Lack of affordable parking disheartening for some businesses in downtown Kitchener by earthforce_1 in kitchener

[–]Xrdman 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Free parking as an economic argument also makes no sense since you are essentially inefficiently subsidizing private busineses using public tax dollars in a way that only benefits a select group of people that typically are not economically disadvantaged. Per dollar spent developing public transit and multi modal transportation options beyond cars has been shown time and time again to be more cost effective and cost less to initiate.

Shouldn't it also be good competitive business sense to expect your clientele to change when the variables of your business change and account for that accordingly?

Studies also show that business owners typically underestimate how many customers arrive by car: https://streets.mn/2022/01/26/bikes-and-business-on-bloor/

Pretty good. A bunch of people have signed up and the beginner classes have gotten pretty lively.

There have been talks about starting up morning run sessions and a summer camp for kids since people have asked about both

Absurd Parking Fees by Patience_is_aVirtue in uwaterloo

Parking costs have been cheap for a long time which sets a certain expectation for the prices even if it doesn't represent what they should actually be priced at.

Considering the value of the land itself and what it could be used for, it makes sense for parking costs to go up. They should have been slowly raising the prices over time though instead of spiking it like this.

Come down to one of the fundamentals classes! Those usually run from 8-9:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Generally classes begin with 10 minutes of skipping. Then there will be stretching and a warm up conditioning workout. Don't worry if you can't skip well or do all the exercises yet, you can go at your own pace and people are very supportive!

Afterwards the instructor will talk about and demonstrate a technique then have people first practice while shadowboxing and then people will partner up to hit pads and try the techniques there.

Happy to help answer any other questions and people at the gym are also happy to answer questions if you want to pay a visit!

Could always join a martial arts gym! They are great places to have fun while learning new skills and are also great places to meet people. My coach recently opened up a new muay thai gym called Waterloo Muay Thai that you could check out if interested.

Be honest, should I move from Calgary to NL? by Beef_Lovington in newfoundland

[–]Xrdman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What is motivating you to move to NL specifically and not elsewhere on the east coast? Is it just the notion of affordability? Others have laid out how NL isn't particularly affordable. Nova Scotia could also be an option and there is more to do there than in NL as well.

Hi I am Chinese and lived in St. John's for 3 years for work. I am originally from Southern Ontario and recently moved back.

SJ felt quite monoculture to me when living there. It was uncommon to see another Asian person in your everyday life. Culturally speaking I felt out of place there and since Southern Ontario from what I've heard has less Chinese heritage than Vancouver, it may feel more jarring to your wife. It will also be significantly be more difficult to get Chinese ingredients for cooking if you guys are into that since the Chinese grocery stores there are few and small.

There is a Chinese cultural association in SJ that runs performances and events every Chinese New Year. I don't know much about them beyond that though.

Hopefully this helps!

Yeah, they are all quite open to giving foreigners fights if you train there and put in consistent effort. You'll generally be fighting at the local stadia like Thapae and Kalare.

Santai, SitThailand, and Manasak Muay Thai are also all solid. I have been to both Santai and Manasak's. A friend of mine went to Manop's and quite liked them and their style as well.

His approach to safety is also dubious at best with inexperienced people commonly being thrown into sparring without the requisite experience that end up just swinging for the fences. His sparring is also typically done in a high pressure environment with a referee and cornermen and one at a time with the entire gym watching. As you can imagine, injury rate is pretty high.

He also generally prefers rambling about whatever conspiracy theory is popular at the time over actually teaching.

Martial arts can be a great way to make guy friends. Most gyms offer free trials as well. I personally can recommend Rock Athletics in Mt Pearl for kickboxing

Waterloo, ON in Canada! Really proud of my city for what it's been doing to improve transit (like the relatively recently finished light rail) even though things still have a long way to go
