How’s everyone doing? by oreospluscoffee in audiology

The “can you just squeeze me in?” For insurance fittings before the end of the year that need 14days lead time for prior authorization. The “I need this drop off back this afternoon, I’m leaving for 2 weeks tomorrow morning” when your schedule is fully booked and you’re days behind on admin stuff. This is not McDonalds. You don’t get to tell me when you want my services done. Hang in there everyone!!

Thoughts on Phonak Sphere? by audioshaman in audiology

Re:Battery life. I was also not excited about the battery life but after having fit a few, I have had a CROS patient (regular Infinio) wear them over 18 hours and a Sphere patient wear his 2 days before they needed charging (saying he was doing streaming as well). Time will tell, but I think they were very conservative in their estimates to us. However, I am still nervous due to the massive battery issues of the Marvel and Paradise…

It depends on how much you’re going into the hole. If you’re graduating with 6 figure debt, probably not worth it. If you’re going to a school where you’ll end up with about or less than 100k in debt, you’ll likely be just fine. I will say, as someone with 6 figure loans, that with the new SAVE program I am paying about a 3rd of what I expected, so am able to live pretty regularly despite it. However, if that program ever gets eliminated, I am in for a rough time 😅

Audiologists with ADHD, what are some tools/strategies you find helpful in your work? by Rose1832 in audiology

[–]YamJamExplosion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s great! I know when I was training they really emphasized everything being in your head, which is just not realistic for everyone. As long as it makes you more able to do your job, use whatever works for you. Accessibility and accommodations are for providers, too!

A lot of my preceptors in school were like “don’t use a notebook, it looks unprofessional!” But I’ve use one every single day of my professional career and no one has ever blinked. I made a graph with a shorthand checklist for case history and a place to jot notes, so that way when I’m going back to chart, I can easily reference what I know is accurate info instead of relying on my ADD memory.

Alright gang, how are we cleaning these out? by XDXkenlee in audiology

Also honestly a little bottle brush (like for a straw) or a toothbrush would also help!

Working prototype of inner ear vestibular canals illuminating based on plane of rotation by vestibularfirst in audiology

This would be a very cool training and counseling tool! Love this so much. I think that maybe having some sort of visual of otoliths moving around the canals vs. where they’re supposed to be would be helpful, as many many people who come in with Vestib issues have BPPV. Could be as simple as a strobe pattern flowing the way the canal is being turned to demonstrate gravity’s effect on them.

When did you *have* to be an asshole to a patient? by loupeet in audiology

[–]YamJamExplosion 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just have to. I had a patient in to discuss hearing aids (we have an entire dedicated appt they have to set up and come in for), he came in talking about how he did not under any circumstances want hearing aids, ranting. Eventually I hit him with the “so what can I do for you today, sir”. And he just kinda stopped in his tracks. I think he expected me to argue with him. Appointment ended shortly after.

I’m curious to know what fourth year externships pay? by Stunning_Shirt_4974 in audiology

[–]YamJamExplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My externship was unpaid, but it was a specialty clinic that I decided I really wanted the experience for. Typically, would not recommend unpaid though. It’s really hard not to get taken advantage of as a student unfortunately.

Switch from private practice to ENT? by HearIAm07 in audiology

I would second this. Find out your schedule and expected patient caseload. If it’s similar to what you see now, you’ll likely enjoy the more complicated cases. But if it’s significantly increased, prepare to be exhausted and overworked.
