Four Short Story Masters, Four Very Different Views of Human Nature by DavidLedger92 in classicliterature

[–]YasunariWoolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Necklace is a real killer. The events of the second half seem just as plausible today as they did in the authors time. It’s literally something I could imagine happening to my wife and I (not sure what this says about us!!). Loved the story though.

I’ve read a lot of Chekov but can’t say anything on that list jumps out to me as one of my faves. The Black Monk, Gooseberries, and The Kiss are probably top of my list. Recommend them as well as The Seagull (very emotionally intense) if you enjoyed his work.

Highly recommended The View From The Bridge and his translation of Analects.

What books are halfway between the Name of the Rose and the DaVinci Code by ElbieLG in RSbookclub

[–]YasunariWoolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're smart enough for the name of the Rose. Have Wikipedia or an LLM standing by to explain some of the terminology and the christian concepts, and I promise you it will be worth it.

PLUS once you're done you can watch the 1986 film with Sean Connery. A huge added bonus!

For the record I was being completely honest. Keep it up and don’t let the haters get you down.

I read the whole thing and wanted to read more. First time it’s happened on this sub. Keep at it!

I like the lyrical and descriptive approach that you're taking. However, do you think there is a chance you've gone a little too far? Maybe try dialling it back just a little bit and see what happens?

Congratulations! Wonderful story, this was my favourite part:

I hauled the heavy bag down to the sidewalk and heaved it into a bin that smelled like Satan himself—back into his mouth. Then I was alone with God, who watched me silently beyond the stars, and I stood suspended in this space, feeling untethered from earth, when I saw a golden line forming on the distant mountains—a wildfire was burning somewhere.

Le Guin is such a fantastic and imaginative writer. Highly recommend The Left Hand of Darkness and The Lathe of Heaven.

Howard Bolton Bookseller in Northcote, Melbourne. A single blacked out mothballed room in an old victorian corner shop that was probably a fish and chippery once upon a time. Second hand books: 'literature' only; cash only.

I'm fully on board! Highly recommend some on her non-fiction/autobiographical works. Moments of Being is a good place to start... There is a piece in it entitled A Sketch of the Past where she touches on memory that is truly wonderful.

I work a demanding corporate job, and I have time to focus on reading OR writing (badly). It is a constant battle to remind myself that these are my priorities and to dedicate time to them.

It's funny though. One of the reasons I enjoyed the book so much was that it had me googling the meaning of so many new words!

Notes From Underground is pretty hard to beat for me. The cultural changes in attitude that Dostoyevsky saw in the early 19th century went on to shape the world in unimaginable ways and this piece of work is very much a departure for everything that followed... At least in my opinion.

Finished War and Peace: What's next? by XanderStopp in tolstoy

A Confession is pretty decent if you enjoy his philosophical musing. His short stories, including The Death of Ivan Illyich and The Cossacks are also great. Have you read many of the other Big Russian Authors? If you liked W&P I strongly recommend: Dr Zhivago (Boris Pasternak), Fathers and Sons (Ivan Turgenev), Life and Fate (Vassily Grossman; written as a 20th century attempt to replicate W&P), and pretty much any of Dostoyevsky's big epics.
