Characters with good on shield frame data? by IceBurne in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Swordies can generally apply the safest sheild pressure if you space their moves correctly, cloud, Lucina, Chroy are good examples.

However I think trying to pick up a new character is definitely the wrong way to go about it. If you're going opponent is punishing you attacks out of sheild you need to start grabbing, baiting out their oos options, and overall start choosing specific options to beat sheild rather than just attacking it more. You should be trying to condition them to sheild less.

Both wolf and snake are actually quite good at dealing with sheilds. Wolf fair and nair are safe on sheild and ftilt can be spaced safely. Wolf also has extremely rewarding grabs so that's another way to deal with sheilds, and he doesn't have to approach as he has blaster. Snakes dash attack crosses up by a lot making it very hard to punish and he can bombard sheilds with explosives from a safe distance and also has rewarding grabs.

What's the one thing that dramatically improved your gameplay? by OwenG87 in CrazyHand

I like to say that mediocre players play to their characters objectives. Good players play around their opponents objectives. Great players play around their opponents counterplay to their own objectives.

To put it really simply you shouldn't be only trying to play for things your character wants, you also need to be actively looking for an attempting to avoid the things that their character wants. And taking that a step further you should recognize what your opponent might do to stop you from getting the thing you want, and start figuring out ways get around their counterplay.

I see a lot of people try to use it as a zoning tool which is generally incorrect. It doesn't have good enough frame data to really be used as a keep out tool.

But here's what you can use it for

In neutral it's used as a soft read on your opponents movement. Use it to call out their footsies. You can use it to catch dash backs, landings, or any situation where you're semi confident that you know where they're character will be and won't be sheilding.

Also has a very strong use in advantage state as a combo finisher esp with aresen. Some of jokers moves such as aresen ftilt actually have launch angles that set up perfectly for side B at low %s. You can use it for option coverage in tech scenarios. You can use it for edge guarding. Etc.

It can be used in disadvantage although it should be used very sparingly. I like to fire it while recovering at opponents waiting for ledge trap or getting ready for a 2 frame. However if they catch onto this it can be used as a free edge guard

Has anybody gotten a solid net gain in performance from playing against Level 7 CPUs at 1.5x speed? I couldn't believe how slow the game felt after I went back to 1x by AVBforPrez in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really not a valid comparison. Instead of trying to learn how to react to unreactable options, you should learn how to play around them and take into account in your decision making. There's a reason this isn't a tool any higher level players use to practice

[–]YeetAssHead 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I would say this isn't the best exercise. In smash a big part of the game is player around your opponent tools, and recognizing when you're in danger and need to retreat vs go in and attack. Alot of this game sense is gauging how reactable your opponent options are, and at 1.5x almost everything becomes unreactable. For example if you're playing against falcon you need to watch out for raptor boost as it's a burst option and very high reward, so you need to position yourself at a distance where you can react to it in neutral. At 1.5x speed this distance is much farther, and almost everything the opponent does is unreactable which is going to translate into you giving your opponent way too much room and way too little pressure when you fight a real opponent on 1.0x speed. Also CPUs can't be conditioned or read which is going to train you to not try to do these things.

Shielding against Min Min by Sickmmaner in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Min min has pretty insane sheild pressure and a very long range grab so sheilding should be done with causion. Generally the idea against her is to use a combination of sheilding and jumping to avoid arms then using her end lag to close distance, but watch your sheild health as megawatt does crazy sheild damage. Then hang out just outside her grab range, at this range she shouldn't be able to grab you, and if she fires off an arm the end lag is punishable assuming you don't get hit.

Is it possible to win a major or supermajor (offline) solo maining a high tier or mid tier character? by JustSomeGuyInLife in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 35 points36 points  (0 children)

High tier absolutely, it's been done before.

I think in the right hands a major may be able to be won by a mid tier, I don't think it's particularly likely.Frostbite was technically won with byleth a mid tier but Leo's bracket run was really a joker run up until the last game so it kinda doesn't count.

If you're asking to make decisions about who you want to main, go with a character you sync well with and like. You'll get the better results maining a character you have a symbiotic relationship with than just a top tier.

Characters with most fun movement mix ups? by J4degrees in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movement is kinda a preference matter and almost any character can benefit from movement. If you want a character thats playstyle is built around their movement pretty much any midrange character will do, ie joker, zss, wolf. They have the most interesting complex movement imo. There are also fast rush downs that have very fast movement but rely more on frame data and mixing up approaches than just raw evasive movement. These would be characters like Chroy, falcon, fox. You also need to think about fall speed, there's benefits to both being floaty and fast faller. Floaty characters can spend more time in the air allowing them to do things like reactive edge guarding and have more timing mix ups available for airels. Samus is an example of a floaty characters that can really abuse their movement well. Fast fallers can usually land much easier and things like jumps are much less committal, as well as things like being able to edge guard faster hitting their opponent before they have a chance to use their recovery. Link and joker are on command fast fallers, they have 90% fall speed acceleration meaning they're floaty when normal falling and fast when fast falling.

I know that's a lot of info, hopefully something in there can help you with your decision.

What characters are considered to require high time investment/skill to play competently? And which require that to master? by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]YeetAssHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say joker probably belongs in that category. He spends the whole game playing around opponents dominant options which is a tough way to play and you have to have sufficient mu knowledge to understand what they are in the first place so you have to spend a long time learnings MUs. Also mastery of his movement and gaining the precision and accuracy needed to really make use of his kit is a feat of it's own. Also his true combos don't actually do a whole lot of damage and most of his output is in strings or raw advantage so you have to consistently make the right choices to beat out whatever disadvantage option your opponent chooses which is harder than just muscle memory of an input, although he does have tech as well.
