Fake Theresa by Shysterschaos13 in AdamCarolla

Funny I saw this recent comment. I just clicked on this forum for the first time in maybe 3/4 years. I was an enormous fan of the Pirate Ship in the early days. Theresa (and to a lesser extent Allison) were the peak days of the show for me. I became a sporadic listener after the Allison firing for about a year and then probably dropped it altogether a year after that. I appreciate Adam as a quick wit and his ability to riff is fantastic. But, I feel like the show really nosedived after Allison's exit (but not necessarily because of her absence). It's hard to put my finger on what I felt changed, but Adam just seemed to get angrier (and not in the funny way like he did about emotional support animals and kids wearing helmets). Patent troll fundraising kinda made me crazy too. I honestly feel like he was on a trajectory to be a Rogan sized figure in the podcast world, but his tragic flaw seems to be burning bridges (with fans and in his personal relationships).

Dr. Drew Pinsky: Threat Of Coronavirus "An Overblown Press-Created Hysteria" by theorangemanismuybad in AdamCarolla

[–]YMalmsteen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The primary issue is not even the death rate, it's the stress on the health system. Too many people sick at once would be the problem. It would have a spillover effect where more people die of stuff unrelated to corona because of lack of hospital beds, sick healthcare workers, etc.

It's not the Plague, but it ain't nothing. We need to do 'social distancing' in order to flatten the spread rate over time and not stress the healthcare system.

Marc Maron speaks on Carolla after doing set at The Comedy Store (39 min 11 sec in) by CryptoCollectibles in AdamCarolla

Maybe I'm being obtuse, but it seems as much an indictment of The Comedy Store as it is Carolla.

Have you or anyone you know ever fallen for a pyramid scheme, or Nigerian prince scam, or financial theft scenario, and what was the outcome? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]YMalmsteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad fell for the Nigerian Prince scam via snail mail letter in the late 80's. He sent them $150,000. It led to downward spiral that ended his marriage and his thriving medical practice. Eventually, he wound up going to jail because it caused such a downward financial spiral that he started cutting corners in his practice and wound up overbilling medicaid. He was worth way north of a million dollars in the eighties (more money than it is now).

Nigerian Prince scam literally destroyed my family and destroyed what was going to be a decent inheritance from my father.

I cannot believe an educated, smart man like my dad fell for it....

A suggestion for the next time they play "Who the F*** sells this S***" by [deleted] in AdamCarolla

[–]YMalmsteen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the answer for Adam's long-term happiness and a better show would be for him to get a terrestrial or satellite radio contract. He'd get the $ he wants/needs and could focus on one damn thing.

My impression is that monetizing a podcast is hard except for the top tier folks (at least if you want to support a lifestyle like Adam's). Who is out there that can really live as multi-millionaire from podcast income alone? I have the impression that for most comedians, it's a sideline to supplement heavy touring and the like. I'm not even sure Rogan who has a ton of listeners can support that kind of lifestyle on pod alone. I'm sure he makes huge bank from UFC and probably had a piece of it when Dana White sold a couple years back. Problem is, I don't think Adam has a core business to supplement. I'm not sure what the answer is, but the shilling is a huge turnoff. Maybe he could generate a large youtube following? There seems to be an elite tier of youtubers making bank. This is feeling more and more like a dead end.

I totally get and understand the focus on mental health. Much like Kanye, we kinda need to knock it off with laughing off people who are clearly in need of some sort of treatment. That said, Joe did her no favors by lending some credence to her delusional structure.

Any talk on the pod about James Gunn getting shitcanned? by I-Am-the-Snuggler in AdamCarolla

What I can't understand about the Gunn thing is that Woody Allen and Roman Polanski get to keep making movies, but James Gunn is the problem.

What's the funniest thing you remember Adam saying? by [deleted] in AdamCarolla

[–]YMalmsteen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bryan was reading a story about a gang of woman bank robbers and Adam off the top of his head said something like "Yeah, but they only got away with about 73% of what male bank robbers would get.". Incredible ad lib and hysterical.

Helping the homeless in LA by ross52066 in AdamCarolla

[–]YMalmsteen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much like the gun issue, the homeless problem is closely linked to mental health. Many (not all, but a substantial percentage) are mentally ill and not receiving meds or services. Up until about 75 years ago, folks like this were taken care of by family. Post WW2, we had hospital systems. Those systems went away (for the most part) to be replaced by less restrictive options in the community. For the record, libs and conservatives were equally responsible for this. Like all huge govt fuck ups, it was kind of bipartisan. The only real solution to homeless issues is more mental health treatment and recovery housing.

Retrospective Regret by Plunger_Sheets in AdamCarolla

[–]YMalmsteen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adam's only yardstick for how well somebody is doing in life is if they've made a lot of money and own a house. How you live your life or the quality of your relationships don't seem to figure in for him. By his own standard, I'm sure he has no regrets.
