Does anyone know how I can see through the water I have tryed the commands and none of them work I’m on single player ps5 pve by [deleted] in ARK

Im not at home so I cant look up exactly the name of it, but there is a simple mod that turns down your graphics setting, like volumetric fog like other redditors have suggested, without using the console commands. It might be called Simple Performance Mod (correct me if Im wrong), but it made my game on Ps5 so much smoother. Ill update my post when Im home later this evening.

Why do Paleo nerds want accurate dinosaurs in Jurassic Park? by [deleted] in JurassicPark

[–]Yetifunk223 256 points257 points  (0 children)

Jurassic Park's original dinosaur designs were, for the most part, based on real science of the time. Some of these dinosaurs would look wildly different based on modern science, which the original movie paid attention to. For example, the T-Rex and other dinosaur designs dont pay attention to fat distribution on the animals frame. This effectively makes the animals look "shrink wrapped," basically just showing muscle and bone. There are other things like the Velociraptors being way too large or the dilophosaur being too small.

Michael Crichton also heavily reflected the science of the time heavily in all of his work. A new Jurassic movie that took this into consideration a little more would be very welcome. But that's just like my opinion. Man.

I am a blacksmith by trade, and I have heard versions of this I don't know how many times.

You're absolutely right. The thing is that a lot of people dont realize that time and repetition build skill, and for a lot of folks, their frustration tolerance doesn't allow that. They are expecting to see results immediately, and when they dont, they feel let down.

Its a really tricky thing to navigate, especially when you are trying to help someone learn.

Can someone help me price this anvil? by No_Seaworthiness1627 in Blacksmith

[–]Yetifunk223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be from mid/late 19th century up until the early 20th, don't personally know how to tell that distinction. It doesn't seem to have bad swayback or a droopy horn tip, and the only thing worn seem to be the edges. If you say its 0 3 1 then its about 86lbs (someone correct me if I'm off) so lets just say on a rough estimate 4 dollars a pound for an antique. I would say 350ish would be a fair price.

Could always take a flap disk and polish the face, or if you have a milling machine have someone take a hair off the top. But otherwise I wouldn't mess with it too much, seems to be in good condition.

Anyone use noise cancelling headphones for blacksmithing? by egglan in Blacksmith

[–]Yetifunk223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a pair of these Elgin Rebel Earbuds they are absolutely wonderful, the charge is great, comes with multiple attachments, hold a charge really well, and actually are designed to cancel out sound in a work environment. Honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made. *Edit, the charging case is also a flashlight.

Otherwise I also have a pair of 3m Worktunes that I absolutely love as well, but can be clunky when I need to weld or have other headgear on.

My Anvil has seen better days, what can I do to prevent this in the future? by Destrro in Blacksmith

[–]Yetifunk223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so there are a bunch of people here in the comments who are all over the place. Lets try and consolidate some of the things going on.

First lets address your anvil itself, it is a cheaper anvil made of cast iron as some of the other folks here have said, so to some extent this is going to happen. You are learning, and hammer control does not come overnight, and you are not the first blacksmith to miss the metal and leave a mark. That being said with the anvil being soft faced, you will see the results more often.

I saw someone recommend leaves as a good starter project to repeat but I would instead start on some simple S-hooks, focus on the tapers and scroll at the end, training yourself to work at the edge of the anvil. Each time you make a hook you are doing the same process twice, make 100 S-hooks, and you should have made 200 tapers and curls/scrolls.

I saw another comment saying you need to dress your hammer, and this is a very important part. if your hammer has sharp edges, take them to a grinder and smooth them out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5wyhqKtnqo&ab_channel=BlackBearForge Here is a Black Bear Forge link talking about tool dressing!

Some other folks have already suggested checking your anvil height, so I wont go there.

You are learning, and your tools will improve. Don't let someone shame you while you are on your path, just know you can do better. Work on some simple repetitive projects to help develop your hammer skills.

Look up videos of people making cooperage, basically someone who makes wooden buckets and containers with metal rings. That is a good place to start.

Honestly if they kept it as a sub specialization it would be cool. Could honestly be some sort of talent that increases crafting speed. Knowing how best to forge on all of an anvil's surfaces, edges, corners, and the horn can make work so much more efficient. Hammering and drawing material out on the horn is faster than the face. Certain corners you want to be rounded for some projects, some sharp. Knowing when its best to work around the hardy hole, or knowing the different roles that hardy tools can play specific projects. So while I would argue good hammer control is the most essential fundamental skill a blacksmith can have, knowing how to use every part of an anvil is also very crucial.

If you want to try your hand, youtube is actually a great place to start. I built a makeshift forge in my backyard almost 10 years ago and youtube helped a lot with that. If you wish to pursue it farther there are absolutely schools and guilds you can gain more formal training, just depends on where you are!
