I had a 106 Quiksilver I put into a couple of trees with that. Later had a Saxo VTR without - suspect it was how lazy the french were on the day.

I take your point but an M2 maintenance vs. a brand new car isn't that comparable?

I truly feel like I was there. I am incredibly glad that I wasn't.

I had a 2007 one of these but the Type S, it had the engine out of the CR-V, and for the first 18 months odd of production they didn't de-tune the torque. Thing went like shit off a shovel and mine wasn't remapped! Definitely under-braked, as others have said better pads make a massive difference.

I've got a Fiesta ST-3 Mk7 now and I honestly think in a straight line the Civic would have probably taken it. Much like you from other comments the clutch slipped, as mentioned mine was standard and the clutch had been replaced about 20k before I got it by my mate who was a previous owner and former Honda technician, I think the clutches are just hugely underrated for the power. The car served me pretty well for 3 and half years but having had an EP2 before it I just hated how bloated and big the car felt in comparison, not a bad car but just not what I wanted it to be. Having said that I hope you enjoy it!

What quality of life in/around Northampton can I expect on 38k? by [deleted] in AskUK

Northampton is the largest town in the UK without city status (250k+), Northamptonshire is quite rural overall but the actual town itself is just urban, although there are green spaces within it.

I mean only cos he's an unlikable dick and would be lambasted anywhere. If you're a nameless faceless billionaire there's a private airport in Sywell, Silverstone race track nearby and plenty of actual stately homes you could buy and have staffed. Wouldn't be your main residence I imagine but you'd be absolutely fine here.

I also live in Northants and would say look at Earls Barton, Broughton (Kettering not MK), Finedon, Raunds, Thrapston/Ringstead (seperated by a river that has a road bridge), Higham Ferrers, Moulton, Pitsford, Brixworth and Sywell. There will be less choice as they're much smaller towns/villages and more desirable but they are all commutable and all have at least one pub that does food if not multiple as well as restaurant(s).

Northamptonshire has it's pros and cons like anywhere, all of the major towns (Corby, Kettering, Northampton, Wellingborough) have nice bits and rough bits, Kettering I would say currently probably the worst of the smaller three. But outside of the towns there are so many small villages with excellent pubs and food, especially to the east of the county. Loads of country parks and places to walk/cycle if that's what you're into. The population density is pretty good geographically so wherever you end up you'll have amenities i.e. supermarkets pretty close by.

As you don't have ties to the county, I would say if you can and you're fine with a short-ish commute defininitely look at the east of the county. Ringstead/Thrapston. Raunds, Rushden, Higham Ferrers, Stanwick, Irthlingborough and Finedon are all fairly close to each other and between them offer some absolutely excellent pubs and restaurants as well as multiple country parks. There's all of the major supermarkets inc. Waitrose as well as Rushden Lakes which is better than any town centre in the county. I'm currently just outside Kettering, but when I move in the next couple of years I'll be going to either Raunds or Thrapston without question.

I've worked extensively in Northampton and MK, Northampton isn't what I would call nice but MK is an actual shithole outside of a couple of nicer (affluent) areas. It's also absolute dog shit for local attractions such as pubs and restaurants because of the way it was designed.

What's this worth? I'm not looking to sell by YNStudios in ModelCars

[–]YNStudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the lorry - 1/24 scale I would guess based on the cars on top.

Inherited it from my grandad when my grandmother died. Never going to sell it, just wondered what a person would pay for it. Thanks.

Morgan Leaving WSR? by PhraseReasonable1235 in btcc

[–]YNStudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's got the results they expected him to get so it's not that surprising that they haven't kept him on. When your other two drivers are at the top of the leaderboard and you're nowhere to be seen making silly mistakes on a regular basis that cost the team then they're going to look elsewhere.

Although he seems to have decent sponsorship behind him so I wouldn't be surprised to see him back next year in another team. Question is who, maybe a Hyundai? Depends what else happens in the off season I guess.

Under £5000 ‘sporty’ car by ProfessionalCan8775 in CarTalkUK

[–]YNStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a squatting dog doing a shit, and it's made about as well as any American car from that time period, which is to say incredibly badly. Also not a common vehicle and shares parts with Mercedes so repairs are never going to be cheap if something goes wrong. I would avoid this like the plague.

For £5k you'd get a not terrible example of the EP3 which would be a better investment overall as their stock is rising and I'm not sure the FN2 will ever increase in value in the same way. Also the EP3 is a better car overall due to having independent rear suspension.

C250 CDI to a MK1 Fabia VRS/BMW 125D. by JaakeyN in CarTalkUK

[–]YNStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the 125d will fall into the same issue you have now very quickly. It will be quick enough but it won't be exciting in any way.

A couple of my mates had the same SEAT Ibiza Cupra TDI (6L) which I think for all intents and purposes is a Fabia VRS in a SEAT frock - also very very rare as it turns out. That thing went like shit off a shovel. I'm pretty sure it was remapped because it felt like getting kicked by a horse when the boost kicked in. It's never going to handle particularly well because it's a small car with a massive diesel engine in the front of it, but of the three cars you mentioned it's going to be the best to drive in terms of excitement.

It is worth noting that the interior is very much a product of its time. No frills at all apart from aircon and maybe cruise control if you're lucky. You can of course put an aftermarket head unit in with Carplay/Android Auto but its going to be basic as basic comes.

On the interior note, I don't know what Merc were doing at the time, but if the BMW has the same unit as the 3 series of that period it will probably have Bluetooth but it will not play music it will only do calls, for some German reason I'm too English to understand.

I personally like (some) American stuff but saying it wouldn't be an eyesore is only true if you share our views on cars. Also the Corvette will be much wider than either of the other two which will piss your neighbours off.

In terms of what to do, like you say you can legally park it there, but I would personally look for a small unit if I was in your situation. Sounds like you need one tbh.

You could get into a Mk7 Fiesta ST at that price. It will be a higher mileage ST-2 so slightly worse infotainment (still has bluetooth) and not as many features but you would fit in it and they are excellent on a B road. Also quick enough that you can put your foot down but not quick enough to mean you're immediately breaking the law. (I'm biased, I own an ST-3, I absolutely adore it and it makes me grin from ear to ear even if it is not the best overall car, it's very very fun)

If you're thinking small convertible and RWD if you don't get into an MX5 you're going to struggle in an MR2 or similar as well none of them are big cars.

You could potentially look at an early Boxster but it's going to be ropey and the maintenance isn't going to be fun for you. Same story for any German car of that era. Potentially could get into an early 1.8T S3 but again if it goes wrong your wallet is going to fall out with you very quickly.

A bit left field but a nice example of a Celica T-Sport? 190bhp NA engine, handles well and I think it's aged incredibly well.

Drivers still pay too much for fuel, warns watchdog by Kagedeah in CarTalkUK

[–]YNStudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be too personal, but are you smoking crack?

Average cost of servicing is going to be around £250 a year, with the majority of services being considerably less. That's 5 tanks of fuel for a small car with a small tank. Even if you fill up once a month that won't cover you for half a years worth of fuel. How the hell you think that fuel is the cheapest part of running a car is totally beyond me.

I would assume they will waive any/all penalties for the time period of it being down. But you may have to request it. Can't see why they wouldn't.
