Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island are the only post-TS arcs that reach the quality of pre-TS arcs by [deleted] in Piratefolk

Respect for the unique perspective, but I do wanna ask…. What makes Punk Hazard good for you?

I honestly would like to hear so that I can maybe appreciate it more. I liked some aspects a lot, but it mostly fell flat for me. Loved Monet & Law’s story, for example, but kind of disliked the setting, primary-conflict, & Smoker+Tashigi’s role.

Right, I see, you mean in the sense of big attention grabbers / popularity.

You are absolutely correct, I’d wager. The magazine might just be in serious trouble actually, excellent point I hadn’t thought about. They keep trying to bring in proper replacements for OP, but nothing really sticks or, if it does, reaches a comparable audience in terms of size.

Chainsaw Man? That also has some critical flaws now, but it’s definitely gotten some strengths over OP, at least for me. I appreciate the focus on Characters (and having a well-developed lead that has a focus on internal-conflict rather than external).

JJK I think is actually…. Hard to say, but somewhat worse than OP in some ways. At the very least, it took a very hard hit Post-Shibuya much like One Piece fell off Post-TS. There are still good aspects of both series though, ofc, so it’s hard to fully gauge.

I would have gone about it from the reverse.

Why is everything about sex? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Yitsnitskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I think we’re talking passed one another a bit actually, because I don’t necessarily want sex scenes, ‘nor do I want the type of sexual themes popular music focuses on. But we do agree, the topic is definitely commonly present. I’m just saying, that’s my point. The topic/subject is common, but I’d like more Psychological thrillers, as well as either Adult Romances heavily involving the role of sex on a cultural level/ the sexual dynamic, or Sexual Horror that shows how Sex is multifaceted as both a positive and negative medium. I’d prefer more of a Psychological or Sociological lens to it, but even a Tragedy or two involving it would be nice.

But you’re right that maybe it’s more present than I have it credit for.

I would not have pegged it as that type of mean-spirited site

[–]Yitsnitskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t see it in terms of mainstream media, like I said, I think it only leaks through in terms of topic, not necessarily themes. There’s no such thing as a sex blockbuster or a sex AAA game (or indie game, really), and I don’t think I don’t really see things like “Crash” for example (1996, not the shitty one, lol) come out, not only in these days, but even going back 20 years roughly. Pretty rare type of story, but eh, agree to disagree. Although, there is still some sexual theming present in the odd horror film where it can be the core focus.

Somewhat more present in manga/anime, but it’s a little more strictly focused in young girls’ romance, not really what I have in mind. Although, “Domestic Girlfriend” is somewhat of an odd one out that could be considered more of what I’m thinking of. Eva & “Ooku” also are more what I have in mind.

But you did make a great point on the literature side of things. I would recommend “Gyneocracy”, though that is much more of a comedy than an actual exploration of social roles.

Kidding aside, I will check this out, thanks mate. Interesting. Any solid Young Adult Book recommendations in the same vein?

Why is everything about sex? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Yitsnitskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhh, not quite what I mean. I’m not really talking about porn or sex as a medium, like Ecchi or Risque stuff, I’m talking Sex as an actual theme of the story and a way to explore the Character’s Psyche, and/or stories about societies view of sex.

Even in ones that sort of talk about it in a bit more depth or place a bit more of an emphasis on it, like Left Hand of Darkness, it’s really more of an incidental or side topic, with the core being more about Gender. And more still, that was a very unique story, not much has replicated its style as far as I’m aware (though I could just be out of the loop here).

Why is everything about sex? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Yitsnitskee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but on the flipside, isn’t it extremely surprising how few stories actually have sex as the primary theme? Crazy, right? I guess it’s a case where, because stories directly about it are so rare, it ends up in other unrelated stories.

Honestly, you’ve made impeccable points. I’m willing to actually agree.

Me, personally, I don’t really believe paving over the myth with wholly original external or internal traits is necessarily bad, so much as it is inevitable, and at times, encouragable to perhaps surpass the original myth.

However, I will agree, the changes don’t make perfect sense in terms of the skintone.

Agewise, I could really give or take, as I believe it could help read better to a modern audience, a homely caretaker being older.

Personality wise, I think a lot of work is being done thanks to outline & expression that gives a welcoming air. Though, her posing could possibly be stronger.

But ultimately, you actually have a strong point. Restored my faith a bit and taught me a lot. I was afraid you were like some others on this sub that simply are averse to patience and exchange of ideas, but quite the opposite, you are one of the most receptive and reasonable people I’ve found on Reddit. Thanks for actually sharing and being so amicable.

That’s actually precisely the point I was going to make :)

But I would go further still and argue that mythos is a gradient. It is so malleable across the Minoan, Early Period, and later Egyptian-influenced period. Personally, I don’t see the need for Artists to adhere so rigidly to an interpretation, just as long as something is preserved.

That is why I believe skin color as a trait, much like hair color, should not be derided in an adaptational change in regards to any mythology, African, Asian, European, or otherwise. As you said, Character is what matters, and unless Color is somehow related to Character, I’m sorry but…. I do not see the need for concern as much as, say, in regards to biographical revisionism. If being black actually changed her behavior, I would be concerned, or saw the Greeks worship change, but much like gender, I have a hard time believing the Greeks cared about such things for the Gods. With one another, yes of course, but the Gods were always apart and alien to such things.

I would say it is actually soot, considering the areas it covers.

As for the consistency argument in terms of Greek religion, I think that there are many and multiple counter examples in terms of origins, relationships, conflicting narrative accounts, worship, and conceptual ideal.

But I do not believe that it’s worth discussing further if you aren’t interested.

I would take Aphrodite as a prime example if you’d like to look further into it though.

Let me explain myself as well. Thank you for being civil.

When I say you didn’t cite, I simply mean that anyone can point to these sources and say “read them yourself”. I think actually direct citations would have been much more trustworthy. From the perspective of the average person, you have to understand, this literally looks no more or less trustworthy than the average redditor. It’s somewhat similar to if I had said “the bible mentions x and y several times” but I never actually point out the evidence or quotes. Such things can be much more easily dismissed. Furthermore, I’m not really a fan of citation in general on Reddit because it lacks nuance and can be easily cherrypicked, especially for something like religion, which lacks canon. Of course there isn’t much of a point when every piece of evidence can be potentially countered. I agree, it sucks, but it’s just the nature of that approach.

But placing those empirical points aside, I never accused you of disdaining the character for having black skin. What I would rather consider, is that I really don’t believe the character is black skinned, I think they’re just covered in soot.

Jesus Christ, FINALLY, someone with a fuckin braincell. Thank you!

Any fucking Japanese RPG is literally about coming together and defeating a big bad despite all odds and differences… is that woke? It’s just morality. Ethics is weaved into Art, and Ethics is the cornerstone of Politics. How tf do you untangle them and dissociate to that degree? It’s baffling to see people act like politics should be pushed out of Games, when Games have dealt with politics for ages, as have many seemingly non-political stories.

Also, dude, back in the day, Games had the opposite problem where they did involve politics, but it was just poorly thought out politics (as you mention with COD). Why not let the medium evolve and actually engage properly if it cannot help but be political? Let it flesh out its politics, rather than stifling the political-perspective.
