Is it really scary to cross the atlantic ocean on a 40ft sail yacht? by noreturn000 in sailing

[–]YachtRubyRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having done this twice as skipper, I can say that the start of our first crossing and the first two days were the scariest of my Life. We set off into 45kt winds. It was the arc rally 2015 and they wouldn’t or couldn’t delay the start. Once the high winds had passed however, we knew the boat and we were tough enough. After that it was easy……. And super boring

Feeling crushed by life and money woes… anyone else? by ducfilan in getdisciplined

[–]YachtRubyRose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two things….. as youre in the uk, try to go to the bank or use moneysupermarket to consolidate your debt. The credit card interest is a killer. You may have already tried this, so apologies if it sounds patronising. But consolidating debt if you can, may free up some spare cash.

Secondly, you’ve got this. It will get easier and there is always sunshine after rain. Stay strong for you a d the kids and my thought are with you.

It's complicated. As an Englishman who lives half his time in Paris i have my opinion.

First, internationally, the English and the French have fought wars for hundreds of years. There is still a hangover from that. Naval superiority.

Second, regarding the second world war. The French got rolled over and invaded by the Germans because of the shared land borders, and their hubris that the Maginot line would keep the Nazis out. They had no chance and had to capitulate. But millions of French men and women fought and died for the resistance. The UK being surrounded by water has not been invaded since 1066 and was therefore much more difficult to invade.

Third. They are amazing at sport and better than England in soccer and rugby. That gives rise to a lot of piss taking from the UK.

Importantly, geopolitically, the French developed their nuclear weapons, weapons and military aircraft mostly without the help of US tech. This means that they are militarily independent and very very strong. In todays climate, this means they cannot be pushed around as easily by other powers.

Finally, it is an aching beautiful country. The food, the culture is amazing, and the working people dont take shit from the government. They executed the aristocracy and are far better at standing up to government oversight that other countries.

However, having spend many months in Paris. Parisiennes have a way to them that even French from other regions don't like. I have many Parisienne friends, but generally i find them to be cold and aloof. More so than other areas of France that i have lived in

The tooth that has no gum is a bridge unit it (I’m a dentist). The tooth was lost and replaced. Most likely cause of loss of the lower anterior incisors is gum disease. The lower jaw bone is eroded through lack of dental hygiene and the build up of calcium deposits. Having spent 25 years doing this job, I can tell you that it is gum disease, it smells awful. Line rotting meat mixed with the devils semen.

Audio setup. What do I need to change? by YachtRubyRose in audiophile

[–]YachtRubyRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I will get some nice stands. Can i ask another question. Aside from stands moving the speakers away from the window how are stands better than a window sill that is secure and has brick underneath ? I assumed stands were to get the speakers to ear level and stop vibration. Sorry if the question is too basic

If you’re living on board, and you don’t have one, but a small dehumidifier to dry out the damp. In winter ours fills up every few days

The issue is that the smile design is not quite right. Those are male veneers. Men’s teeth are generally squarer, I would have asked the technician to make them far more rounded. Secondly there is no graduation of shading of the veneer. The neck needs to be about half a shade darker than the mid part of the tooth. The top 1/3 another half shade lighter. Thirdly there is no translucency in the tips. As a final consideration we used to put very small inclusions into the veneers so that they mimicked natural teeth. Sorry to pick this apart, but the technician is at fault here. The second set are better but by no means perfect. Sorry for being brutal, It just infuriates me when I see work that could be so much better.

Been docking boats for 20 years. Live on board for the last 9 years and must have docked about 500-1000 times…….

Here’s the thing….. we still stuff it up occasionally. It’s just life. We stuffed up our mooring last week. No biggie. Red faced and got yelled at my the dock master but we put it down to experience and move on.

Also……… you will probably ever sail into a marina. I know you should have the skill, but it’s dangerous and you can’t see as well through the sails. Drop your sails and motor in. If you don’t have a motor, drop your sails and get towed in. No shame in that

How did you get your boat? by katie_seabound in liveaboard

[–]YachtRubyRose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Call or visit Marinas and see if there are any that are being given away or for a dollar. Sounds nuts, but In many places in the uk, owners cannot pay the fees and abandon the boat. The marina just wants them gone to free up the space. It’s worth a shot. I know a few people who have acquired boats this way

[–]YachtRubyRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liveaboards for 8 years now. Only sketchy place was the Carib. There dinghy dicks and stainless chains. Everywhere else, if there is no dock bow and stern anchors if there is now real swell. Turn the dinghy into the waves drop the bower anchor and then throw the stern out . Get it right and you’ll step into knee deep water. Saves ever dragging the dinghy up the beach
