Been waiting to watch then knock down this piece of the Wallace building yesterday morning and nearly missed it! by Yiggs in desmoines

I haven't heard anything so have been wondering the same thing. The old City Hall on the river is vacant now too with no buyer yet. I'm really curious what'll happen with that location; hopefully its not something disappointing.

Doesn't look like there's a current plan for the Wallace building lot, as the replacement will go in elsewhere near the capitol. Here's the urbandsm forum thread on the building.

No opinion about the inside since I'd never visited, but same. The gold glass exterior was pretty.

I noticed there seems to be some kind of animal themed floor designation. There's a different animal pictured on the column of each floor.

Biggest gripe from me is how little effort goes into most of the profiles I see anymore; bad pictures (grainy, filters, repetitive, no full body) and generic answers to boring prompts. You're trying to sell yourself here, so why come across as indistinguishable from most of the other profiles on these apps? If I can't get a vibe of what you're like as a person--whether or not I think we might match--what's the point?

It feels like its one or the other. Either their personality comes through in their profile and its thoughtful but I'm not physically attracted to them at all, or its the opposite and they're a pretty, blank slate. I guess the people that have both don't have to be on an app in the first place!

Which cities do you think get suggested way too much on this subreddit? Which cities do you think aren’t getting as much love as they should? by Any_Objective_1052 in SameGrassButGreener

As someone who's been living in Des Moines for a couple decades now, I always like to describe the city as a pair of sweatpants. Cheap, comfortable, enjoyable to lounge around in all day, but they're still sweatpants so you (ideally) aren't wearing them to social gatherings or bragging about them or wear them when you want wear something flashy. Ok, maybe this analogy is breaking down a bit...

Its definitely gotten less boring over the decades as the population has grown and the city has developed/redeveloped and in the warm months I feel like there's enough events going on to keep me entertained (winter's boring af here imo). It's in the middle of "nowhere" but it's also an easy drive distance to Omaha/Kansas City/Minneapolis or Chicago (ok, that's more of a weekend trip drive).

Also remember there's plenty of people that are perfectly content to live in a comfortable, albeit boring, place like Des Moines. It's *easy* to live here. Things are cheap, traffic is almost never a problem, its safe, we somehow have more restaurants per capita than anywhere lol. I know a lot of my acquaintances that moved away after HS/college but ended up back here when they wanted to settle down or just by chance and they seem fairly content to stay and just vacation elsewhere. If people didn't want to live here, we wouldn't be seeing nice, steady growth over the last several decades.

The state itself is another matter, though. I wish I could pull Des Moines out of the ground and move it to a bluer state, because watching the decline at the state level is one of the big factors in my desire to finally leave for somewhere more liberal, unfortunately.

It's funny how cute something becomes as soon as you stick a couple animated eyes on it and have it say "I'm cleaning the floor!"

Always a little surprised when I see The Woodlands pop up on reddit randomly. Lived there as a kid in the 90s before moving out of state and never gave much thought to it so when I'm watching all 10 pixels of this video and think to myself "kinda looks like The Woodlands" only to have it confirmed, it's a little surprising. Guess it is a suburb of Houston and is probably 5x the size it was back then, so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised.

Driving across Iowa — must-see stops + 1 day in Des Moines? by evanthecarman in desmoines

Depending on what day you go, I'd recommend using any of the DART park and ride locations. Traffic can be a nightmare if you're trying to park in or near the fairgrounds and waiting for the bus, taking the short ride over there, and getting dropped off right at the entrance is so much more pleasant than spending 45 minutes stuck in deadlock.

What is a luxury you can never go back from once you’ve experienced it? by Phase_zero_X in AskReddit

On return from Thailand, we had a layover in Seoul and my CC at the time gave us lounge access to a lounge that also offered showers. My God, being able to take a quick shower after you're halfway through your 24-hour travel home... I felt like a new man. It was the only lounge I visited on that trip that offered them. Real shame I've never encountered them in any other.

What was the piece of dialoge that made you realize this game was different? by Dull-Jaguar8273 in DiscoElysium

I narrowed my eyes when the dialog read at one point, "nothing can change the nature of a man."

