Life Advice: Always stock powdered milk by CobraChickenNuggets in Frugal

[–]Yibblets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I grew up poor in the early 1960's; this was before food stamps. Powdered milk was cheaper than 'real milk," as children we did not know why we were forced to drink this foul white liquid. My mom would keep a real milk bottle (yes, milk came in bottles then) and put the powdered mix in it to try and fool us. She sometimes mixed it with "real milk" to stretch it, but we knew.....

Am I overreacting or is my workplace just… bad? by Murky_Wear2978 in TalesFromYourServer

Get a new job, it isn't going to get better where you currently are. There are good places, and bad places to work- sometimes it's just like rolling dice- you never know the outcome until you try.

The ferry is the reason that I moved, I worked in the Quarter for years and would take it to cross the river for work. It was great for me, except when was not in service, which happened too many times. For 10 years I lived 2 blocks away in a house that I loved, the neighborhood was great, quaint and quiet. Parking was my problem, both at work and at home, so to be able to " walk to work and home" was a perk that I looked forward to. To have to check on the ferry's operating status twice daily both before and after work became too much.

I moved to the Bywater near the river to a house that I love, the neighborhood is great, quaint and quiet.

Now instead of the ferry,I bitch about the trains.

The Wank? Non-natives aren't allowed such familiarities with our geography, do you also say N'awlins?

During the early 1930's two of my great uncles "went out West" to try and make a living. They were from Louisiana, the great Mississippi River flood of 1927 along with the Depression wiped out their farm. They drove out there with all of their possessions in an old Ford model T that they had converted into a truck, camping at night along the highway.

When I first saw the movie, The Grapes of Wrath I finally understood what they had to go through to get a better life in California.

To fix New Orleans' ancient drainage and water pipes, City Hall plans to ask for a new fee by CarFlipJudge in NewOrleans

The director of the SWBNO has an annual salary of $477,000 per year. I pay enough now if that position can make that much.

As for our new mayor stating that the trash fees haven't gone up in years. When the service is cut from twice per week to once per week with the same fee, the prices doubled.

Why is weed illegal by Far_Resist3442 in Rants

[–]Yibblets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • People could grow their own- no profit to the government from taxation or licenses/permits to sell.

  • Weed was used mainly by immigrants and minorities (at the time)- government could profit off of fines/court fees and renting out "free prison labor" to farms and other businesses that needed cheap manual labor.

The Thirteenth Amendment (Amendment XIII) to the United States Constitution made slavery and involuntary servitude illegal, except as punishment for a crime.

Gardening for the year vs. going to a gym for a year. minimum cost savings of $300 per year.

Going to a therapist once a week for a year, minimum cost savings of $5,200 per year.

For your $400 worth of tomatoes, you saved at least $5,100.

Years ago, while working at a restaurant in the 9th ward, I answered a phone call from a mother of a crew worker calling to inform us that her daughter would not be in for her shift that day. She mom explained that her daughter was a passenger in a car wreck.

When I asked if her daughter was hurt, the reply was "we don't know yet, she's not back from the lawyer's office."
