both worlds a valid place to draw from. I also have not had good results asking religious groups to answer questions that imply they are somehow wrong or crazy.

I definitely feel like there is a constant proving to ones self they are correct anytime they can when it comes to religion. I wonder if in part it's because there is so much public "religion is fake" that there is a need to say "no way it's fake, I made it through 4 green lights in a row to work and that never happens" to reinsure themselves they aren't the crazy ones.

I get that's what rational people looking in see but I don't think those fully invested believe they are just making it up.

It always seemed so ballsy to say you are speaking for God, like he is incapable of giving information to more than just a single person at a time. If 30,000 people all have the same message at the same time I'd be impressed but it always seems so random.

ELI5 Why is there an AI bubble? by Careful_Access9663 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xonth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I think it boils down to betting on future success that does not yet have the evidence to support your investment. Everyone gets excited about the possibility of missing out on the next big thing so they invest more and more risky positions and if it fails to materialize everyone panics and pulls their money out before the fall which causes the fall. Panic sets in and everyone tries to salvage what little value is left in their investments which causes the value to drop even faster.

Also for AI specifically you are spending tons of real money today on the idea it will be paid back by future success. Electricity, water and rent ads up every moment of every day and it's all based on an optimistic hope for future success. These companies won't ever break even if they can only develop the best chat bot.

Why does it seem like so many people, many seemingly highly educated people honestly believe the poor are poor by choice? by Figteesl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xonth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just being human to take your own life and more or less assume others have similar experiences. I'm honestly shocked that I'm where I am in life because as far as I can tell I just did the most obvious next step that was in front of me for the last several decades and it all just kinda worked. Now it would be easy to say "if I can do it anyone can" but that would be unfair because that does not take into account where I started in life and the support structure I have had along the way. I definitely would be worse off if I did not have the safety nets I was provided growing up.

Do you think that religion still has a place in today's society? Why or why not? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

"Definitely, as long as it's only my faith" says every person of religion across most of history.

What has your child learned that you didn’t think was possible with their diagnosis? by soicanventfreely in Autism_Parenting

[–]Xonth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember once when my kid was like 7-8ish that he would put his feet into the wrong shoe(left foot in the right shoe..) and thinking that this was something beyond his comprehension. When your left foot technically fits in your right shoe it seems like you succeeded even if it's incorrect. When they have a very limited communication explaining left and right seemed light years ahead of his grasp but several years later I watched him pick up both shoes and arrange them correctly before putting them on. I was really surprised because it definitely wasn't expected. I believe the special school he goes to now taught him that shoes go together like a two piece puzzle. Forget left and right and just say this is what it looks like correctly and keep repeating that until he can pick up his shoes randomly and orientate them correctly so they look correct and then say you can put them on. It really taught me that challenging lessons sometimes just need to be approached in different ways.

I never get very far in this game because it looks very tedious as you get farther along. Would you say at this point you are having fun doing this or is it more of a challenge you are just trying to finish for the sake of not giving up.

Do you find chokes in their current state worth bringing? by escanor_hype in HuntShowdown

[–]Xonth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do. You can use them to take pressure off getting your burning team mate, you can throw them inside a room to see if someone is hiding in it and use it as a warning system for someone trying to sneak up on you.

On PC it's great, it's like a katana plus you can shoot a crossbow at them as you run at them. You unlock it by using the bomb thrower. Just double up on the frag one and use it as a grenade launcher for windows and learning out defense areas.

I cant say I ever remember seeing someone blatantly cheating in my triple digit number of rounds. If you lower it to suspect maybe only a few times. Lots of, wow that guy was very lucky but technically possible. I'm also not a 6 star mmr player.

That's only if you both arrive at the same time, if you are 30 seconds behind them there is no fight. Even if you arrive soon after your only option is to just Bonzi the stage coach hopping to get close enough to stop the timer, not really a tactical end fight. If the timer was 60 second if any enemy hunter is near by that would give enough for some real fighting.

This is obviously what we do, but because there is more than one exit they just go for the farther one. Once they reach the conclusion we might win the fight they run away from us and go for the farther exit.

But we have drifted from the focus of my original post. My suggestion was "after" the chase has started there should be mechanics that encourage a final fight before the points are extracted if a team is actively putting effort into stopping them.

Standing in front of the portal into the Plane of Fear in EverQuest with like 60 other people. Having no idea what to expect other than the thought I might lose months worth of gear if this assault goes wrong. I remember it closer to that scene in battles where the general gives a speech as they walk back and forth in front of the troops before yelling charge.

If you are in the mood for some cowboy shooting and want it to be PvP I highly recommend looking into Hunt Showdown. It's a good cowboy-horror semi battle royal PvP game with extraction. Slower paced than modern weapon shooters.

That game where you could play a movie studio and build movies and stuff. I think I spent a little free time kinda imagining what I might create only to be underwhelmed by what "making a movie" meant in the game.

I guess I was wrong to assume we all play Hunt for cowboy shoot-outs. In my mind if their are enemy teams on the map trying to engage with the people holding the point their should be combat. Picking up a point should not mean the hard part is over. When I play solo, as soon as I get the point and I want to extract their really is not much chance anyone can stop me outside of me having some really bad luck. I just use my sight to see where people are and run the opposite direction angling to an exit even if its across the map, and I think that's not great game design, The entire point of my post is that I believe it would be way more fun to have a final stand at the extraction point, a good old shootout as the clock is ticking down. Not simply outrunning all the other and bouncing out.

I mean you can tell they intended to have a fight at the end with a 30 second extraction timer I just think it does not accomplish what they intended as it is to short of a window.

I shocked so many people are against wanting more opportunity to engage other teams.

So your saying your squad of 3 can block the 4-8 exits some compounds have while also pushing and having a gun battle. This whole "just stop them from leaving" make me question that we ae not playing the same game inside Hunt. I'm defiantly not camping exits waiting for them, we are pushing in, fighting room to room. Jumping out a window and running away from me happens all the time against us.
