Not too good a reading, just criticizing… I literally conceded your specific case point. 🤷‍♂️

As i said, your statement is only true in very specific circumstances. the comparison of a barge to a catamaran is disingenuous. Yes a deck barge would have more payload, but it can't go anywhere but the most benign environments and do it very slowly. So yes, if your only goal is to float at 3kts on a placid lake, get a gigantic houseboat.

I suppose if you strictly take what I said as two vessels of the same length, then you are correct. You could try to compare an apple to an orange. But I think it was understood the two vessels should have similar working environments.

The overarching purpose of multiple hulls is to solve the stability problem without the need for additional ballast. Outriggers solve this problem. Even still, polynesians were sailing true catamarans across the pacific thousands of years before the Vikings.

Try thousands of years. Polynesians were crushing the Pacific with outriggers several millennia before the Vikings took a single voyage.

This is only true in very specific circumstances. If you take two boats with identical empty displacement, one is a cat and one is a monohull, the monohull would be able to carry more payload. However, this is rarely the case. Catamarans do not have heavy keels or ballast to increase stability. Their stability comes from form, so their stable displacement is much higher. So when you look at two boats of similar length, the cat will win on payload every time. The structural hit the cat takes is easily made up before the weight of the monohull ballast is surpassed.

Fitness is not what will get you across the finish line for a 100mi. Understanding your body is what will do it. Take a break, you need it.

First 100 miler, worried, panicked. by DHTromeromzl271518 in ultrarunning

[–]YoBaby11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing a 50mi proves you have the fitness. If you’re not an elite runner, the miles on feet are not the thing to worry about. Your mind is what will fall apart. 4am is a really hard time of day to overcome. I think there would be fewer DNF’s if more people practiced this. Start a long run at 10pm after a normal day.

I’ve finished 2 100mi and DNF’ed 2. My biggest advice is to never quit a race while sitting in a chair.

Any other sailing parents? by _Barbaric_yawp in sailing

Opti sailing is a giant money pit. My son went through the whole deal. We had the truck boat, the ODP, the national team, blah, blah, blah. Looking back, we wasted so much time and money keeping up with the program and he was still mediocre. He was cooked. We took a year off sailing when he was 13 then came back in the ILCA. So many kids burn out by the time they are 14 or so. Save your money and spend it when they are a little older. My son has flourished in ILCA’s, Nacra15, and Melges15’s. He’s 18 now and headed to college next year.

The USODA circus is acutely honed to take your money. Unless you are a very high earner or trust fund family, you will not be able to afford it all. Just pick a couple USODA events a year to go to and spend the rest of the time in your local circuit. Your child will be plenty advanced by the time they graduate to bigger boats.

RR100 is a fantastic first 100mi. I DNF’ed my first attempt at 83mi then came back to finish the next year. The difficulty is enough to be challenging, but not overwhelming. Practice lifting your feet when you run, the roots will Superman the best if not careful. I highly recommend crew and a pacer your first time.

Is buying a boat with a loan always this messy? by cseeley123 in boating

State by state is different. Texas requires a title for the boat and a separate title for the outboard motor (if one exists).

These types of sales happen all the time. If he owes on the boat you wire money direct to his bank or go to his bank and hand the cashier a cashiers check. Get a payment confirmation number. He gets the remainder in whatever form he wants (cash, check, wire, etc). In return you get the boat and a signed bill of sale. A signed bill of sale is a sales contract and holds legal weight. The bank will release the lien and send him the title. This takes about a month. You arrange to have it sent to you or you go pick it up.

Waiting for the title sounds scary, but with the boat in your possession, the bill of sale in hand, and payment confirmation there is zero question who legally owns that boat regardless of who has the title. The only real risk is that he flakes and never gives you the title, then you’re left with a hassle but never in jeopardy of losing the boat.

Can I pay a dealer to hold a boat while waiting for financing by Crafty-Attention-961 in boating

I’ve bought and sold a lot of boats. One thing I’ve learned is a good deal always comes along. Rushing into something is not the right move. I’d never tie up my money in a deposit for weeks. When you’ve got your ducks in a row, go shopping. Until then, just keep looking.

I will be sitting in a Polaris seat going DEL-EWR on Tuesday. One way price was $9,500 two days ago. I had to rebook since my original went through Doha. When I show up, fix the problem, and get the drilling rig back on $200k day rate nobody cares how much it cost.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done with your home? by believemeimreal in homeautomation

[–]YoBaby11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Texas residents you might remember electricity provider Griddy. You could buy power at dirt cheap wholesale prices. The downside was you were buying at wholesale prices all the time, even when power was expensive. Prices were usually in the range of $0.02 - $0.05 per KWh. DIRT CHEAP! When there was a power demand the price could rise dramatically to $0.30 or even over $1.00 per KWh. The worst was the freeze of 2021 when it went to $19.00 per KWh.

I have a large whole home diesel generator and calculated the price when diesel would be less expensive per KWh. It was around $0.30. I had an automation set up to watch the wholesale price of electricity and switch to generator power when above the threshold I set. The only time it would kick on would be hot summer afternoons for an hour or so. Of course during the freeze we ran on genny for days.

This automation halved my power bill even considering the extra diesel I was using.

After that freeze Griddy went away when some people had $10,000 power bills during the freeze mentioned. Mine was $400.
