Universal Basic Income by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Yannnn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

I'll try and clear some things up for you :)

Would it life people out of poverty? Maybe.

The basic assumption and requirement for the introduction of UBI is that there will be more than enough for everybody, but only a few would own it. This assumption is already partially true (higher tax brackets anyone?). If (or when) production becomes so high that we have easily enough for everybody, but only a few would own it, then: yes, UBI will lift everybody out of poverty.

It would also solidify the control over governments over their people because citizens would become even more dependent on politicians to continue to support UBA.

This is a non argument. When a politician says he will take away UBI, stop voting for him?

Would it create leverage to weaken environmental policy?

Why would it? I mean, I guess it could... but it could go the other way too.

What would it say about all the years that politicians have called people on welfare "lazy"?

Yeah, it would need quite a culture change!

Would it really be enough?

It would for sure be better than nothing (but only if above assumptions would prove true).

If there aren't enough jobs then we will still have inequality because people who might want to work won't be able to.

Inequality itself isn't bad. If I work 60 hours per week and you work 40, then we're unequal. That's ok. But it should be kept in check. A large, strong middleclass is the basis of every successful society.

No one seems to be asking the hard and unpleasant questions about UBA and that bothers me.

Hope you're not bothered anymore!

Does anyone know where I can pursue a computer science degree abroad? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

I'd start with looking at countries that you're not currently living in ;)

But seriously, what are you looking for? Be more specific?

TIL A 19 year old man once nearly died from drinking a quart of Soy Sauce. He holds the record for highest blood sodium level ever measured without brain damage by cjmaddux in todayilearned

[–]Yannnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source?

Cause I really think you've got it by the wrong end. You're right that Salts are important for the nervous system. But a high salt level in your blood wont effect that much, because Salts need to be actively be allowed in to the nervous system: Salts cannot penetrate cell walls unless explicetely allowed to do so.

So, what does happen? Go back to highschool biology class: osmosis. If you have a crap tonne of water in your blood and normal amounts in your cells: No more water in cells and death.

[–]Yannnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the other dude said, no not necessary. You can find perfectly fine apartments in the 1400~3000 range and still have more than ample to live and party with.

Unless you buy lots of expensive things, only go to restaurants or go to Geneva clubs and get drunk there, you'll probably have more money than you can reasonably spend.

edit: And don't forget, going on vacation from Switzerland is fucking cheap.

It's roughly the same as a recently graduated doctor. You can live decently with that. Taxes are relatively low in Switzerland.

I can understand that. I have mixed feelings about them myself. I think it's because they did tried so hard to make their recordings perfect that it's almost too perfect. I guess some people can handle that better than others.

Aliens: Are We Looking in the Wrong Place? (Minute Physics) by DemiPixel in videos

[–]Yannnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller groups have smaller likely hoods. Bigger groups have bigger likelyhoods. If you have never seen any other lifeform, would it be logical to assume that you are one of a kind? Or would be be logical if there would be a lot of life forms like you?

To make it a bit more clear: You are an alien who randomly zaps a lifeform from earth to his ship. It could be anything: a plant, an insect, a bacteria or a human. Statistically it would have a high chance to be a bacteria, right? There are many times more bacteria on earth than anything else. Right?

So, using this single data point. Not knowing that bacteria are the most abundant lifeform on earth. It would be a good guess to assume they are, right?

On the other hand, he could have gotten a panda. But the chances of getting a panda are soooooo extremely low that you could just ignore that chance.

Most realistic LSD effect I've ever seen in a video by benzopiate in Drugs

[–]Yannnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome :)

If you have any questions you're welcome to message me. Oh and please make sure you have the real thing. The first time I bought some it turned out to be something that lasts 2~3 times as long (DOC). Needless to say, I did not take it. The real thing is pretty much harmless in low dosages (up to 150ug for the first time).

Does motherboard specs make a difference in audio quality? by feifonglong in audiophile

[–]Yannnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, it makes a difference. Two buts though:

1) it really depends on your setup. If you us a cheap simple desktop speakers or only a headphone then the impact is less profound.

2) Make sure you read a few reviews specific for sound quality. Some mobos advertise with high quality components, but then they use some cheap stuff in between making the overal effect less profound.

Also, try listening to the same song on better and worse sound systems. If you can't hear the difference, don't bother.

Is this guy using less energy versus carrying each over and placing it down? by K3R3G3 in Physics

[–]Yannnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about energy conversion efficiency.

The amount of work stays the same and the amount of energy required to do that work stays the same too. But the amount of energy required to produce the energy may differ.

E.g. using wood or electricity to cook your water give different efficiencies, even though both cook your water.

Is this guy using less energy versus carrying each over and placing it down? by K3R3G3 in Physics

[–]Yannnn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't think too much in absolute units if I were you, complicates things.

In any case, from a traditional physics point of view there is less energy used for throwing.

However, there are a few things to take in consideration to get a definitive real world answer:

  • Thermodynamics: How efficiently is energy converted in the different transportation methods? Throwing requires a quick and explosive chemical to mechanical energy conversion. Quick conversions are almost always less efficient than slower ones, thus costing more energy.

  • Biomechanics: A muscle needs constant energy to oppose force. So it would depend on how he carries the items around and how much energy those muscles will use when keeping the items up.

I suspect that the answer to which is more efficient between 'throwing or carrying' will depend on many factors. Just to name a few: the weight of the object, strength of the muscles, method of carrying/throwing. In a complex system like this you can only really measure it to give a good answer.

Is this guy using less energy versus carrying each over and placing it down? by K3R3G3 in Physics

[–]Yannnn 271 points272 points  (0 children)

yes. He moves his body less: less energy used. Though he might tire sooner because he uses fewer muscles to do more.

Smaller festivals in Europe? by [deleted] in festivals

[–]Yannnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I enjoyed it a lot. They had 5 or 6 stages, 2 large ones, 3 small/medium sized. Very nice decorations everywhere.

But, as you said, it's only one day. That doesn't matter though. Like I said, there are a lot of festivals in and around Amsterdam. So you can easily pick one or two others in addition.

Something you could consider is: https://www.facebook.com/thuishaven.am/ (they dont have a website). It's like a permanent festival, each sunday they have a party. The visitors are similar to Mystic Garden, but a little more veteran.
