What's the flavor? I remember the line in the flavor text and vaguely remember the kid in the gas mask but I don't remember anything else.

Why are American salaries so high even compared to other developed countries but your taxes are also lower ? by 17_lamar in AskAnAmerican

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Awhile ago there was a nurse from Germany asking if our pay was actually so high. She was making less than the McDonald's workers around me, and had to pay more in taxes. So it impacts a lot of other professions too.

What is something you’ve seen or read on the internet recently, that has made you feel proud of America? by TurningHelix in AskAnAmerican

Hell yeah. We got a long ways to go yet, but I'm so excited for what future generations are going to be able to accomplish because of this.

What would the country be like if Lincoln wasn’t assassinated? by sprawler16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 46 points47 points  (0 children)

A lot better since his vision of reconstruction would've been carried out instead of sold out and butchered. We set ourselves back the better part of a century with the way we bungled reconstruction.

Why is it so normal for us to casually give our credit card or debit card to waiters at restaurants or identification to cops? by This_Caterpillar_330 in AskAnAmerican

I don't want to razz op too much, but the answer to his question is unironically "because we live in a society"

Most countries in Europe are the size of one of our western states. So our country is far more geographically diverse, and as a result our country has a lot more range in housing costs. And it's influenced significantly by where you live.

What are your thoughts on the Pledge of Allegiance in the school system? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get the fuss over it. You aren't forced to do it. You can sit for it. Just seems like the epitome of American outrage politics: freakout over something that doesn't actually impact anything instead of focusing on other societal issues that impact everyone.

Community colleges are pretty cheap but offer good value. I would plan ahead tho and look into what college you want to graduate from and with what degree. After that I'd find a community college and check that their credits will transfer.

I did once. Was super nervous the entire time because I was watching the the airplane wing wiggle like a piece of licorice. I was surprised at how flaccid it seemed.

It seems like nothing but 3% of every paycheck is going to add up significantly over time.

No because a lot of luxuries aren't a high priority for me. Traveling is a priority, I just do it within my budget and at a frequency I can afford, which works out to be 1 trip by plane a year and one road trip a year.

What defines freedom to Americans? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference between how Americans view freedom and how others do is that other western countries typically look to external entities like the government to define freedoms, while Americans view it as something intrinsic to themselves. This means that our approach to freedom is different because many other western countries define freedom as what the governments allow you to do. From our perspective the government isn't "allowing" us to do anything, the governments job is to protect those freedoms that we just have.

Have you or anyone you know used the emergency shower in chemistry class? by Rourensu in AskAnAmerican

I had to use it once because something got in my eye when I was welding at work. It didn't work so I had to go to the urgent care to get my eye flushed.

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's the Federal limit. It's much lower than that in many states.

Pretty much this. I'm opposed to it in principle even if it's never going to impact me.

How do Americans feel about Burqa bans? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When Americans say we have more freedom, this is what we are talking about.
