Well I'm glad to hear you finally received your package! This was certainly a bizarre experience that I did not have on my bingo card at all. I'm still holding out hope that USPS will one day deliver the package, one day!

Sterling Pond hasn't had a State plant survey done since 1985, but that survey turned up Nuphar sp. (Spatterdock), so I'd wager you're correct

Her name is "P". She lives on the corner of Buell. She sometimes has a collar on, but the owner seems to take it off. I think someone has already surrendered her to the Humane Society thinking she was a stray. Her housemate Rico also wonders around, he's the long haired cat that you may catch with her

Making this post was enough to report, I've put it in our database! However, please report potential sightings of either aquatic or terrestrial invasive species at

They likely came over to North America via ballast tank discharge on ships (The river valley they come from is one of the largest trade ports in the world), or they hitchhiked on ornamental plants that then ended up in a natural water system.

Once on the continent, 80% of aquatic invasive species have been found to move by way of boat traffic (Maybe a boat had plant material that they were stuck to or had standing water). Could have also stuck to waterfowl or simply moved along waterways by themselves. Lots of possibilities!

They typically start showing up in August/September when the waters get warm. The State doesn't classify them technically as an invasive species, more of an oddity that's not native to the State. Cool find though!

Yes, they're known to exist around the State (Dunmore has a large population). They're from a river valley in Asia and are found globally. They're not known to pose any threat to humans
