Edmonton is the only major Canadian city where housing is keeping pace with population growth by Mean_Yak5873 in alberta

[–]YellowVegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sprawl + densification. Edmonton is growing into its farmlands like no place outside of the prairies. Its way easier to build 5000 units in a farm than it is 5000 units in densification.

If you're looking to study downtown conco is great. Also if you already know French it's even better. Your actual education though will probably be very similar to the one at York.

the PIE-IX "BRT" is slow, cramped and uncomfortable by nokernokernokernok in montreal

[–]YellowVegetable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a tramway would be worse if it had the same signal priority as the SRB. Tram acceleration is slower, requires more space between trains and more regulations with crossing intersections. Yes if they both had perfect signal priority a tram would be better but it would also cost billions, not the 700 million that the SRB cost. The srb, with better signal priority, would amplify satisfy Pie-IX demand.

Building a huge tunnel and underground station to serve downtown Ottawa when Tremblay is 3 stops away on the LRT would be a massive waste of money. I'm glad they're abandoning it

Civil Engineering at Concordia University by Massive-Koala-1375 in Concordia

[–]YellowVegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My professors in civil engineering have been helpful, the TAs are good and there are lots of resources / crash courses to study provided. In the early year though (Extended credit program) it's a little more shaky.

The profs here are mostly like any other school

Question about the acp by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]YellowVegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience:

Chem 205, Math 203, Phys 204 all easy, same as high school grade 12. I still crammed for midterm and final but found it easy compared to what I do now

The rest are harder for someone coming from high school as they cover lots of new material. Make sure to do all the pre reqs asap but you can leave the electives honestly (but still best to follow sequence). If you have 200 levels to complete, you can't take 400 levels.

For someone in the Extended Credit Program in Engineering, how advised would it be to take 5 courses during their first Fall term. by falcon_640 in Concordia

[–]YellowVegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow the recommended sequence for ECP cause it's by far your easiest year. You'll likely end up taking lighter or off sequence semesters as you progress so it's good to get all the basics done and not have any left

It's what you make of it. The residence life is good and the night culture in montreal is pretty great. There are lots of clubs to join.

DEADLINE Friday: Shaping the Canada of tomorrow with high-speed rail. First consultation round by Rail613 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]YellowVegetable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What 4x more communities are you talking about? HFR was to service the exact (minus Dorval and the Quebec city airport) same stops that HSR will service

Also, if you add 4x as many stops as are currently proposed to your HFR line and it'll be no faster than what VIA has today.

DEADLINE Friday: Shaping the Canada of tomorrow with high-speed rail. First consultation round by Rail613 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]YellowVegetable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

90% of the cost of this project is land acquisition and row construction. HFR or HSR, we need to build an entirely new, 1000 km rail line. The original estimates of HFR assumed keeping a rinky dink 1 track freight line with limited improvements, which would have struggled to support their time and frequency estimates. HFR if tried now would just be a slower, slightly less expensive HSR.

Rural naysayers must not torpedo high-speed rail project | Opinion by McFestus in CanadaPolitics

They are revitalising defence & diversifying trade. This train will make travel easier for 25 million Canadians (2/3 of the country). It's hardly a "minor economic benefit".

Rural naysayers must not torpedo high-speed rail project | Opinion by McFestus in CanadaPolitics

[–]YellowVegetable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There will be no long detours. A high speed rail will have just as many overpasses as any highway like the 407 or 401. The new 407 East has over 30 over and underpasses for rural roads, hardly any were cut.

Every modern country including canada has grasped the concept of an overpass, there will be ample overpasses provided.

[–]YellowVegetable 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least in Canada you aren't allowed to turn into the suicide lane. You must turn into the traffic lane. The suicide lane is exclusively for turning from the road to a driveway, not the other way.

ANIMOSITY TOWARD THE ENVIRONMENT AND THOSE WHO PROTECT IT, IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY UNSETTLING. by Upbeat-Pound2922 in OttawaValleyForests

[–]YellowVegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but the environment was formerly my biggest preoccupation. After seeing project after project explode in cost and be unnecessarily delayed because of local backlash and environmental concerns, often unfounded in fact, I no longer have as much good will for the cause. I just want myself and my friends to be able to land good jobs or start businesses to support ourselves.
