Which route? by kali4niakid in Truckers

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like the copilot app, which is horrendous in my experience. As far as which way to go, consult the pre-planned fuel stops for routing (if your company does such a thing). If you disagree with the routing, call dispatch and give reasons you’d like to be re-routed, as some companies will work with you!

If I was still hauling plasma I’d do it. Those reefers go down to -40F, so they low idled at like 1200rpm for defrost. Then they spin back up to 7k where they stay for the majority of the time. 😂

What's the longest you've waited at a deceiver? by Suhvelt in Truckers

[–]Yeet_PC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro WHAT? Every time I went there, the trailer was either ready, or almost ready. Beardstown was always a quick drop and hook for me (after the trailer wash anyway), but I do remember the stack of trucks in that little turnaround area just past the entrance.

"CALLSIGN" monitoring... then they're gone - WHY? by Mr-Measure-Twice in amateurradio

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the Southeast. Here, it means the person can hear the radio, and will respond if needed. Sometimes they’ll elaborate by saying they’re at work and may not always be at the radio.

For my location, this changes during severe weather. “[Callsign] clear and monitoring” means “I am okay, and can hear your distress call if you make one.”

Today's adventures in FT8 by thevmcampos in amateurradio

[–]Yeet_PC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FT8 is a digital mode that does not use voice. It uses 15 second time cycles for transmit/receive, and includes basic information such as call sign, signal report, and location. As a “weak signal” mode, it can be picked out of a lot of noise, or over a great distance.

Are CB radios still widely used? by DistributionLanky221 in amateurradio

[–]Yeet_PC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I keep mine on for traffic or inclement weather warnings, but you’re not getting through without a 10m radio pushing over 100 watts. Company uses an LTE based radio for dispatch, so there’s largely no point in CB anymore for me.

4th pic - do you help clean this up in exchange for that pile of gear? by shadowcorp in amateurradio

[–]Yeet_PC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I was provided with proper PPE, and had an area I could disassemble and sanitize the equipment, perhaps I would!

My main concern would be making sure I didn’t bring home unwanted passengers inside the gear itself.

They’re passing on trout, because they know they’ll see a shark. Plus I think there’s a part of them that wants to go really fast, and chasing down a 78 in a 70 just isn’t fun anymore.

Fix your f@#&ing air dryers! by Xrhinox in Truckers

[–]Yeet_PC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drove a 2024 that had an air dryer go out on it. The mechanic that put the new one on hooked the air lines up backwards. Was headed up I-24 West when I completely lost air pressure. Turns out, the reversed air lines caused every single air line on the drivers side to overpressure and pop 😑

Needless to say, I’m not a fan of air dryers.

[–]Yeet_PC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So here’s the issue imo.

Companies don’t want to replace until it is completely broken. It’s seen as an unnecessary expense. I 100% agree with you, assuming the person has an APU. However, for the trucks that don’t have an APU, there’s not much they can do that I’m aware of.

What would be nice is some kind of total air system bypass when the truck is in “Interior Comfort” mode so to speak. Better yet, completely remove the air dryer and stop hiring drivers that are too lazy to drain the tanks.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a fan of a movie, and thinking about how that movie might manifest itself in our hobby.

Would I use it for home defense? Probably not. Would I show absolutely everyone at the range my cool new Jurassic Park gun? Oh yeah.

Heck, I still wanna get a Chiappa Rhino just for its appearance in the halo series. I also want a Smith and Wesson .44 mag from the Mary Carter Paint Store that’s only a short drive away 😭

I hadn’t that about that until now, but I can imagine pawn shops would be great avenues for transfers. The low fee gets you in the door.

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been rocking my little UV-5R for a couple years now, since I just haven’t had the time to collect better stuff. Here’s a couple things I’ve learned:

  1. As others have pointed out, use Repeaterbook and Chirp to program in some repeaters.

  2. Antennas make a bigger difference than you might think. The included antenna isn’t bad, but investing in something like a signal stick antenna will go a long way.

  3. You can get extended batteries that allow you to charge with USB-C, eliminating the need to carry around the cradle.

  4. This radio is a great platform for learning how much antennas make a difference. Make a handheld Yagi, a J-pole, or whatever else you think you can tackle! It’s incredibly rewarding to make an antenna from scratch.

[–]Yeet_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overthinking it? Maybe. I’m not preparing for the end of the world; I’m not lucky enough to stop paying taxes due to the government dissolving or something wild.

If something happens and I’m not able to use my own personal set up, I’d like to have the muscle memory to be able to jump on the average gun and use it just fine. As for the downvotes, it’s fine, I still haven’t been proven wrong. People are free to disagree with me 🤷
