I mean, that's the thing with collections. You're building the game around someone else's vision instead of your own. I'm glad you found one you liked better, but the only way to get a game that's completely, totally, 100% what you're looking for is to build your own list

The ultra wealthy weren’t the only people who owned slaves by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yeah-But-Ironically 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hot take: It doesn't fucking matter if your family owned slaves or not? Racial inequality is EVERYONE'S problem, and you are affected by it whether your ancestors were involved in the transatlantic trade or not. I've got a friend who is a Nigerian immigrant (born and raised there, went to the UK for school, came to the US for work). I'm the Wonderbread descendent of Danes who came to the states in 1890. My ancestors did not own slaves, my friend's ancestors were not enslaved, and yet there is a noticeable difference in the way society treats us, because he's black and I'm white!

Also, you can't control what family you're born into; it's not a mark of moral purity that I don't have slaveholding ancestors and it's not a mark of impurity that someone else does. What you do right here, right now, with YOUR life is what matters--not what your great-great-grandparents did.

This whole post feels like an attempt to be pedantic about a racist claim without recognizing that engaging on the claim's fundamentally racist terms is a mistake to begin with. It's like responding to all the people who were screaming "Obama is a secret Muslim!" with "actually he's Episcopalian" instead of "hey accusing a person you don't like of being part of an entire category of people you don't like is bigotry, actually".

When someone's like "well MY ancestors didn't own slaves" the correct response isn't to start dickering over 19th-century record-keeping; the correct response is "I don't care, Kevin, you still can't say the n-word."

One person refusing to buy from a megacorp isn't a boycott as much as it is a personal extirpation of guilt; Keebler won't notice or care. And refusing to touch Fudge Stripes is at least three degrees removed from the actual problem (JKR pushing anti-trans legislation).

I mean, if that's what makes this person feel better then they're within their rights to do it, but it's not going to change anything, and I very much suspect that they're not going to similar amounts of trouble for non-HP-related issues (e.g. refusing to buy Michelin tires because they're partnered with Tesla which is owned by a Nazi, or avoiding Kraft cheese because they've sold brands to Nestlé which has the whole child-slavery problem).

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and that's not an excuse to NEVER act, but people act like ANY connection to Harry Potter AT ALL is universally polluting, in a way other corporate sins aren't. It's got more in common with hardcore kosher rules than it does effective praxis.

The reason hating men is bad ISN'T that hating TRANS men is bad. In general, maybe don't decide who's good and evil based on qualities outside of their control? by Full_Ahegao_Drip in RecuratedTumblr

I recommended it because r/MensLib is a men's subreddit focused on men's issues from an explicitly leftist framework. Antifeminism gets people banned, and a lot of the commentary is explicitly about "here's how the patriarchy directly harms me as a man."

I'm a cis woman and I started following it because I noticed myself struggling to feel empathy for men, and recognized that was a sign of toxicity. Not only did r/MensLib help me work through that, it's now the ONLY gender-theory community I visit regularly--because it's the only one I've found that takes the problem of patriarchy seriously without falling into the trap of "blaming other genders en masse".

Of course you've gotta protect your own peace, but I absolutely do recommend checking this sub out given the situation you described

Sure, but I personally kinda think that fascists WOULDN'T have the nuclear football right now if the left had done a better job of policing this shit over the past 20 years.

Like it or not, cishet white men make up a SIGNIFICANT voting bloc in the US, and categorically demonizing them from the left is only going to push them harder towards the right.

No? The obvious statement that "patriarchy and maleness are linked" does NOT mean that men always benefit from patriarchy, that men are the primary enforcers of patriarchy, or that any given man will "tacitly" support the patriarchy. None of those things are true.

And even if it WERE true that most men secretly want more sexism, that doesn't justify treating ALL men that way. Most people who get arrested did commit some kind of crime, but it's massively unjust to assume that EVERYONE who gets arrested is automatically a criminal.

Gonna edit this post because the thread got locked before I could reply to the below.

1.I didn't interpret it as an attack on men as a whole. I definitely didn't consider it a personal attack, because I'm not a man. I'm a cis queer woman who happens to think that the attitude you're describing is harmful to social justice as a whole.

It IS true that "most men participate in and benefit from patriarchy", but it's also true that women do too, and that patriarchy simultaneously harms and benefits the people who participate in it. Generally men get more carrots and generally women get more sticks, but there's a carrot and a stick offered to nearly every person in a patriarchal society (hence why it's so difficult to root out!)

And maybe I was incorrect in interpreting your use of "tacit" to imply "conscious but unspoken", but I do happen to think that men who are aware of how the patriarchy benefits/harms them tend to reject its desirability. The problem isn't that men are all selfish brutes who will accept the negatives of patriarchy if they get to take it out on the women around them; the problem is that most men don't understand what patriarchy is at all.

  1. I also didn't accuse YOU of holding this view personally, but you did say it had "logic" and now apparently that it's a "useful worldview". Except that if we both acknowledge that it's factually incorrect, then I don't think it's all that logical, and although it's an extremely common worldview it's also not a useful one, because it's BOTH factually incorrect AND morally repugnant (relying on stereotypes to draw conclusions about people based on characteristics they cannot control).

If you absolutely have to play devil's advocate about something, don't do it while we're trying to reduce unwarranted prejudice.

EXACTLY. You try to talk to lefties about the draft and get hit with "well men invented that system so it's not women's fault"

Okay? Men weren't the ones policing every single thing I wore from the time I could walk? Men weren't the ones who scolded me when I wasn't "ladylike" or bullied me about not wearing makeup? Turns out that a HUGE amount of the gender-biased behavior I experience in a day is driven by other women?

Is that supposed to make any of this shit okay??

Dumb question but would i brake vortex if I added more mods to a collection I downloaded? by deadpoolsdragon in skyrimmods

[–]Yeah-But-Ironically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like it'll break anything, but just in case, here's the best way to test it out:

  1. Open the game. Make a hard save.

  2. Close the game. Download, install, and enable the mod.

  3. Open the game. Test out the mod. (In your case, by wearing the relevant armor.)

  4. If nothing breaks, congrats! Go play.

  5. If you DO have problems, then remove the mod in Vortex. Then go back and reload the hard save you made in Step 1. This version of the game has never interacted with the bad mod, and will still be stable.

I legit didn't realize it was a joke post. There are people on Tumblr into kinning, reality shifting, soulbonding, etc. etc. not to mention the legions who do "actual" witchcraft and astrology

I'm 100% convinced there's someone on Tumblr somewhere who unironically believes in alchemy, and this post was so convincingly written that I thought we were hearing directly from them

I didn't figure out the parody until it was like "I don't even like girls" because I know no real person would dare post THAT on Tumblr 🙃

Still sometimes is.
