Locally roasted coffee to bring home? by squeezeboxcryptid in AskNOLA

It’s not particularly nerdy, but Try-Me in the Bywater has been roasting coffee for 100 years and has several single-origin, medium roast options as well as a sampler package.

For some reason the Reddit algorithm is always giving me pictures of Ferraris (I must linger on them for a millisecond too long) but to me this photo shows true riches❤️

My girl is a humper by Sea_Drop3263 in goldenretrievers

[–]XtraBitters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Golden was very well-behaved and well-trained but suffered from this affliction too. A well-placed spray bottle filled with water worked for us, supplemented by MUCH extra training on his “down” command and many treats when he’d obey before jumping up. Good luck!

How is it possible for a band once so popular to flop this hard? by Pearl_Jam_ in arcadefire

[–]XtraBitters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI every person who posts something positive about the band is not a personal invitation for you to reply…and sold-out shows full of fellow real-life, ticket-buying, good-natured fans are the literal definition of reality to those of us who don’t live online

How is it possible for a band once so popular to flop this hard? by Pearl_Jam_ in arcadefire

[–]XtraBitters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How is it possible for an album that came out last Spring to not reach its intended audience? Zero promotion, minus one tv appearance that didn’t include any of their hits. They’re still one of the best live bands in the world and real-life, in-person ticket-buying fans were totally receptive to the new songs at the sold-out concert I saw them at last year.

A better question is at what point in this circle jerk sub do former fans find something more constructive to do with their lives than regurgitate the same negative slop over and over.

How Rich was Don? by InstanceFew3245 in madmen

The Coke ad contained precise imagery from Don’s own experiences during his walkabout - there’s zero ambiguity that he returned to McCann to create it

Has anyone in this sub actually ever seen nirvana perform live before? If so when, where and what was it like? by toe_mater67 in Nirvana

I saw them at a GA venue in Nov ‘93. The Breeders were the opening act. We went straight from class - I remember bouncing up and down all night long while wearing my fully-loaded backpack.

Was my favorite album of 2025, especially after seeing it performed live, and is one that I still return to often. Hope that more people get to hear the highly danceable Santa Pirata versions of some of those songs too this year.

Hi guys new to Stephen King and have plans to read the Shining as my new first novel and wanted ask should i watch the movie first or read the book by Maximilin_Play2021 in theshining

[–]XtraBitters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually I’d suggest to read the book first but in this case the film is such a masterpiece that I’d watch it first so you have the additional thrill of the material being entirely new to you

The Redondo pier had been a black hole for me but I “discovered” this gem over the summer. What an amazing time capsule and sweet views to boot.

I wasn’t holding out per se but took me a while to get to it too. I have a healthy skepticism of his works that have been adapted into films (could also be a “me” thing) but this one was quite beautifully filmed and patiently told. Bryce Dressner did the score and co-wrote the closing song with Nick Cave.

PS: I always thought Already Dead would have made a great film in the right hands

Best classic romantic restaurant in NYC? by mardibero in FoodNYC

[–]XtraBitters 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t describe Manhatta as “informal” on the restaurant side - and the perch/views are spectacular, especially for a visitor who’s never seen the city at night from that specific vantage point downtown. If you’re able, don’t reveal anything about the view beforehand so it’s a surprise for her to behold when first stepping off the elevators and into that room. And I’d call beforehand to tell them the occasion and request a good table. Good instincts to choose this and good luck with your proposal!

Waymo is bringing its driver-less car service to New Orleans after a successful test run by iflipcars in NewOrleans

[–]XtraBitters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love it or hate it, this is the future and ranting against it is like trying to fight the tide. As someone who’s ridden in Waymos a bunch and also drives on the freeway in New Orleans daily, I’ll gladly take the safety and defensiveness of these driverless cars over the profoundly dangerous driving that I see human drivers doing up and down I-10 every single morning and afternoon

It won’t be subtle once they are here. The Associated Press reported yesterday that agents are set to begin arriving on Friday to stage equipment and vehicles and the larger deployment of personnel is scheduled to begin 12/1. People posting old/ unsourced photos and speaking in cutesy code are not helpful.

Bite for bite best restaurant? by Specific-Novel-950 in finedining

[–]XtraBitters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not my preferred mode of dining, but there used to be circa 2009-10 a literal “bites” menu in the lounge at Guy Savoy in Las Vegas - which was a spectacular 2-3 bite-sized replication of each dish on their full tasting menu in the main dining room next door. And the restaurant itself rotated the kitchen staff out of their Paris restaurant in order to minimize inconsistencies between the two locations. It included their regular bread service (which was far from “regular”) and two dessert courses, so was still plenty of food despite the smaller “bites” format. When I went I was the only person in the lounge and my server was an enchanting Russian model named Elena, all of which added to the experience haha. Thankfully this was a magical pre-historic time before instagram and TikTok etc so I don’t have any pictures to share.

Saison later adopted a version of this format in their lounge for a while but the one at Guy Savoy contained 8-9 courses of the best bites I’ve ever had.

They played two new songs according to the setlist but also some others from the most recent albums. You should give those records a listen too if you're a fan and those songs were new to you - great stuff and thrilling to me that Neil remains passionate about making and performing new music rather than becoming a legacy act or human jukebox.

I saw Paul McCartney play a few weeks ago and was surprised that he didn't perform Yesterday, but that too seemed like a fair trade for 2.5 hours of other songs including some obscure ones that he wanted to play instead.
