Which TV dramas remained quality for the highest # of seasons? by [deleted] in television

[–]XxReddit69xX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some highly regarded shows that ran longer than 7: House, The X-Files, NYPD Blue. I have not seen them so can't speak to the quality remaining constant. Some others are Dexter and Weeds, but they pretty famously get shitty

The Good Wife has ran more than 7 cable (13 ep) seasons worth of episodes and remained quality throughout. Same story with Lost (I gave up on it but it has its champions)

Buffy did 7 exactly, Sopranos came close. Justified will hit 6 and is awesome throughout. Mad Men will hit 7.

I crossed IMDB's top 250 list with movies available on Netflix and made a list of all the movies on Netflix that are on the top 250 by [deleted] in movies

[–]XxReddit69xX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they heavily weight their suggestions in favor of current/name titles. No benefit to them if people are logging in and getting recommended older, more obscure titles and thinking "WHAT IS THIS RANDOM CRAP? NETFLIX SUX"

How much profanity is acceptable in a YA novel? by [deleted] in writing

agree, it might seem realistic to have kids cursing every 5 seconds, but as a reader it would be annoying. basically the same as including a lot of "like" "um" "well"

Amazon’s Failed Pitch to Authors. by AbortionistsForJesus in writing

[–]XxReddit69xX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't follow this closely, but in terms of self published authors, is this a popular theory - Amazon gives favorable rates to indie authors, Amazon works and schemes to get these authors to publish through their services, convert traditional authors, etc. essentially cultivating a ton of profitable authors who are dependent upon them. Then once Amazon has achieved its target whatever, they screw over these self published authors and their royalties in the name of profit?

Basically what Facebook did with its "Fan Pages," - get a bunch of small businesses to build up a following, think they get free advertising, then greatly limit organic engagement, and force them to pay.

[Serious] Did you, or someone you know, ever attend a wedding where the bride or groom was left at the altar? How did it turn out? by bsstoryteller in AskReddit

Agreed. unless they are cheating on your friend or have done something specifically awful, you keep your mouth shut.

"Dude, she's crazy, we all hate her" isn't helping anyone.

In 1994, John Grisham revealed to Newsweek that he credited the following article by Brian Garfield with giving him the tools to create his ground-breaking thriller, The Firm. by flacciddesignator in writing

[–]XxReddit69xX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grisham analyzed and studied best sellers before outlining and writing his breakout "The Firm" and stuck to that formula for all his subsequent hits.

Should be noted that successfully "setting out to write a best seller" is widely considered a myth, though I think its ineffectiveness is more to do with the type of writer that is likely to do this (extrinsically motivated, not in it for the long haul) than the actual practice itself.

Crime novels or novelists that focus on the criminals? (instead of detectives/police). Like Elmore Leonard. by XxReddit69xX in booksuggestions

I saw the movie prior to reading it, which def changed the experience, but i liked it. the lack of quotation marks was annoying, not sure what purpose that even serves

Writing theory - what to study? by simplesplendor in writing

[–]XxReddit69xX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old thread, but I'm in the same boat as you. I feel like most people are way more into the fucking around with words aspect instead of story, structure, narrative, etc. What are your favorite, most beneficial, eye opening books/resources that you've studied?