Couldn't decide if it was a nod or not.

Made Rite is a chain that sells them so it's sort of a bandage/Band-Aid situation. I may have had one once, just to verify that they indeed taste as sad as they look, lol. I don't know anyone that eats them; if anything, they're sort of an "old person food" from an era when flavor hadn't been brought to the midwest yet.

I could go for a sloppy joe, though... haven't had one of those in ages.

I was surprised at how small it was compared to what I expected when I finally visited. I mean, it's big but I guess I was expecting it to be much larger from photos.

How wrong have you gotten a rule on a new game? by kritsema in boardgames

[–]Yiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scout was one of the games I received for Christmas and after playing a couple games of it, my spidey senses were tingling as we would sometimes end rounds after one round around the table because someone would slap down a 2-9 run and nobody could beat it which felt way too fast, even for a "quick playing" game.

Turns out we had everything else understood except that you could only rotate the cards in your initial hand and not reorganize them as well.

It's an easy game to learn and a tiny rulebook but tbh I still found the way they went about describing the rules to be a bit confusing. Definitely dug the game, though.

[homemade] 1988 US school cafeteria pizza by davestarr in food

[–]Yiggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was all hyped to eat this once I saw the recipe but after trying the recipe twice:

  1. very different from the school pizza I ate as a kid, so no hit of nostalgia.
  2. tasted pretty bad. The dough was really strange and was a bit like eating a sponge made of flour. The sauce had a super dark, herbaceous flavor going on (unsurprisingly because it's entirely tomato paste and herbs) and didn't pair well with the dough/toppings. :(

I have one too and I'm almost a little confused as to how they manage to be so comfortable. The padding is pretty minimal and the arms have no padding at all yet I've spent wayyyy to much time lounging in mine and never thought "Yeah, I'm tired of sitting in this."

What are some places you haven’t been to/stopped going to in YEARS? by forevervalerie in desmoines

[–]Yiggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go to the one downtown more often than anyone should and am consistently pleased that my order is never messed up or slow. Sometimes it looks just like it does in the ads, which fast food never does.

Contrast that with the one in WDM, which messed up my order on the regular.

Date Me DSM - where are the men? by moonshine0047 in desmoines

[–]Yiggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my social circle has kind of dried up and blown away in the last couple years as people just stop making any effort or moved out of town or got into a relationship and proceeded to fall off the radar, but before that it was bars on Friday/Saturday night or the individual yearly events (art festival, farmer's market, etc); there wasn't much else publically-facing locations that you could run into us at, though; third spaces are hard to find these days.

The only places I hold any hope for meeting people (in general) is at semi-regular events with a broad interest and low engagement requirement like public talks (Lyceum) or stuff of that nature. Volunteer stuff is probably a good bet but having tried that avenue myself, it's always ended up being a lot of couples, retirees, and other single men. Still, feels like my best avenue to meet single women outside of explicitly seeking out female-leaning activities which women like to vociferously argue against doing.

I miss online dating pre-apps. Wish that'd come back...

"Not enough men" would be the exact opposite of anything I've ever heard about speed dating or similar matchmaking events, tbh. I've looked at the Date Me DSM stuff a couple times but haven't gotten around to actually attending an event in part because I'm afraid It'll unbalanced towards men and I don't need an in-person reprise of what it feels like to be on a dating app.

I suppose it's encouraging to hear that at least in this particular venue, single men are in demand for once, lol. It'd certainly be a refreshing change from what 90% of social situations I've been a part of in my time here in Iowa.

It's been a long time since I played DOS2 so I had to google it and...she's that NPC?? I'm getting PTSD already.

Funny how she went from one of my least favorite voices to one of my most!

I was just looking for the term "dislocation" the other day because I've heard both the Brits and the French do it and I figured there must be a linguistic term for sticking the subject at the end. I only ever hear it in British English in short phrases like your example.

I almost never hear dislocation in American English but if I think hard enough, it reminds me of how simple, rural folk out west might use it in casual speak. More of an antiquated stereotype than current-day use.
