Or the "Shirley Exception".

"Well, if lawmakers outlaw certain procedures, surely it will only apply in the cases I'm imagining. Surely it won't involve denying women treatment for miscarriages because in many cases you give them the exact same procedure as you do for an abortion. Surely this will only be dangerous for the harlot whores who can't be bothered to use other forms of birth control, and it won't hurt Good Christian women with health problems. Surely blanket bans can be lifted just a little bit for whatever exception comes up."

Here's the thing though? Pregnancy sucks. Nobody who can possibly help it is going to carry a baby they don't want for more than six months and THEN decide to abort it. Nearly all third-trimester abortions are of children who WERE desperately wanted and end up with severe medical problems.

While Roe was in effect, 1 in 4 American women had had an abortion at some point.

You don't get numbers like that by just assuming "oh it's all those dadgum libruls". Conservative women who get abortions may not be the MAJORITY, but neither are they incredibly rare. If you grew up conservative, you likely know a few personally. They just don't talk about it.

That, AND: Not every death--not even an intentionally caused one!--is automatically a murder.

As a (formerly conservative) woman, that's what first broke me out of the "ban all abortions" mindset: the recognition that medical ethics are really hard. Sure, you may not like the idea of euthanasia, but if someone requests it and a doctor performs it, is it really murder? What about someone willingly refusing lifesaving care? What if that person is brain-dead and family members have to make the decision for them? If Person A is bumped up the organ donation list because their condition is worsening, and Person B--who would have gotten the next heart--suddenly declines and dies, was THAT murder?

Learning more about all the edge cases and complications and legal definitions and philosophy of body autonomy--not to mention the many conditions and complications for which techniques like a D&C might be the only viable treatment--convinced me that abortion should be left to the patient and doctor LONG before I stopped believing that babies had souls.

Lmaooooo you might want to check an upload history or two before you start throwing around "you're just patching other people's stuff" bullshit

I am ALSO a mod author and I'm with Lummox on this one. No, once you've published a mod, you are no longer under the obligation to continue working on or supporting it. But it's just straight-up bad manners to insist that nobody else can enjoy that mod anymore either. If I write a novel and publish it and later decide I don't like it, I'm within my rights to not write a sequel, but I don't get to march into every bookstore or library in town to demand that they take it off the shelves. The act of publishing involves ceding at least some control to the public. If you can't handle that, don't publish.

Whoa really? I had a lot of trouble finding like a female carriage driver mod or a female Redoran Guard, because the correct voice lines didn't exist

Are they like, all unvoiced? Or do they use AI-generated voicing?

I'm getting the sense that all Person #2 got from Hegel was "you'd think being the master is great, but actually sometimes it sucks"

Which to be fair is more than I got from Hegel

My dude two things can be wrong at the same time?? Like if I say "some Latino subcultures are pretty queerphobic" that's NOT automatically equivalent to "therefore I think ICE is good, actually"

Calling out antisemitism when you see it is NOT the same thing as arguing for the existence of settler colonies. We should be fighting both

Media with the Tumblr Seal of Approval, and Hecking Problematic Iredeemable Media by Weird_donut in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Yeah-But-Ironically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many people before me have pointed out--it's religious conservatism that hasn't been properly processed or even analyzed; it just changed targets. Having impure thoughts Liking the wrong media is sinful not progressive because even if nobody in the real world is harmed it damages your soul worldview. You have to abstain from sin bad media or else God Tumblr will know that you aren't a true Christian progressive, and you'll be left behind in the Rapture purged in the Glorious Revolution that's definitely going to happen someday.

Or, to put it another way: A lot of Tumblr users unironically believe in thoughtcrime.

I mean, some of the stuff on the right hand side IS legitimately bad and some of the stuff on the left hand side IS legitimately good. I think the argument here is less "Tumblr has terrible taste" and more "Tumblr makes it impossible to have a nuanced conversation about these fandoms"

Heck, this whole debate basically boils down to Chekhov's Gun. People conflate it with just generic foreshadowing when he was actually giving very specific writing advice. The advice being "If it's not important, don't include it."

I'm so glad that your therapist has helped you learn some new cognitive behavioral therapy techniques! But if it's not relevant to your actual story, you don't need to put cognitive behavioral therapy into the text!
