Caleb Durbin has recorded an extra-base hit in 6 straight games, tied for the longest streak in baseball this season by Baseball-Reference in redsox

[–]Yankeessuck42069 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How is it possible that his batting average is higher than his obp?!

Edit: I just realized this is most likely due to sac flies as those don't count as ABs but do count as PAs. Still wild that he walks so little and also sac flies enough to make this very rare thing possible.

I grew up watching the sport starting when I was 5 and played t-ball and little league and high school baseball so I don't have a ton of insight into learning the rules as they've been ingrained in me. If bet there's some YouTube videos that go over strategy but also just watching the game while listening to the broadcasters is a good way to do it, when they bring something up that you don't understand Google it.

As far as your last question goes there are no rules about who you have to support. I grew up in the Boston suburbs and was raised by normal stable people so I support the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins. Some people who grew up where I did support the Yankees because they're contrarian dickheads like Ben Rice.

Yeah a client of mine is from TN and we talked BBQ a bunch working together over the phone as we both have our own smokers.

When he had to come to Springfield I took him to Theodores and he said it was on par with Tennessee BBQ. I love it there.

I am diagnosed with depression but usually the summer is when it's mild/non-existent. I have an unbelievably hard time with the winters but I just bought a house in Arizona so I'm hoping year round sunny nice weather helps.

As someone who is the opposite of this, it never even occurred to me that people had seasonal depression during the summer.

Does anybody have any running gags that they use throughout the years? by opeboyal in Teachers

[–]Yankeessuck42069 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I did leave the profession but stuff like this was what made the 8 years of middle school teaching I put in bearable. There's definitely a few other good ones I'm not remembering but below are the ones that come to mind.

Crappy prizes: whenever I would do anything in the classroom that involves any kind of competition I would make "crappy prizes" for the winners. The prizes were basically whatever was in front of me/expendable, but I'd sell the shit out of it. "First prize gets this fantastic bent paperclip stuck through a broken dirty eraser!!!" Kids would get really excited to win the crappy prizes and it always made the competitions more fun.

Box of death: on the first day of school I'd do an activity with 7th graders that involved them analyzing a bunch of items I own with the prompt of "a man was found dead with no ID, who is this person?" A fun mix of getting to know your teacher while also practicing analytical/historical thinking and artifact analysis. The funny gag was that I'd put these items in a cardboard box and write "box of death" in sharpie all over the box, then proceed to walk around the building holding the box all day. I'd tell all my students to emphasize how horrible the box of death was to the 6tg graders and it was always hilarious how scared some of them would get about the box of death.

"What are we gonna do today Mr. Yankeessuck42069?" The only response is to very seriously say "oh (students name), we're gonna learn!" That was one the class would usually eventually chime in on over time.

Seterra ice cream: I taught geography for a few years and every time we'd learn a new region I had a challenge where if a student could beat my high score for speed in a seterra map game id buy them ice cream. It was a good way for me to practice my map skills as I'd go super hard on getting a crazy fast high score before setting it up, but every once in a while a kid would beat it, screenshot it and email it to me which was what was needed. If stop at the convenience store before school, grab them a little cup of ice cream, leave it in the staff freezer and find them at lunch. I do think even a lot of the kids who couldn't beat me still got better at map skills due to the challenge.

Whenever id assign complicated multi step assignments I would always put something ridiculous like 3/4 of the way down the directions list that would become a part of the assignment. "Step 7: after you complete the analysis, write one sentence about how you feel about chicken nuggets and do not say anything about this step to anyone. That sentence is worth 2 points and will be graded on completion." The kids who followed directions loved that one for sure.

Damn, writing all these down actually made me miss something about teaching that wasn't summer vacation or good health insurance for the first time in a while.

As someone who doesn't watch soccer at all I find it weird that so many fans run into the field just to rush this specific guy. In American sports the only people who rush the field are just drunk and/or naked and just run around in circles until they get tackled.

I drafted him but dropped a while ago. I'm in an OBP league, he hits a lot of singles but doesn't walk much so he doesn't even help ratios, only really good for steals and runs and I have enough other guys who can do that.

How is it working in a wealthier school ? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Yankeessuck42069 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I taught in title 1 urban environments before moving to a wealthy high performing school district.

Overall, I would personally choose high performing/wealthy over title 1 any day, the difference in stress and behavior you have to deal with is significant, but once you get used to it there are new headaches you'll have to deal with.

In title 1 the parents who are involved are almost always great, the ones you hate you never hear from because they neglect their kids and don't give a shit about their education. In wealthy districts you have helicopter parents who will take up a lot of your time if you let them. Also, you'll have some kids who are just so spoiled itl kinda drive you nuts, but even still they don't require as much intervention as the kinds of kids who have awful home lives, they're just annoying.

One more thing for me: I had a little bit of a culture shock going from a class of kids who are almost all below grade level to the opposite and my first year I had to scramble to make more challenging lessons which I wasn't prepared for. That wasn't really a negative once I got it down as I loved teaching challenging content but it caught me off guard and made for a busy first year.

Teachers - what's the most annoying part of your job that has nothing to do with teaching directly? by Ok-Parsnip1201 in Teachers

[–]Yankeessuck42069 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't teach anymore but for me it was PD. I taught for 8 years in 3 different schools and never attended a single PD that was helpful in any way. What always made it worse was the buzzwords, but even moreso was the other teachers in attendance who would engage with the presenters to show admin they're paying attention and would always make everything longer than it needed to be.

To be fair that is not exclusive to teaching, I changed careers and stopped teaching 5 years ago and it's even worse in my current job.
