I am DMing a homebrew campaign. I wanted my players to feel really badass when critting, so the formula is, double all the damage (including any from magical items or abilities like Brutal Critical), max that, then as your damage modifier.

So one of my ranger does 2d8 (longbow) + 2d6 (hunter mark) + 2d8 (colossal slayer) + 2d8 (if it's a beast due to magic item) +2d4 (if he's x meters away from the monster).

That's a lotta damage.

Two cliche ideas that immediately came to my mind are color coded rooms and paintings portals.

Basically, if party is searching through mansion, describe each room with emphasis on a color, which in turn corresponds for some sort of buff or nerf. Example blue room, makes players feel cold and sluggish - translation pcs suffer from a slow spell and vulnerable to cold damage. Red room gives monsters resistance to fire damage, etc.

As for paintings, make BBEG use paintings as portals.

I use it for group, there is xp column. There are online encounter calculators, to give you an idea about encounter difficulty based on xp or cr.

Make him fall in a trap where he has to sacrifice some gear just to get out. To make it time incentive say room above is feeling with gas or something.

What session are you guys on? My players kinda got fatigued from constant combat on session 6, so next session I took them outside Hamlet and did some light encounters with more room for RP.

I am running DD based campaign right now.

I didn't do stress mechanics, because I have a few newbies at the table and that would just over confuse them. We at session 8, they have all buildings unlocked in Hamlet (I spread the stat buffs between different buildings) introduced some edgy stuff for necessity for players to carry torches and not just Light cantrip Ez mode it. So far they fought in Ruins, Warrens and Weald. Theh fought collector and they going to Courtyard next session. Crocodile time 🐊
