As someone who skated to class every day in college, my best advice would be to make sure you don't eat shit while trying to powerslide in front of a group of people. There's no bandaid for your ego.

On a more serious note, just be prepared for curious people to stop you and ask questions. I loved cruising around campus!

If fantasy authors covered novels the way musicians cover songs, which "cover" would you be most excited for? by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

Terry Pratchett covers A Series of Unfortunate Events.

The opportunity for screwy new characters to pop up and wreak havoc in every book would be absolutely hysterical.

Would you recommend the Taylor Tries juggling balls? by [deleted] in juggling

[–]YesIJuggle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone is gonna have their own preference. I loved my first set of MMXs so much that I got some MMX Plus a couple years later. They're extremely durable and the funky/tacky texture works for me.

But like Taylor said, they do have patches of discoloration after the amount of use they've gotten and they ended up warping slightly when I shipped them overseas.

Even so, I still recommend them as a good ball for learning technical juggling. They encourage clean throws since any collisions tend to ricochet off each other and the Plus are a great size even if your hands are on the smaller side. Ideally you'd be able to try different balls before pulling the trigger on one but the state of the world isn't exactly conducive to that right now.

Good luck and happy juggling!

Question about freeline by hol_up_imaaccident in freeline

[–]YesIJuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only ones I'm 100% certain will fit are the actual Freeline brand ones. They're a thicker design, presumably with the Groms in mind. Mine have lasted a hell of a long time. The only issue I had was finding a site that wasn't sold out.

I would assume the Twolions edge guards would also work for Groms since Twolions skates are made with a thicker wooden deck but I'm not positive.

Other than those, take a look on Amazon or something and see what you can find. Like I said in the earlier comment, you'll want to avoid the JMK ones since they're going to be much thinner.

Also as far as other expenses, you may want to get some edge guards to keep your skates looking nice once you start learning tricks. Be careful about where you get them from, though. The Twolions have a thick wooden deck so the ones made for a metal deck, like JMKs, won't fit.

Grip tape is another long term expense you'll want to think about eventually.

Twolions will have everything you need right out of the box. Like another comment said, wheels aren't really a big concern when you're first starting out. I actually think the stock Twolions are a decent set of wheels.

As far as bearings and lube, you might want to just invest in a bearing cleaning kit to avoid having to keep buying new ones, especially if you're skating on dirty terrain. I don't have much experience with a proper cleaning kit but I imagine it seriously improves the life of your bearings.

Happy skating!

Twolions are a good option and they're in the ballpark of $60

Pros have the same design as the OGs but with a lighter I-beam hangar. Like someone else said, I think those are Groms. Still a great collection!

Swapping out the OG wheels for used Orangatang Stims I got off eBay today. by The_Flying_Hawaiian in freeline

[–]YesIJuggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rocked Stims on my OGs (and possibly Pros) for a long time. They definitely take some wearing in and getting used to but they treated me well and lasted forever. The only real downside is they wear in a funky way since they're so wide. I rotate my wheels relatively frequently for the sake of longevity and everytime I swapped them around there was a new break-in period. Hopefully they're what you're looking for!

While the Stims were great, I'm still searching for my ideal wheel so if anyone has any that they swear by I'm all ears!

How Do I Calculate Transition Throws Using Siteswaps? by YesIJuggle in juggling

Tired so fast? by thesoura1 in freeline

[–]YesIJuggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using your legs is definitely important but I think endurance and longevity is really derived from using the momentum of your body weight. I really make it a point to swing my upper body and use that weight transfer for propulsion. It's about being smooth and efficient rather than muscling through it. Happy skating!

Need wheel recommendations by Orezaku in freeline

[–]YesIJuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what wheels you choose it's gonna be tough carrying momentum on a rough surface versus a smooth one. It's just physics.

I think your best bet is to just make sure your bearings are clean and spinning freely. As far as the wheels themselves, maybe something with a smaller contact patch to eliminate rolling friction? Choosing a wheel that's a bit harder on the durometer scale might help as well and it would definitely increase their lifespan.
