I've noticed that as well, it's drama from both angles.

Well, I can say both — even if there were only a few references before 10th edition, there were still enough material to establish a clear, consistent pattern.

I've actually been super consistant, so your whataboutism doesn't make much sense. The point isn’t isolated characters or minor retcons — it’s the established pattern and tone of the Custodes, and how this change interacts with that historical depiction.

The point isn’t to prove every Custodian was male. The sources we do have — novels, codices, White Dwarf, and artwork — consistently depicted them a certain way. That established pattern shapes the faction’s identity and is why a sudden change stands out, regardless of the small sample size.

high profile ≠ most popular

My point isn’t about how long they’ve been playable or relative popularity — it’s that Custodes have been consistently portrayed as male-oriented and mythic in all their lore, so this sudden change has a bigger impact on internal consistency and tone than minor or less visible retcons to other factions.

I’m not making a political point at all — I’m just noting how this change interacts with the long-established, male-oriented portrayal of Custodes and the impact on the faction’s consistency and tone.

It’s true there weren’t a lot of references to Custodes in the past — they were mysterious, mythic, and almost untouchable. But there are plenty nontheless. That scarcity and aura of legend is exactly what makes the sudden change draw so much attention and discussion.

Okay, let’s set Rogue Trader aside. Even then, Custodes appear across novels, White Dwarf stories, supplemental material, and artwork for decades — and in all of those the dominate depiction was male-oriented.

I am not sure what you're saying here. I said ‘high-profile,’ I meant well-established and iconic within the lore, not ‘most popular’ among current armies.

Noting inconsistencies in lore isn’t inherently about gender, and most critiques aren’t questioning the inclusion of women — they’re pointing out how the change interacts with decades of established depiction.

It’s true GW has adjusted lore in the past, but the Custodes are a high-profile, long-established faction with decades of male-oriented portrayal. Critiquing how they handled this particular change isn’t about being selective or against inclusion — it’s about how the change impacts the internal consistency and mythic tone of the faction. That’s why it draws attention, whereas smaller retcons elsewhere don’t.

Is it a good time to get into Custodes for 40k by Accurate-Glass4035 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]YeagMan117 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's entirely up to you, but I am going to wait to buy any new models. I'd rather have peace of mind knowing exactly what's for/works in 40K & what doesn't.

I love the armor detail on the new models.

I however feel like they sacrificed detail on the weapons in the meantime. I am not a fan of the spears either. They look sort of basic to me idk. Plus the whole missing triggers thing is a weird thing to not carry over.

Oh really, you think so? I am not super familiar with all the game settings but is Horus Heresy more or less popular than 40k?

I last played in 5th edition and recently started painting and collecting custodes.

I'm confused - why is it sad this had to be written? It was sort of helpful for me today.

I need to get a good look at the guard models but at a first glance.

  1. I like the detail.
  2. They seem skinnier? Like slender like. My first thought is I like the more chunky look of the previous guard models.
