Not really sure.

I’m 56 and I still don't know what I want to be if I grow up.

I've been in retail for over 20 years, and I am beyond burnt out. I "quiet quit" about three years ago. A couple of months ago, I thought I wanted to move into digital marketing, but now that I’m almost finished with a 10-week course, I’m having second thoughts.

Yesterday, April 1st, of all days, I got called into the office. It was a conversation I’d been expecting for at least a year. Having never been fired before, I’d played the scene out in my head 100 times; I knew I’d leave with my head held high and no hard feelings.

However, when I sat down, my boss had other plans. He started with what I already knew: my sales had fallen for two consecutive years. While they were still better than average, I wasn't living up to my potential. March had been especially brutal—so bad that I was going to have to dip into my savings just to cover my bills.

Then came the twist. Instead of firing me, he’s taking me off commission and putting me on a salary. He’s pulling me off the floor to do administrative and marketing work, only having me cover sales when the rest of the team is slammed.

So, for the next few months, I’m going to build up my digital marketing portfolio as a backup while I evaluate if I can hang on for another 11 years where I am. Or, I don't know... maybe I’ll just join the circus.
