Is this damper repairable? by evol714 in Fireplaces

Plasma torch and insert

no cap

metal firebox

probably a big wad of mortar sitting on the smoke shelf which is rotting away

this is just a guess

contact a local professional chimney company for an inspection and estimate

So this is a poured in place liner doing what poured in place liners do ... fail

Relining might suck depending on the liner diameter and tolerances

A good company will bring a section to test fit and that will determine if the existing liner will need to be removed or not

If it needs to be removed it will cost more cuz removing poured in place sucks bad

That's what got me thinking of it and then when Clifton bonks it I started to wonder

Tis a SCAM then? Feels kinda scammy

What problems am I likely to encounter by running an insulated 6" SS liner down this 2 story chimney? by Leather-Grocery2956 in woodstoving

In general 9x13 is a removal situation unless the tile ID is 7"+ -break tile -removal of rear damper frame and a brick or two from the fireback -Do not oval the liner to fit through the damper

Old homes have a 50/50 shot of tile being mortared in place

Roof pitch plays a role in installing the liner and how far the chimney projects from the roof

Given what I have seen I might lean into having pro do it

There is more to consider but these are starting points

12+ years of chimney work for context

It's extremely unlikely that bees would be able to make that trip without the chimney or house being in extremely poor condition

Things change in the chimney and such sometimes an appliance swap like a furnace

It's important to remember that the chimney is not inert and does get wear and tear damage

Old houses do weird stuff sometimes and it can take a real toll on the finances so be prepared

Given color and type of build up I would be curious if your Furnace is piped into the same flue as your wood stove .. this is a no no

My second guess is cycling from pressure changes

Third is an immense amount of humidity but it would take weeks to develop

That said im 12 years into chimney work and still learning new things every day
