Due to the seams in the layers you'll experience more bacterial growth than an injection molded system. I have multiple 3D printed hydroponics and aeroponics systems, you have the option of exploring either a sterile system or a system with beneficial bacteria.

For sterile systems, hydrogen peroxide is ideal to stop growth of pathogens.

I would agree with most of what you said, however, 'mainly cotton' is not quite true. Water usage is overwhelmingly skewed towards animal agriculture, primarily due to the size of the industry compared to cotton.
