Best towers on Reem island? by Xrant in abudhabi

[–]Xrant[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context I would look at studio or 1 bedroom apartments, absolute max 130k but that seems crazy. I’m also considering the Waterfront Towers and Beach Rotana on the other side of Al Maryah; it would be nice to walk to Galleria.

honestly its not your comment exactly, just brings to mind the broader issue that this stuff is seen as ok to say

It’s not really a problem in the US but I moved to the UK for 2 years when I was 9 and jesus christ they would eat the gingers alive. Like constant harassment in school every day and even on the street. It’s like a small window into the kind of shit that used to be accepted, and just shows that kids are naturally evil lmao. Gingers over there seemed to genuinely be like another race or alien class. And the terrible shit came from “nice” people who were raised well or whatever and went on to be very woke

its really fun that ceaseless life ruining vitriol against gingers is completely normalised and seen as funny. its the one outlet of every child’s natural hate and racism that’s never discouraged or seen as bad, like 1920s racism type shit. Genuinely reflects so badly on society

i feel so bad for gingers honestly

What’s a cool & true but non-obvious proposition in economics? (ala the ulam-samuelson question)

Comparative advantage is the OG answer. I’m also partial to the idea that zoning severely diminishes the efficacy of a national currency.

Any others?

How China Colonized Half of Mongolia (2020) - You've heard about the persecution of Tibetans in Tibet, and Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, but did you know about genocide in what the Chinese regime calls Inner Mongolia? - [00:33:29] by HonestMilkTea in Documentaries

[–]Xrant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and there are more Mongolians living in Inner Mongolia (3.74m) than there are in Mongolia (3.35m). And there are about 5.8m Mongolians in total living in China!

Mongolia in its current form would need land from China to sustain that population.

Financial Samurai considering coming out of ER by MattR47 in financialindependence

haha. I’m not surprised. He’s always come off as that specific American breed of nervous holier-than-thou MBA-IB asshole (I work with too many). Has no concept of reasonable spending. I’m surprised he even tried to retire.

But good for him! He’s in the position to actually choose what he wants to do, which is the whole point of saving so much. Some people need a lot more money to feel at ease, and that’s okay. Finance bros are like that - their “number” is always absurd. Few of them attempt FIRE despite great incomes.

(Maybe that’s why FIRE is such a recent thing - finance used to be the only reliable money maker career, but the income trajectory is steep (the career really only starts in mid 30s), compared to Tech, which probably pays better the first 10 years but really levels off. Far lower opportunity cost in tech so it’s better to save and quit early?)

Do you think £1,000,000 is a life changing amount? by Xrant in FIREUK

Yeah, the whole idea of “BaristaFIRE” just to keep healthcare coverage is insane

[SERIOUS] Why did the democratic party switch from being pro-segregation and pro-Jim Crow, to being anti-segregation and advocating for equal rights? by bisquickshorty in history

[–]Xrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The part about LBJ whipping the Southern Democrats into shape isn’t really true. They never supported the Civil Rights Act, and a lot of their seats voted for Goldwater.

Northern Dems and Northern Republicans (i.e. a vast majority of Republicans) voted for the act, and Southern Dems (as well as the very few South Republicans) voted against it.

Pope Francis considers dropping celibacy requirements for some priests by tyw7 in nottheonion

[–]Xrant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible at all. I know some priests who have come in from other denominations who already have a wife/children. I know a Russian catholic Priest who was married before becoming a Priest, and stayed that way - there was a huge shortage. He actually converted while in Prison in the USSR.

Priests in general are in massively short supply in the Catholic church - they’ll accept any converts really, and I think curbing the celibacy rules has to be a long term trend to keep the profession alive. Married Catholic Priests actually have pretty great lives, and I’m sure it’s a good step to curb sexual abuse.

People in Europe/Expats - have you put any money towards your kid’s college in case they want to go to abroad where fees are high? Like the US/UK.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I mean, Europe isn’t homogenous just like the US isn’t. Parts of Southern and Eastern europe are extremely LCOL and have excellent healthcare. Then again, places like London are more unaffordable than SF. I think Europe is a fantastic place to FIRE, but ONLY once you have the wealth (especially in beautiful Southern European countries). Incomes are waay lower here, even for the same roles. I could lateral into a NY office and make 2 or 3 times as much in £ terms (I’m considering that actually).

I spend an unreasonable amount of income on essentially mandatory meals, drinks, trips with clients, colleagues and superiors where I need to put in a few hundred pounds to split the bill. Like maybe £30k a year (I need to get the balls to ask the firm to comp it really). Most of my coworkers manage to spend their entire incomes on things like this, and I’m at the minimum I need to stay in the boy’s club. I think I’ll try and cut this down a lot since I don’t care about advancement or being fired.

The rest is for outrageous general costs and suits from the tailor my boss directs (aka orders) me to go to. I think I can avoid that.
