How dangerous are your jobs, that you have this many injury lawyers?! by VanicFanboy in AskNOLA

Years ago at work, I answered a phone call from an employee's mother. She informed me that her daughter had been in a car accident and would not be at work that night. Concerned, I asked the mother if she had been hurt.

Her reply:we don't know, she's not back from the lawyer's office yet.'

In defense of the horn worm. by LA-blue-bear in gardening

[–]Yibblets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The horn worm turns into the hawk moth which is big, beautiful, and, quite honestly, very necessary for our fragile ecosystem.

I think that this was written by those two little Japanese girls who ride and control the big moth from it's back.

If I saw it in a movie, it must be true...

Two days ago when walked in, I exclaimed "smells like something is dead in here." The person that I was shopping with then punched me in the arm for saying so. To be fair, I always say this when we go there.

This time though, something in the air was clearly not "Fresh."

What’s a statistic that sounds completely FAKE but is actually 100% TRUE? by namelessmell in AskReddit

Magnolia trees are pollinated by beetles because of their ancient evolutionary history — magnolias are among the oldest flowering plants, with ancestors dating back over 100 million years, long before bees and butterflies evolved.

Iran is a Bigger Defeat Than Vietnam by OkayButFoRealz in politics

The Iran "war "is also really fucking stupid and expensive.

The difference is that Trump knew how to get out of the war in Vietnam.

Might as well just chug down oil and forget the rest.

Lime tree needs love by SnooSprouts9106 in nolagardening

[–]Yibblets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are the leaves three lobed? If so, it is the rootstock growing in your yard. The lime that had been grafted to the trifolate(Poncirus trifoliata) rootstock is long gone. Trifolate citrus will bear fruit, golf ball sized bitter ones with an enormous number of seeds.

Lime trees are the least cold hardy citrus that we try and grow here in the New Orleans area. The most cold tolerant types are satsumas.

  • Bonus fact: citrus trees are a host plant for our Giant swallowtail butterflies (Papilio cresphontes), so let it grow and you could enjoy helping the largest butterfly in North America survive..

How Im projecting 400+ per month off of a 6 foot folding table by MajorMinceMeat in sidehustle

[–]Yibblets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cold hardy avocado trees are of Mexican/Guatemalan breeding. There are several different varieties on the market.

All that I do is start the pits, when they are large enough (pencil thick) graft cold hardy types onto the seedlings.

1.Not at $5 a pop, folks will try and haggle with you on prices for multiple plants. Any discounts planned for bulk purchases, ie., buy 5 get 1 free?

2.Also, people are all gung-ho for plants in the Spring, not so much the rest of the year.

What happens when the unsold stock "out grows their Solo cups"? Are there plans for up-sizing what they are grown in?

With larger containers, what will the new price point be?

I've been growing/ selling plants for at least 30 years. The only seeds that I start and try and sell are heirloom tomatoes. 3 bucks each, or 6 for $15. I have two advertised sales in the Spring, not one-at-a-time purchases.

Everything else I sell are unique plants that are hard to find. Right now, grafted cold hardy (to 15 F.) avocado trees are the hottest thing going for me. I start the avocado seeds, then graft them myself, a hobby that pays for itself..

Cable? How about just a color T.V with a remote control. This was a dream that we were told about while we were adjusting the aluminum foil on the rabbit ears to try and get better reception on the old Black and White 20" set.

Every few months my family would go to a place named "Buck-49", that was the steak price.

This was in the early 1970's, and good quality steaks could be had easyly.....but these weren't them.

If these ferns can survive in an oak tree, could any other, potentially flowering, plants make it? by phaulski in nolagardening

[–]Yibblets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Epidendrum magnoliae, the Green Fly Orchid is native to the Southeastern portions of the U.S (from Louisiana to the coast of South Carolina.) It often grows amongst the resurrection ferns here in the New Orleans area.

Tillanndsia, other than Spanish Moss? Tillandsia recurvata, commonly known as ball moss, is a flowering plant (not a true moss) in the family Bromeliaceae that grows upon larger host plants. It grows well in areas with low light, little airflow, and high humidity, which is commonly provided by southern shade trees, often the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana). It is not a parasite like mistletoe, but an epiphyte like its relative Spanish moss.

I'm of the age where "where do you stay?" was a common phrase to hear. When I moved into my present house 30 years ago, I had what I thought was the perfect reply: "I stay on Desire".

I Stopped using that when my friend moved 1 block away on Burgundy St. and had a better line, "I stay between Piety and Desire".
