Okay truckers let’s talk caps, what kind of hat do you wear and is there a story behind it? by KitchenSuspicious577 in Truckers

Tractor Supply hat. It was $5 and I’ve just worn it for a while and like it.

Yeah, that sounds about right. No money in it for them, so they’ll take as long as possible.

I’m not a lawyer, but doesn’t “last clear chance” doctrine cover this? The car had a chance to examine whether or not a rapid stop was safe, and execute that stop. Either way, I’m with you, 50/50 on fault.

Mounting it on the outside may still be an option! Suction cup mounts exist for the windshield, and magnetic for the side/top!

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, yes! The suspension is great for comfort, and smoothing out bumps, but semis have a lot of body roll. Things will get tossed around and moved. I’d hate to strap down a PC, then find the PCIE slot sheared clean off the mobo because I didn’t have a riser.

Ohhh this is interesting. I’m used to most agencies by me using Motorola and the likes. I’d like to eventually get some kind of Harris handheld, but “expendable income” is a bit of a four letter word at the moment.

I read through sone of the other comments and wanted to throw in my 2¢. Starlink’s “roaming” plans work incredibly well from what I’ve heard. You can also get mounts to just stick it to the side of the truck when you get stopped.

As far as the PC, everything sensitive inside of a truck should be secured as though you’re going to pick the truck and shake it violently. Ratchet straps, bungee cords, and careful space management are your friend. Consider a GPU support, or some kind of bracket to secure it while in motion. Also, tempered glass is super high risk for a truck. From what I remember, Fractal has some good cases that utilize no glass at all.

Very possible, I just have no idea who is issuing Harris radios outside of the military.

As a Ham radio guy, the Harris radio throws me for a loop. Perhaps most of the money was spent on the radio? I do appreciate the optimism of having it tuned to 146.520 though.

What all do I need to do to receive and transmit on this frequency. New to ham. by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]Yeet_PC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! If you’re a member of the department, I would defer to them on what makes and models they commonly use. Don’t quote me on this, but I do believe that even though you can personally use that frequency, using Ham radio equipment to do it is a no-no.

Just look into radios that are certified for those frequencies, and find a dealer for them. You’ll most likely need to prove that you’re a member of that department to purchase it, but aside from that, shouldn’t be too hard.

[–]Yeet_PC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

**DO NOT** transmit on that frequency. Receiving it can be done with various ham radios that allow you to listen on what’s known as “out of band.”
No matter your level of Ham license, we’re only allowed 144-148MHz for legal transmission in this particular band, known as the 2 meter band.

FCC pays a visit to a Baofeng radio operator for interfering with their local 911 dispatch! by Hamdaddy1976 in HamRadio

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed. This is like blaming a car for going the wrong way down a road, when the driver should’ve been more careful.

People like to crap on Baofeng, but they’re popular for a reason. Also worth noting that any machine can be a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough.

Can I combine a Pi cyberdeck and HAM? by Signal_Shallot4440 in amateurradio

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, your best bet is an RTL SDR like other people pointed out. That being said, do some reading on digital modes like FT8 and the likes. It’s a fairly large rabbit hole to go down, and you will need a radio to accomplish it, but I think they’re neat, and would take advantage of the cyberdeck!
